The cast for Lee Daniels‘ next film, Selma, is really starting to shape up. A while back there was rumor that Robert De Niro would be on board as Alabama governor George Wallace, and that news was confirmed by Movieline. Daniels now also has Hugh Jackman in the cast (announced last week) and, seemingly, Lenny Kravitz, who did good work in Precious.

Having Hugh Jackman signed is obviously the biggest casting news for the film, and we slipped on reporting it last week when Daniels mentioned the casting to USA Today. We don’t yet know who Jackman will play, and since the film is said to largely center around the relationship between Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Lyndon Johnson, it seems safe to say that Jackman won’t play either of the leads. Beyond the core relationship between King and Johnson, the film also features the voting rights and desegregation campaigns and civil rights marches that centered in Selma, Alabama in the mid-’60s. So Jackman could be one of a number of activists that had a part in that movement.

That’s where Lenny Kravitz comes in. While talking to E! last night before the Oscars, Kravitz said he’d been cast in Selma, as civil rights activist Andrew Young. An Alabama pastor in the late ’50s, Young encouraged African-Americans to register to vote and became a friend of Dr. King. He moved to New York, but returned to the South during the Civil Rights Movement, during which he was jailed for taking part in demonstrations. This could be a relatively large role for Kravitz, depending on how Daniels is arranging Selma. [via The Playlist]

I’d really like to see Daniels co-direct a film at this point. He may be able get great performances out of his actors, as evidenced by Precious, but seems prone to making stylistic and visual choices that totally undermine those performances. The rape scenes and flashbacks in Precious are simply terrible, as are the dream/fantasy sequences. I’m worried, frankly, about how heavy-handed this movie will be.

To say that Lee Daniels is going to give an accurate view in his upcoming movie SELMA is ABSOLUTELY FALSE. Don' t be fooled that the African -American Gay Film maker can give the view of the civil rights leadership..Because that would mean he researched further than Brad Pitts POCKETS. He has openly denounced any research from black leadership and the movie portrays a KKK sheriff as the hero. Daniels needs to replace the cracked lense in his head before he attempts to portray black america.
  • I believe Plan B is producing this. Brad Pitt's production company can be hit or miss. I'm hoping for a hit.

And isn´t possible that Jackman will be Wallace and DeNiro Lyndon? There was really said nothing about what role will DeNiro have and I think he would fit better for Lyndon.

To suggest that an Academy Award nominated director needs a "co-director" simply because you didn't enjoy the dream sequences (which were filmed EXACTLY the way there were described in the book, which no one seems to bother to read before critiqueing the film) is, to me, pure nonsense.

Another film about the struggle of Black Folks......What has happened to the imagination and original storytelling ?
  • MarsellusWallace
This film will not be about "the struggle of Black Folks", but about a pivotal moment in history where people, of all races and religions, fought for equal treatment of their fellow citizens. Perhaps you should educate yourself on these historical events before you post ignorant comments.

Looks like one-trick-pony Daniels is getting ready for his second piece of rocially-inspired Oscar bait. Will there be unnecessary snap zooms and intrusive camera work in this, too? If it were a kung-fu film, I'd understand.

that's a strong accusation unless you've seen all of his movies and he does the same thing over again and again. (But most directors do)

Otherwise, you can't say 'one trick pony' based on one movie; there's no argument there.

I think Anthony Anderson could be MLK, he has shown lots of potential in past films and I could see Daniels drawing a great performance from him. I agree with Russ that Lee Daniels needs polish on his flashbacks and dream sequences, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that they were "simply terrible." He could just cut them out of Selma altogether, because everything besides his weaknesses is damn good film making.
  • What African American actor would turn down the role of MLK? Not a racist thing, but the part requires a lot of bravado and charisma, pure Oscar bait. The competion will be fierce, alright.

I hope this is filming in Alabama. I spent all day yesterday in Selma for the Bloody Sunday rememberence, and it would be nice to see them recreate everything in the same spots where it happened.
