nolan-superman

I’m sure quite a few people have called for something like this in discussions about what Warner Bros. should do to make Superman work on the big screen: the studio is reportedly turning to Christopher Nolan to act as a “godfather” to help shepherd development of a new Superman film. Before we go further, at this point Nolan is not writing, and is not directing. Rather, Nolan would play more of a mentor’s role to help the film get moving. In other words, WB wants him to communicate some of the methods he used to reinvent Batman on film to help Superman get off the ground in time for Warners to exploit the character before the rights go back to the Siegel and Shuster families.

Deadline Hollywood has the report, which doesn’t have many details on what we can actually expect to see. No surprise there, as Nolan has a movie to finish right now, and Deadline’s Finke and Fleming insist that a new Superman is in very early stages of development. The only sourced quote that will matter to most readers is, “It would definitely not be a follow-up to Superman Returns.”

Finke and Fleming also reiterate that Jonathan Nolan and David Goyer are actively working on a Batman 3 script right now; they say that Christopher Nolan came up with a story idea and that they’ll write a draft while he finishes Inception. Yep, I was quick to cast doubt on that yesterday when it was mentioned, and may have been too quick to do so. Happy to be wrong about that one, and you’ll have to excuse the healthy skepticism that is built into any new Batman report.

The think i want to know, how do you top the "Dark Knight"? I think the greatest quote from that being " You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villan" This statement holds true is so many aspects of life, look at politics for example. So many polaticians start out honest and work for the people, and what do they turn into? Someone everyone hates. Sad really.
  • Superman Return was completely destroyed by Bryan Singer....i hope they bring a bad a$$ super villian this time...

if another Superman movie has to be made
it must be made with the purpose of making Avatar Money.
Getting Nolan on board is step one .
A Full IMAX picture is step two.
the scale has to be bigger than Avatar or the dark knight.

First and foremost, it has to be a great film

As far as trilogies, what movie was better than the first 2?!
  • joker93
The Bourne Ultimatum, The Return of the King and Revenge of the Sith (in the case of the latter it wasn't hard to outdo the previous films though, but still)
  • plagueoftruth
Okay, I'm going to say this in all caps because I want it to be understood:

THE RIDDLER NEEDS TO BE IN THE NEXT BATMAN MOVIE AND NEEDS TO BE DONE RIGHT. NOT THE CRAZY SPANDEX RIDDLER BUT THE BRILLIANT CALCULATING RIDDLER AND HE NEEDS TO BE PLAYED BY MICHAEL EMERSON.
  • Slatters
Whoa, someone who thinks the Riddler should be in the next film?? My mind is blown!

i was referring to the project not Chris Nolan. Get your mind out of the gutter
  • If Nolan's not on as a director I'm not sure this news is enough to warrant getting excited over. Still, it'll be interesting to see where this leads.
  • JoeViturbo
How does the Godfather get paid anyway? Does the money "fall off the back of the truck"?. Perhaps he gets a small percentage, from each person involved in the movie, delivered to him personally, in blank envelopes.

This is good news. Nolan probably won't direct, but if he produces, we'll know its going to be handled very well. And I expect any Superman film associated with Nolan will be the polar opposite of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight in terms of tone. Superman is not Batman, and specifically both stories with both characters tend to be very different. I expect Nolan's Superman to be more of a science fiction/fantasy ala what Martin Campbell is doing with Green Lantern. We don't need an origin story. We just need a good Superman film where he hits somebody (perferably another super powered being), kicks ass, saves Metropolis and hooks up with Lois Lane. Just my two cents.
  • This is great news for Superman, I think.
  • wonka bar
In Nolan i trust; positive move for Warner Bros. Nolan's first job is to keep Singer away from Superman.
  • B DAwk
This is good. Superman is such a great character. I mean there is Superman, There is Clark Kent his cover, and there is Clark Kent/Kal El who he really is. The person that grew up in Smallville. I laugh at people who just write him off as a one note character. He could be so much more.

It would be great if they got a Scott Frank to write this if Nolan or his brother Jonathan don't take a stab at this. All it takes is the right talent who understand why this character works. That's why Nolan's Batman is so successful. He realized that the best Batman stories are usually the one's rooted in Crime Fiction. Batman Year one, Batman Long Halloween, The early Bob Kane stuff, etc..

