One of the other notable things Warner Bros head Alan Horn said at the ShoWest presentation today involved how the studio hopes to fill the void that will be left by the studio’s most successful franchise. After Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II hits theaters in July 2011, that will conclude the biggest box office franchise in cinema history. How does Warner Bros hope to fill the hole left by this profitable series?

Here is the quote from Horn:

“As we ease out of Harry Potter, we hope to bring you the excitement of the DC [Comics] Library!”

It isn’t clear if that statement is just wishful thinking or if actual plans are under way to greenlight new DC Comic book adaptations. We know that The Green Lantern is currently shooting and is set for a June 2011 release, and development of a movie adaptation of The Flash has been ongoing. We also know that Warner Bros wants a sequel to The Dark Knight, and is trying to get a Superman movie into production before they loose the rights to the character.

Discuss: But will Superman and Batman be able to fill the void left by “the kid who survived”?

I'm still waiting to hear about a Artemis Fowl movie/film series.

If they do remake and continue with the Big Superheroes, like Superman, Batman and Wonderwoman, they're going to have to compensate for the lack of suspense in knowing the dimensionalities of the characters by imposing extremely crafty scripts and plots. Like, for Superman, make it a little more darker and edgy (like the Superman Doomsday movie) also with Lex being more tyrannical. Batman would have to definitely continue on its dark path to maintain its following. Even though HP was a smashing franchise, Batman is still the number 3 best-selling movie ever, so it goes to show that with proper scripting and playing off the basic movie elements of suspense and action, both DC and Marvel could make hit movies of ALL their heroes.

i think you ment "The boy who lived."

there a ton of comic book moives that have nothing to do with superheroes. from hell, a history of violence, road to perdition, the Rocketeer, surrogotes and etc.

8 harry potter movies make about 800 million each. you think people would have stop caring 7 movies ago.

As the generation of kids that flocked to Harry Potter movies has grown as the movies have come out, they will all be in their late teens early 20's when the final installment hits, that being said WB would be smart to adapt some of their Vertigo titles into films. Sandman, The Books of Magic (excellent place to start and introduce some of the Vertigo pantheon), redo Hellblazer properly, Transmetropolitan, Fables. There's a huge market for these if done right.

If the new Conan the Barbarian and Red Sonja films make gigillions then perhaps someone will try digging-up DC's underrated but none-the-less blatant Conan pastiche, Claw the Unconquered. That comic would actually translate to a franchise more coherently than Conan without losing faithfulness to the original stories published by DC. As a fan of more or less anything with impossibly ripped guys hacking fools' to pieces I'd also apprecitae the excuse for DC to re-launch a Claw comic.
  • no. they're going to miss harry potter, a lock of eight films with a massive global audience? that is pie not served very often.
as for the DC stuff: there is no getting away from the fact that nobody outside comics has ever heard of, cares anything about, blue beetle, booster gold, ant man and whoever else. they're not global franchise properties of any sort. there really only is; Batman, Superman, Wonderwoman and the justice league (I'm not even sure who's in the justice league but it's got supes and wonderwoman right?) Batman is finishing its cycle and for decency's sake should be allowed rest 4-5 years. before cranking up the same story all over again. Superman should be fine and wonderwoman, I dunno.. crazy tiara bikini girl with an invisible ship and a lasso...

I think that Harry Potter and Super Hero movies have two separate (though overlapping) audiences. I also think it's unlikely that anything quite as popular as Potter will come along again anytime soon.

I want a freakin Wonder Woman movie. Out of the trio, she's the only one yet to have a big blockbuster film.
  • Matthew Thomas
Yup but the studios dont have the balls to greenlight a mega budget movie with a woman in the lead.

There was a Wonder Woman script on the net which keeps the movie in the 40s rather than present day. Its a great one and i really hope they film that.

“the kid who survived” sounds like an immigrant translating their native language into english. its "the boy who lived"

The DC comics will only fill that void if they are any good. The Harry Potter movies are, at their worst, decent films with a HUGE fanbase. Comic book movies don't necessarily have as big of a fanbase, especially when you go into the lesser known/cared-about like The Flash. Batman will make a ton of money even if it's not that good, so will Superman. It's the lesser known heroes and the minor ones that will have to stand out.

What about Teen Titans? Can we drum up some support for a live-action movie......?
  • TLA fan27
LOVE that idea, Teen Titans was one of my favorite shows on Cartoon Network after the 90's shows got canceled. Would attract a teenage audience and adult audience if done right because the dark tone would translate perfectly to a big screen adaptation.

