JJ Abrams Tom Cruise Mission: Impossible 3

When it was first announced that JJ Abrams and Tom Cruise were reteaming to co-produce a fourth Mission Impossible film, a lot of factors were unknown. Would it be a reboot, a spinoff? Would Tom Cruise return as Ethan Hunt? Would JJ Abrams also direct? Well now we finally have our answer — Paramount Pictures has signed a deal with Tom Cruise to reprise his role as Ethan Hunt in M:I-IV. The bad news is that JJ Abrams is sitting this one out.

Finke is reporting that Ethan Hunt will be the main star of the film, debunking rumors that the character would only appear to pass the torch to a new spy. However, the new sequel is being looked at as a “reboot” to the series. The plan is for Cruise to make this his next film and start shooting by summer 2010 for a tentative Memorial Day 2011 weekend release.

Here is what we know so far: Tom and JJ developted”a really cool idea” for a fourth adventure, which Abrams turned into “an insanely long outline”. Abrams employed Alias‘ scribes Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec to write a screenplay based on the treatment, which Abrams once joked “is probably longer than the script.” Applebaum and Nemec were well into the second act of a first draft when we last checked in (mid-January 2010), and Abrams seemed very pumped on the project. But who should direct?

They offered the director gig to David Cronenberg - he's considering it!

I seriously feel the below mentioned directors will be able to give the MI series a change of direction, essential for a reboot.

    1. Spike Jonze
    2. Ivan Reitman
    3. Russell Mulcahy
    4. Coen brothers
    5. Danny Boyle
    6. David Crorenberg
    7. Terry Gilliam
    8. Francis Ford Coppola
    9. Mira Nair
    10. Oliver Stone
  • Whether it’s a reboot or spin off as long as they don’t try to bring in a new spy to partner Ethan and cast Shia LaBeouf in the role I won’t mind who directs it.

i would love to see MI4 in a more realistic feel, without the stylish action. neil blomkamp would be awsome

"The bad news is that JJ Abrams is sitting this one out." I don't see that as bad news at all, MI3 was ok at best. Another director is needed to put another spin on the MI franchise

Peter Berg, Park Chan-Wook or Johnnie To.

Just as long as it's not John Woo again i'll be fine. MI2 was one of the worst action movies i have ever seen. The other two MI movies has been great.
  • Jason Reitman, Wes Anderson, PTS, Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh. Wait... Maybe on a more serious note. Rian Johnson, Marc Webb (If he doesn't do Spiderman) Brian Singer.

This is impossible! I remember that Paramount Picture fired Tom Cruise a year ago and Tom went on United Artist. That makes no sense! I heard that MI4 is gonna be a woman instead Tom Cruise. I think its too late for Tom Cruise to return to MI again....
  • Oh no! When I heard this earlier, I didn't see that Abrams wasn't returning. All my excitement for this was just shot. MI3 was much, much better than I expected, but now I'm very wary of the fourth.

When are they gonna reboot Hollywood?
  • Did Bad Robot help produce MI3? Or was it just Tom Cruise?
Also, is Bad Robot producing this one or is it UA? I'm curious.

On a side note, the first Mission Impossible had the best thing going for it with the twists and tactical espionage, I hope the series returns to these roots.

    James Cameron to Direct!
  • John
I say let Peter Berg direct it.
  • Clem
Give it to Jack Bender so he can get a "second chance" in the big screen.

    Glad Abrams is out.
Also, I thought this was being released in a few months, just renamed to Knight and Day.
  • Please let it not be Pierre Morel after the abomination of trash that was From Paris With Love.
  • Too bad Abrams isn't returning, MI3 was my favourite and although I don't trust him on TV shows, he is great when he is working in more limited time restraints, I loved Star Trek as well

    John McTiernan or Kathryn Bigelow.

Jason Bourne vs. Ethan Hunt! I'd love to watch Damon kick the shit out of Cruise for 2 hours.
  • waqman
And then have James Bond bullet both in the head. There can only be one badass Spy franchise.
  • Except that Tom Cruise is way more of a bad ass then Matt Damon.
  • joker93
    um... no.
  • ventricity
tom cruise is way more resilient at least. matt damon is just a mama's boy, he doesn't have the cocky sleaze that cruise brings to the table
  • Neil Blomkamp's Mission Impossible IV.

    Am I wrong?
  • Wow, I think this is fucking awesome news.
  • While it would probably totally work, it would still feel strange to have a MI flick without Tom Cruise.
  • Abrams is like "To be, or not to be."
  • waqman
"Bad news is that Abrams won't direct"

Ummm...that's good news actually. All hate for the director aside, this series so far has a tradition of getting a new director for every film.
  • lest78
Agreed. Tom Cruise even said years ago that he envisons the MI series as being like the Alien films in that each film will have a new director so that each film has it's own distinct look.
  • As long as the director does exactly what Tom Cruise says.

    Right, John Woo?
  • fanboy_d
Ken Olin should direct. Devindra? Back me up!
  • Is Devindra a Ken Olin fan? I don't think so. Duh.
  • fanboy_d
What do you mean "I don't think so. Duh." What are you talking about?
  • wonka bar
Bring on David Fincher to direct!
  • Settle down, there's no need for a Mission Impossible film to run longer than 140 minutes.
  • I seem to remember reading that Fincher wanted to make his R-rated version about the Chinese black market in the bodily organs of executed prisoners, or something wild like that.

I'd like to see that one.
  • Bauerbagnotjacksack
Ha. That's not gonna happen. Maybe Joe Carnahan?
  • Give it to Mark Romanek...
  • Did you read your own article...didn't you just say it wasn't going to be Cruise training a new spy?
  • I believe he meant that it would not be a film in which Cruise shows up in the first act to pass the torch to someone new and then disappear.
  • wonka bar
I'm not a fan of Cruise, but i did enjoy MI3 very much...the beginning of MI3 was great.
  • Well, J.J. is a hit and miss type of creator so I'm sure it won't completely ruin the film.
  • Bull
Agreed. MI3 is a medicore film. Looking forwrd to someone else direcitng.

How do you "reboot" with the same actor?
  • Zan
Cruise and Abrams were co-producing a new M:I movie. That's all they knew at the time. They didn't know if Cruise would actually star in it. It is conceivable that Cruise might've produced a reboot with a different star. But now we know that Cruise IS coming back as Ethan Hunt.
  • More like, how do you call it a 'reboot' when there's no continuity between the films?
  • StarFox203
Exactly. Every film in this series has been a reboot of some sort. There's no thru line between the films - they all just star Tom Cruise. He should probably sit it out and do a whole new M:I movie with a new team. And get Peter Graves back.
  • It makes enough sense to me. A reboot is reinventing the way the story is told. Look at the first mission impossible compared to the path the 2nd and 3rd took the series in - it has turned from a espionage film to another james bond action packed blockbuster. I personally have lost all interest in the series because of this. They could get a smarter director, smarter script, keep it semi-realistic, and it would feel fresh while still feeling like a mission impossible movie.
