Up In The Air

During the filming of Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air, I saw a set photo where George Clooney was dressed in a full-on NASA space suit, walking in an airport. That scene didn’t make the final film, and I’ve always wondered what it was about, and where it fit. Up in the Air hits DVD and Blu-Ray on March 9th (On Amazon: $27 for Blu-ray, $17 on DVD), and we’ve been given a look at the deleted scene in question, in which Ryan Bingham goes about his disconnected routine in a spacesuit. You can watch it now, embedded after the jump. Of course, I wouldn’t recommend watching the clip unless you’ve already seen the film, as the deleted scene in question was to be set late in the film.

I actually really dig the segment on its own, but I can see how it would have felt too on the nose at that point in the film.

  • Surely this is in reference to the comment that less people have been to the moon than had flown as many miles as he has. Right?

I know people loved the opening titles, but I wouldn't have minded if this was the opening instead.
  • This is a 10x better ending that the interview montage they do at the end. That scene will make this film outdated in a decade, which this deleted scene has the sort of everlasting power that, similarly, Clooney's scene in Michael Clayton has.
  • I heard Reitman talking about this in an interview-- this wasn't just late in the picture, it was THE ending. Would've been confusingly out of place in the film, I think. But still really cool. A great ad for Up in the Air, at least.

If anyone's wondering, the music playing is Lonesome Town by Ricky Nelson. I found it on my Pulp Fiction soundtrack.
  • amrhassan
I would've loved seeing that scene in the movie.

I love this scene. I'm not crazy about the movie and I geniuenly think I'd cut it major slack and love it if this were there. I'm not sure if the placement indicated by this clip is the best place for it, but I'm sure Reitman could have found a place for it. It would have been an iconic image from the film.
  • Digdug
Could make a great Holiday Inn ad. But yeah, wouldve felt out of place among the completely grounded reality of the rest of the film.
  • Not bad, but the scene is not exactly necessary. We get that he's lonely without the dream sequence.
  • Fir3Wolf
Why not say that it takes place at the end of the movie. Saying it takes place late in the film makes it sound like it happens a bit between the middle and end. I really liked this on its own but don't know how well it would have fit seeing it with the rest of the movie.
  • You wanna know the reason why Reitman and other filmmakers like him will never be legends?

Because they are too big of pussies to make that scene not a dream.
  • ITrollOnTheInternet.
100% Agree here. This scene had a really nice Gondry feel to it, and I feel like the right director could have made it work. It's funny because that scene had way more emotion and pull to it than anything else in the movie. Reitman's direction was phoned in and blase, and this scene would have really given some sense of depth to the direction of the film. Then again, using the Hollywood archetype of making the whole thing a dream nullifies everything.

Just give the audience a surreal moment and let them chew on it. That's where you want the audience to expand on something, not at the end of the film where the viewer wants closure, and a closing to a character arch. I'm sorry, but the fact that Reitman was up for best director for this film was a joke. Ruben Fleischer deserved a nomination more than this guy.

I agree that Reitman's direction in terms of visuals/symbolism was kind of lacking- not bad, but not great, but I think his Oscar nom was for his direction of the actors, which was actually really impressive.

I feel like that could have been a really successful teaser/trailer for the film. I always like trailers that don't give anything away. This scene doesn't fit with the rest of the film so I understand why it was cut but still captures its ideas.
  • RJBlakeAAU
I totally agree. When I saw this I was like "This would have been an amazing teaser." However, it would have also been a more misleading teaser. Love the movie and the segment is really cool but I think it would have been too surreal/heavy handed at the point in the movie. Such a great movie that was totally robbed last night.

wasn't a fan of the film, but I like this scene a lot. It would have worked fine given the waking up aspect of the end and the akwardness of it. Should have included it.
  • Mr. Obvious
Anyone notice this guy's name is the same as the songwriter behind "The Weary Kind"? I just did...probably old news...haha.
  • dagreenman18
i pretty much agree with everyone here. Awesome, but would be a bit too WTF in the final. Must have been really fun to shoot though.
  • quintushalls
I was disappointed the nudity was a body double when the woman has posed naked before.
  • presto117
that's not her? k, well, who was the double? cause that was the most amazing ass i've ever seen.
  • She has said in interviews that she would have done the scene were it not for the fact she had just had a baby and felt that her post-preggers body would have been something no one wanted to see
  • Nick
I've actually heard her say that was Reitman's concern, not hers and that she insisted on him allowing her to shoot it and then he ended up using the take shot with the body double instead.
  • I loved that scene. But I guess it would of been to heavy and odd for final cut, but I wouldn't of minded it one bit.
  • freemachine
"Ground control to Major Tom"...way to obvious and I'm glad they cut this scene. His isolation was made explicitly clear and any symbolic representation of it would have just been over the top.

BTW, this movie got robbed at the Oscars last night, big time! Should have won best actor and best adapted screenplay, at least.

I saw that scene 30 years ago in this movie called The Graduate
  • kfizz
Im still shocked it is taking place in omaha my home town. Its kinda funny to see thous places also some may not have been filmed here in that part. But the part with the taxi at the airport was omaha the getting out of the taxi was and i think even the part of the building and the skyline are omaha.
  • TrailerAddict has the Omaha montage. That one is really great. Very long.
  • Rachael
I am so glad they decided to cut this from the final film. I love the segment on its own but I agree that the metaphor would have been way too heavy-handed in the context of a full-length film expanding on the same theme. Would make a great short.
  • tactrlrs
love the scene. Wouldn't have minded if it made the final cut.
  • "Of course, I would recommend watching the clip unless you’ve already seen the film, as the deleted scene in question was to be set late in the film."

Peter I hope you mean NOT to watch it? Maybe?
  • Why is the cover art for the Blu Ray so ugly?
  • Sky Bluu
I Agree, im a sucker for shiney bluray covers. But this one almost puts me off. Hopefully the cover is different in aus. Then again i wont be buying this on bluray...i save my br purchases for blockbusters and movies that really deserve the extra buck for the hd...i.e. iron man or tdk
  • Derek
Interesting, dont know how it would have worked but it is still a really cool scene.