Hoping Green Lantern is awesome, can't wait for the next Batman, I can wait on Superman though if they followed the All Star route it has potential instead of "god like being from outer space whose powers change every few years". But Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Arrow, Plastic Man, even JLA or JSA would be really interesting.
  • Brian
Pushing out crappily written superhero movies won't "fill the void". This whole superhero push is getting old fast. All the heroes that don't deserve movies based on their actual character are getting movies and filling people's heads with "oh they're so awesome!" because flashy effects make a movie go boom boom! I'm not really looking forward to anymore superhero movies because as I said it's getting old and they're not putting effort into making them good, they're just trying to pump them out every year.
  • mangoshakes
I hope they do Barry for the Flash. i mean, if they really wanna do this right and sort of follow why Potter was so good. if they do a JLA movie, it definitely needs to end with Barry dying and saving the day. just like the comics and it'd be awesome. then a flash sequel could follow wally.

As a big comic book fan I think DC has a lot of propeties extremely ripe for adaptation. If they put the right men behind this I really can't see why they couldn't have a hit on their hands with every DC franchise they adapt.

I really hope they get The Flash right though its going to have to be done to perfection. If you think Iron Man has charisma wait till you see The Flash. If they get the next Batman project right and do The Flash right they will be onto something.

There was a rumour Nolan would be heavily involved here and I hope that is the case. Nolan is perfect for a lot of these adaptations due to the nature of DC comics material. While Stan lee was drawing up your friendly neighbourhood superhero and the like DC were going with a darker and more real to life tone. Some of the interpretations of DC superheroes like Batman were pretty dark like Frank Millers "The Return of the Dark Knight".

I would like to see more from Batman, a complete Superman remake(focus on making Lex Luthor a complete bad ass please), A Flash movie and more from that franchise, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and maybe even Starman.

    john krasinski as The Flash!

that..... could really work, i think.

Just bring on the Flash already!
  • Max
really dude? i dont know much about Flash but what I do know is that his only power is to run fast, which sounds kinda lame for a movie. And apparently my friend said he can fly by spinning his arms?
  • YazzyDream
I really love Flash's character, but making a movie out of his power... will need to be really creative.

I think what your friend meant is when Flash spins his arms while pointing them to the ground he creates mini twisters that allow him to hover.
  • Max
It would be awesome to make a movie with his power. You just make him go normal and everything else go slow. Fifty people shooting machine guns at him while he jumps off a bridge, between the blades of a helicopter.
  • Octoberist
It like saying "Captain America is just a dude with a sheild".

The Flash has super speed, so it's not just running. He has a fast punch..image getting punched by him..your head would be flying off of your head.

He can heal fast, control his molecules, move through matter, time travel, dodge villains with mind control because his mind is too speedy, and like what your friend said, create tornados with his fists.

But it's about his powers but about the character. The Flash, no matter what version, is a fun and funny character. Think of the tone of the Incredibles.
  • greggorybasore
"your head would be flying off your head"

I know that was a typo, but that's still a great line and puts a smile on my face.

DC Comics > Harry Potter, so yes I think they'll do just fine.

    respectfully disagree.
  • Matthew Thomas
I think Wild dog, Booster Gold, Gunfire, SuperPro, Matter-Eater Lad would all disagree with you.
  • mangoshakes
actually Booster Gold's changes over the past 5 years and his story/character development are awesome. He's actually completely legit and interesting nowadays.
  • A Booster Gold/Blue Beetle buddy-hero comedy?
  • "The Boy who Lived", Peter.
  • mangoshakes
"the boy who lived" i think.

reading other posts on this, it sounds like they'll be going 2 a year. and they're looking for directors and stuff for Flash. Ilike 2012 will bring batman 3 and the flash. 2013 would bring wonder woman and superman.

also they said everything will be in 3D, which isn't a big deal to me.
  • Reniassance_Man
I wouldn't consider any of the DC films as replacements for Harry Potter or vice versa--they are different films. When HP 7 II wraps up, it'll conclude a pretty terrific streak of films, but its time will be over. 8 Films is more than enough.

I am excited though about the increasing excitement from the WB camp about the upcoming DC projects. There may be a time when DC films prove as strong as Marvel's, but we need more evidence than the Dark Knight to prove that it's possible.
  • Yeah, it is hard to compare HP to comics, but I think he meant more financially than anything else. WB will need another cash cow and they seem to be banking on comics. A new franchise like Percy Jackson would be more what they should try to replace HP with. Something more kid oriented with the same appeal.
  • mangoshakes
I honestly think WB will be putting out better quality in total cause everything is in house. Really there's no excuse for marvel or DC, there isn't a character that can't make a good movie. particularly Superman.
