nolan-superman

Remember when DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson denied that Christopher Nolan was overseeing the new Superman film? It’s stories like this that make the movie rumor business so sketchy, because an official denial doesn’t always mean that something isn’t true. We know now that Nolan is overseeing Superman for WB as David Goyer writes the script based on a story by Nolan and Goyer. We know this because Nolan is talking about it. The director promises good things for the next Superman, and his wife, producer Emma Thomas, denies a few other recent rumors.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Nolan is ‘now doing the hard work’ on a script for Batman 3, based on a story by Christopher Nolan and Goyer.

The LA Times has quotes from Nolan and Thomas about Superman. The big one is from Nolan, speaking about the story that Goyer pitched to him when they were stalled for ideas for Batman 3:

It’s very exciting, we have a fantastic story. And we feel we can do it right. We know the milieu, if you will, we know the genre and how to get it done right…[it] is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way.

A further quote suggests that we shouldn’t expect a team-up of Batman and Superman, at least from Nolan. The LAT describes Nolan’s Batman films as creating a world in which Batman is the only hero, and that is expected for Superman as well. “Each serves to the internal logic of the story,” says Nolan. “They have nothing to do with each other.”

As to the specific approach, Nolan is cagey. He won’t talk villains or any real specifics.”We’re approaching it in a not dissimilar way [to the Batman films] in terms of trying to find an incredible story in a way that audiences can engage with it the way they engage with contemporary action films,” he says. He explains that the high-profile casting of the original Richard Donner Superman is what led him to his casting approach for the Batman films, so it is appropriate that Nolan is coming around to Superman now.

Will it be called Man of Steel, as previously reported? “I don’t know where this stuff comes from,” says Emma Thomas. But by ’stuff’ she could be referencing a number of different rumors mentioned by the LA Times: the Man of Steel title, the inclusion of Lex Luthor and/or Braniac, and more far-fetched rumors of a period piece. That leaves us at square one with respect to having real details.

With respect to Batman 3, Christopher’s brother Jonathan Nolan is currently writing the script, and few other details are being allowed out. Christopher Nolan says the villain won’t be Mr. Freeze, insists that the primary character ensemble from the previous two films will return, and that it will end their story. He explains,

The key thing that makes the third film an great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story. And in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story…I’m very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we’ve done with the characters. My brother has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these thing don’t go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling.

The big question now is: who will direct both Superman and Batman 3? Nolan says he won’t direct Superman, and no other director has yet been named. As for Batman 3, Nolan is keeping quiet while he finishes Inception, but the LAT is certainly under the impression that he will helm the film. As the site says, “Nolan, for the record, also won’t confirm that he is actually directing the third Batman film but, well, of course he is, but Inception isn’t in the can yet and it’s against his code.”

can you imagine how much internal screaming of joy occurred when Nolan walked into WB's offices and said "I wanna talk Superman"
  • moviefan
glad to hear nolan finally talk up superman. Its good to hear whats going on in his mind for superman. I think it would be best having superman be only hero in his film world like batman. This will probably help the character out greatly. I am also glad he said this will be a different superman and not be continuing donner/singer's takes on the character. Its high time for it to be a new take. Cant wait for more details to surface.

The thought of a new superman film makes me drool. I think Superman is the character that when it's done right, when everything comes together. Everybody...EVERYbody can get chills. he's SUPERMAN. the freaking icon.
  • quintushalls
Mr. FREEZE?!!! WHY DIDN'T THEY ASK ABOUT RIDDLER?!
  • whoot! "hard work at on Batman 3" is exactly what I want to hear!
  • Ed
"Nolan is cagey," because he won't reveal plot or villains. WTF? Are you serious? Do you really want to know everything about the movie before you see it? You're just more proof that fanboys are what's killing cinema.
  • jrice73
Team Nolan IS ACTUALLY doing this! A new Superman and a final Batman film to end the series. I'm in heaven.
  • Ho-lee... awesome. The fact that he's really talking about this, for real real, is so exciting.
  • NoName7579
I can't wait for both of these films.

