Valentine’s Day Gets a Sequel: New Years Eve

Valentine's Day

File this story in the “I wish I were joking” pile: Gary Marshall’s ensemble romantic comedy Valentine’s Day doesn’t even open until Friday but Hollywood is already planning a sequel. According to Finke, the film’s producers have hired screenwriter Katherine Fugate write another holiday-themed film as a follow-up titled New Years Eve. The sequel/spin-off will feature some of the Los Angeles-based cast/characters from Valentine’s Day, in a new setting - New York City, over the course of 24 hours surrounding the new year.

Warner Bros execs will be reading the screenplay soon, and I’m sure opening weekend box office numbers will convince the studio to fast track the sequel. You see, the amazing thing about Valentine’s Day is that it packs a huge all-star cast: Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Hector Elizondo, Jessica Alba, Kathy Bates, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Topher Grace, Ashton Kutcher, Queen Latifah, Taylor Lautner, George Lopez, Shirley MacLaine, Emma Roberts, and Taylor Swift. Remarkably, it was filmed for under $50 million. Deadline claims that most of the stars “worked for discounted quotes and some back-end because they were able to film their parts quickly and then leave for other projects.”

why dusn't evryone stop moanin about what a rubbish film this is or how many rubbish actors are in it. if you don't like the film. don't watch it.

but your obviously bothered about it enough (or have a very sad life and ALOT of spare time)to take the time to go onto this site and ramble on about how much you dnt like the film/actors.

Nobody is forcing you to watch this film or the sequel. so get over it. GOSH!

    Why is this a movie?

If Ben Afleck was in it I would say it had every actor who used to almost have a movie career but the work dried up.

"Deadline claims that most of the stars “worked for discounted quotes and some back-end because they were able to film their parts quickly and then leave for other projects.”" -more like they hadn't been offered a movie part in over a year and half and jumped at the opportunity for some work to pay the bills even if it was an ensemble cast.

Thank god they are all going to be on Lopez tonight this week.

Doesn't the New Year's Eve ensemble comedy already exist? It's called 200 Cigarettes and it wasn't good then either.

The last movie (IIRC) that announced there would be a sequel before it came out was The Hangover. Are they trying to recreate that box office victory?
  • Obsidian
Hangover sequel wasn't announced till after it was out guy.
  • Justin Jump
No, he's right. They asked for a sequel before The Hangover ever was released, because test audiences were going through the roof.

Is this an early April Fools Day joke? Oh wait, "April Fools Day" is probably the third in the series. What en epic trilogy this is making out to be...

Is it just me or does George Lopez looks a lot like Cheech Marin?
  • It's simple - If you think this is a bad precedent on Hollywood's part, don't make the movie a hit. But you won't do it. You'll go see it because it's practically commanding you to see it with your significant other on Valentine's Day, you'll be angry that you bought into such a brazen contraption of a movie and, by then, it will be too late.
