VOTD: The Mirror Scare

zz11d15f05

If you happen to use the bathroom while being stalked by a serial killer or a ghost/monster, watch out, because they’re right behind you. Last year we posted a video compilation showing the many moments from horror movies where the protagonist is trapped with bad cell phone reception. Today we’ve found another horror video compilation, this time focused on the dreaded and overused horror cliche - the mirror scare. Watch the four minute compilation, embedded after the jump.

this entertains me so much- OH SH HARRY FORD. awesome. and omgsh nooo it's the scientist from ninja turtles 2!!

I think the next one they should tackle is the "hit by a car" cliche. I'm tired of watching a character wander into the street, pause, turn around, then suddenly get smashed by a silent off-screen speeding car. It's used way too much.

What no mention that it's the same editor as the "Bad Reception" compilation? BOOOOO!

Would have been real good if at the end they had BRUCE LEE in "Enter the Dragon" Breaking all the mirrors. That shit dont scare him.

Like the Ringu one, with the reflection in the TV.
  • My favorite is probably An American Werewolf in London, just because it was the one that probably scared me the most, but in a weird, awesome way. Then SotD and Hot Fuzz. I loved the Hot Fuzz one particularly because of that slick editing right after that clip where Nicholas Angel slumps down right after - it was so quick but totally gratifying.

The one from Hot Fuzz was only in there because they wanted to put as many movie clichés as they could from Roger Ebert's little book of movie clichés.

The "mirror scare" is nowhere as cliche as the "look-away scare" (or is it double-take?). Well I don't know the actual name of it, but yeah you get my drift.
  • I actually don't =(

Ok, I'll admit the kid inside the mirror was pretty freaky
  • What was that last one? Not transcendent, but at least did something different with this mirror-scare thing

The name of that movie was The Broken. The rest of the film was a little predictable but still well done.

No Mothman Prophecies mirror scare? That scare made me jump but made me feel stupid that it's so fast, I didn't know whether it was happening or not.
  • I actually really enjoyed the one at :52

What was that one? Looks so familiar...

Whoever did that TOTALLY forgot the "Old Gangster Emceeing in the Bathroom" scene in GHOST DOG: WAY OF THE SAMURAI.

That would've made me such a happy man. And it's a classic.
  • Such a hack move that's this generation's version of the 'cat jump scare'. Instant demerit points for any director who does this.

I remember seeing this in the trailer for Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN 2 and thought "Yep, that's about as creative as you'll ever get..."