    The N-TEAM has saved us?

To me the Nolans can do no wrong! I hate to dig up old wounds but with the unfortunate passing of Heath Ledger there will always be something missing... THE JOKER

To the Superman thing i dont really care, i liked Returns so id rather like to see a Bryan Singer directed sequel. BUT it is Christopher Nolan so ill still
    see this.
  • LaFluer
i for one am glad this will be nolans last batman movie. ok i love batman begins and the dark knight, but thye are far from perfect, i want someone who completely respects batman, the villians and gotham. nolan is no god
  • jason b
gotta get a dictionary & look up the word 'respect'. because you are inacurately using it, by implying that nolan doesnt respect the many years of source material. soooo far off base.
  • LaFluer
hmm why change the whole two-face orgin? why change the joker? i mean you could argue the face-paint all you want, but i dont overly care about that, he didnt really act like the joker at all, not happy not funny. do you know that he almost took away the cape from batman's costume? also gotham is a joke. i love how i have one thing to say, and also say i very much liked batman begins and the dark knight, but they and nolan arent these creative gods that you speak of. i could go on, the bat sonar was a terrible idea, basically took away any aspect of batman having to be a detective.
  • Leave Chris alone! Oh God, just leave him alone! *sobs*
  • mchops
Please name a movie that is perfect. Thought so...
  • Pulp Fiction.
    imo.
  • papasanchez
That's an unreasonable comment. I'm a batman freak and I feel he was as close to perfect as you can get. No one will ever be able to nail the character 100% as everyone sees him differently.

The great thing about comic books is that they can be as wild as hell cause anything goes in that world but in the transfer to the big screen sacrifices have to be made for the sake of realism.

If you want comic book movies you have to accept that fact.

I agree with you. The Nolan's came as close as possible to giving us exactly what should be in Batman movies and I am surely glad that he graces us with his movies. Of course Chris Nolan is no God, but then again who is?
  • papasanchez
Only god is god! Too deep? Ha. I do love nolans films though. La funk upstairs ain't so keen but everyones entitled to his or her opinion.

Viva la DC revolution. Viva la Nolan.
  • Octoberist
how can a perfect superhero movie exist? it's all subjective.
  • any superhero movie will be far from perfect because they all have to follow a certain formula.

how does nolan not respect Batman? Seems like he has been the only director to take the character seriously.

If it's about being true to the comics then... oh well things can't be 100% accurate.
  • Mikey
The next Batman film will be Nolan's last, he makes that pretty apparent in the interview. This is fantastic, because in television and movies, it pays to know when to end. It erases possibilities of jumping the shark or having a casting/directing fiasco like we saw with Spider-Man.
  • ERoBB
So after Nolan finishes Batman 3, how long is okay for someone to do a new Batman? I'm not a big Zack Snyder fan, but one job he would be perfect for is the The Dark Knight Returns adaptation he's drooling over.
  • jason b
im only supporting that snyder/DKR idea if its done 15 years down the road, with bale & daniel day lewis facing off. we don't need more batman after chris & co are done. we can learn to be patient for once.

im as big a part of our beloved fanboy/geek community, but one thing i cannot stand that has become the majority feeling is the impatience and 'now now now' mentality. it only encourages the studios to make bonehead decisions and we get clusterfucks like the wolverine film.

we wouldn't have to wait another 30 years for someone with nolans integrity & sway, if we'd just learn to be a little patient.
  • Michael Mann should do one. He was ripped off enough in Dark Knight. Just kidding. Sort of.
  • jason b
i bet the only reason you say that is because nolan had said he went there for influeence. unless you can back up yer statement with several specific things that were ripped off - im calling BS. (the interragation scene is a freebe so it don't count - many a film hav had that. ironman2 just stole it)
  • Sounds good kiddo!
  • i might be in the minority here, but i rather liked "Superman Returns." there's were quite a few things wrong with it, but overall i liked what Singer brought to the table.

that said, i can't wait to see what the Nolans have cooked up.
  • ERoBB
    Batman Begins = Superman Returns
The Dark Knight = The Man of Steel

At least in terms of name style, they're chasing Batman glory. I bet if Batman 3 ended up being named Gotham, which was rumored, Superman 3 would be Metropolis.
  • CHeRRY
sorry but Batman Begins does not equal a giant pile of shit.
  • ERoBB
    In title style alone.
  • cavine
ive always wanted 'GOTHAM' as the 3rd title. its perfect.

but Metropolis is taken. dont go there
  • GabeJa
Of course Nolan will direct batman.......