Back to the Man of Steel, with Superman's powers the action in this film could be amazing. Unlimited things you can do with his x ray vision, freezing stuff with his breath, flying, super strength, and heat vision. Singer's version wasn't creative enough and the script just seemed lazy when it came to this stuff. It was too concerned about Superman's bastard kid and him stalking Lois Lane.

And really all they have to do to satisfy anyone is have him go against someone that is just as powerful as him. Braniac, Zod, Doomsday, Darksied.

I don't imagine this'll top The Dark Knight, because a decent third film is a rarity.
However, I still don't understand why people think that topping The Dark Knight is impossible. It was very good and all, but it wasn't untouchable. I think since Christopher Nolan has managed to make an entire career without one crappy film yet, he's quite capable of outdoing himself.

..now that you mention it (you=slashfilm), I wonder why DC didn't think of it earlier -- like, PLEASE HELP US NOLAN!!! WE DON'T WHAT TO DO!!!
  • Ryan
So...Nolan is the godfather, BRB photoshop time.
  • jason b
so here's the million dollar question: if (for example) neill blomkamp is peter jackson's 'protoge', then who will be christopher nolan's?!?!

holy shit i don't even have the slightest idea who to pick. it'd be pretty cool if it was a complete unknown who nolan introduces to the world. jesus we are in for a ride & a half.
  • JoeViturbo
It's funny how no one has mentioned that Nolan's job title is "Godfather". Doesn't anyone else find that the least bit odd?
  • Ron Burgundy
does that mean he'll be shot by Favreau and Downey Jr and later die in a garden with a orange peel in his mouth?
  • ScanCase
Doesn't it sound like Warner Bros has been watching the Marvel camp and said "We need someone like Jon Favreau to help over see our movies and be a public face as someone to oversee this franchise." Because this sounds just like that. Don't get me wrong Superman could definitely benefit from some of Nolan's input but this feels slightly forced. At the end of the day though I don't feel that we need more Superman in any way shape or form. I have the Christopher Reeve/Richard Donner films already.
  • Gary C
well, its purely rumour, we dont know if any of this is for realsies. plus nolan is a smart man, he wont just batmanify superman. his original films are at least as good as what he has done with batman. unlike other directors, his stamp isn't so clear cut.
  • This is happy news.
  • Home Run!
  • richardDOnner
its a home run ONLY if singer, routh and the johnwilliams music are OUT.

it will be a GRAND SLAM if it's as Ballsy as something like

Nolan's mentoring,"okay, make sure you closely shoot hand to hand combat scenes with a lot of cuts rendering them incomprehensible! Then make sure Superman talks like he's a deep smoker! Also make sure Lios Lane is as crappy as a love interest as Rachel Dawes!"

I kid, I kid! This is cool news.
  • Gary C
i found the combat to be good in TDK, but it was atrocious in begins. and even the small stuff from inception looks good. twas most likely bale doing the voice, but hey, EVERYONE knows that voice. a gift and a curse. and what did you expect holmes to do acting against bale or oldman? bah, all ridiculously nit-picky things. im curious to see where they take this if its actually true.
  • Oh yes! This is great news! I was just wondering about a Superman reboot,
  • Ron Burgundy
I hope they release it in a season other than summer...I don't know I just rather see a Batman during winter...Instead of waiting until July 2012 and compete with 10000 superhero flicks just release it in December 2011 and let it dominate. Its not like it will do any less business. I would still dominate during a summer of hero movies but I'd rather not have it get lost or add to the massive amount of cash I'll be spending those few months...

It's his dream too. He will never actually end up making the movie. Just talk about it.
  • Looks like it's cool to hate on The Dark Knight now. Jesus... give it a rest.

No trust me, it was cool to hate it before it even came out. I was there man... I was there.

after ironman2 the rest of their poorly envisioned properties will bomb

too bad sony have the rights to spiderman, so marvel had absolutely nothing to do with it. nice try though.
  • Kevin Smith wrote a fan-boy screenplay, this should be adapted!
  • Nolan can restore faith in anything at this point.
  • Yes Batman 3 is begining, this makes me happy....