I really kinda hope that jonah takes a stab at directing with superman......
  • mchops
Whoever did the interview forgot to ask about Justice League.
  • cavine
when it comes to dc, nobody cares about green lantern, aquaman, flash ww, etc. . its about bats and supes only. team nolan will have nothing to do with those other doomed projects
  • bobby
Where did you get that crazy statement from? Maybe you don't care but you must be high if you think others don't seeing as at least comic wise people continue to show they care as well as with animation. The Nolans aren't the end all be all for DC or comic movies in general. Begins was a good film but TDK only blew up to where it's at because of Heath Ledger. I bet if Ledger never died TDK would have had no where near the box office amounts it had. I say $650 million tops. Let others take up the helm and make these movies the way they are portrayed in the comics or cartoons. You can't get anywhere near the epic scale as those 2 mediums portray with the properties if people continue to think this Nolan "realistic" view is the only way to be done. That's why I'm happy Green Lantern is shaping up the way it is. That movie truly looks like the 1st real comic book movie from WB in some years.
  • bobby
You must be crazy or extremely high.Heath Ledgers death was all over the entertainment world and his role as Joker being his last was something frequently talked about. Ledgers death was the biggest draw the film had. $900 million WW? Are you nuts? How does the Nolan series go from about $400 million WW with Begins to $900 million?
  • LaFluer
not really, and while brad pitt is a star, hes not a huge box-office draw, id say ledgers death added buzz to the movie to at least 150 mil domestically
  • For fuckssake, how many people out of general popcorn-eating stupid public actually knew about Ledger's death? He wasn't Brad Pitt. I'm sure with him being alive TDK would have still made it past $500 million domestically and $900 million worldwide.
  • mchops
Green Lantern is shaping up pretty nicely so I wouldn't be down on that project. It has the potential to be a real sleeper hit.
  • Shane
The LAT describes Nolan’s Batman films as creating a world in which Batman is the only hero, and that is expected for Superman as well. “Each serves to the internal logic of the story,” says Nolan. “They have nothing to do with each other.”

    There's your answer.
  • mchops
I realize that but if anyone can handle directing a Justice League it would be Nolan. I can't see anyone else being able to do it.
  • Bryan Singer. Just cause he's done two excellent superhero films in which there were a lot of them and everyone was well developed and had just enough screentime. Simply a great balance.
  • papasanchez
JJ Abrahams!! But it would have to be separate from nolanverse otherwise it wouldn't work. Listen to me ramble on as if that would work!!

It might however, work with the Avengers. There's a director for a film that fits like hand into glove!

    Hand into glove!!
  • Mike
I just hope Lex Luthor isn't in the next Superman film. He may be the most identifiable of a very unmemorable rogue's gallery for Supes but that doesn't mean he had to be in 4 out of the 5 Superman movies.

Bring on Braniac or someone like Bizarro that the Big Blue Boyscout can wreck whole cities with while engaged in herculean fisticuffs.

Hell, I'd even be happy with Mxyzptlk at this point.
  • quintushalls
It really has to be Braniac. One of the best things from Superman: TAS (The best Superman cartoon series), was the origin story pre-Earth.
  • mangoshakes
or eventually Darkseid. I wanna see Superman take on armies cause only he can do that.
  • Definitely no Luthor. Bring on Bizarro Superman!
  • papasanchez
Words can't express how glad I am superman is being guided by Nolan. I can see him possibly directing it completely. As for batman 3, let the news keep rolling in. Life is good now, life is good.
