Christopher Nolan's Inception

Is Christopher Nolan’s Inception going to be a gigantic mindfuck? In a recent interview with the Inquirer (not Enquirer), star Leonardo DiCaprio talked about what it was like working on the film, even though he (and the other cast/crew) didn’t always understand what was going on, even while they were filming:

The material and its complexity are what I’m attracted to…I’ve been lucky to work with people who want to tell stories that hit on different cylinders simultaneously. ‘Shutter Island’ is definitely that. ‘Inception’ is the same. It is Chris delving into dream psychoanalysis and, at the same time, making a high-octane, surreal film that came from his mind. He wrote the entire thing, and it all made sense to him. It didn’t make sense to many of us when we were doing it. We had to do a lot of detective work (laughing) to figure out what the movie was about.

Is there a chance that Inception could be more crazy than Nolan’s Memento? I hope so. Nolan has recently admitted that Inception is “expansive, I suppose you’d say, in four dimensions,” and that it is “the biggest challenge” he’s taken on so far.

The film’s logline is “a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.” The rumored plot claims Inception is about entering peoples’ minds/dreams. A technology to do so has been developed and is done through an injection. DiCaprio and his team supposedly work to enter the minds of other characters in order to steal/plant information.

Inception features Leonardo DiCaprio as Jacob, a CEO-type, Marion Cotillard (La Vie en rose, Public Enemies) as his wife, Ellen Page (Juno) as a young college grad student named Ariadne, who is also DiCaprio’s sidekick, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Arthur, an associate working for DiCaprio. Ken Watanabe will play the film’s villain, a man named Saito, who is blackmailing DiCaprio’s character. Tom Hardy (Bronson) plays Eames, a member of DiCaprio’s team. Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Sunshine) plays Fischer and Michael Caine is also involved. Inception hits theaters on July 16th 2010.

Sorta sounds like my 2006 feature film... Except it's not about dreams but multiple identities stuck in the mind of the main character. PLUS, it's waaaaaaaaaaay more surreal, bizarre, experimental... and yes, CONFUSINGLY absurd with a slap-hard wackiness vibe. For better of for worse! ; ) HEADS OF CONTROL : THE GORUL BAHEU BRAIN EXPEDITION. If anyone is remotely curious.

When it comes to mainstream success, that is confusing for the viewer, the first thought in my head is Lost, followed by 1984/Brazil.

ide fuck him, while nolan fucks me. Then we can all cry together at the end, because chances are the movie will finish in tears. I mean we'll videotape it.

    OMFG yes.

    Fuck 3-D.

Along with James Cameron, Christopher Nolan is top of the tree, in my opinion and I've loved all of his films - they seem to get better and better.

Anyway, I have to say, I'm not really that hyped for this... yet. I'm 100% certain when I eventually watch it, I will love it. But at this time - there's nothing that jumps out to me in the trailer that makes me like a rabbid dog to see it.
  • ventricity
inception will no doubt be anticipated and get a lot of buzz from nerds, but that doesn't equal success financially or critiqally.
i don't know, but i get a strong vibe that this is another "the fountain" - some liked it (mostly blind fanboys), most thought it was a sentimental mess by a director on a ego trip.
it remains to be seen though, i just don't think the premise is strong enough, it seems too messy to even explain what's it about, so the studio will give us the confusion style of marketing without really telling anything about the movie.

The way I see it, a lot was kept from the actors. They only did one scene at a time and maybe only got scripts for the scenes they were doing. I bet he did this so no one can leak the plot out and that he wants to present it that at the time, the actors know only what the characters know. I think once the cast saw the rough cut of the film, they then got the idea.
  • P for Patel..................
WHen the F**k are we going to get some news on a Dark Knight sequel. We deserve a announcement.... is CN going to do it? Yes or NO? projected release date??? C'mon.................................
  • My most anticipated film since The Dark Knight. Also, I can not Fucking wait for Kick-Ass, and Scott Mother Fucking Pilgrim.

It's going to be a good year.
  • The faith and trust we have in Nolan is staggering, the man simply delivers over and over. I'm thoroughly looking forward to Inception, especially because, even after the trailer, I still have no idea what the f*ck is going on!
  • quintushalls
I agree. But I worry. I said the same thing about Stephen Spielberg...and then he raped Indiana Jones. I cried for weeks. We didn't do anything. We just sat there and watched.

I cant not unwait to see this mewvie

I really like all of Nolan's movies. Insomnia is incredible. That boat scene which ends in Williams holding up the recorder, "the wild card". Love it all. Pacino was good too. The story was so well told via film.
  • MarkoP
Something tells me that this film is either going ot be really good or one big convoluted mess.
  • Gary C
i can see it being a mess for other directors, but not for the dude that did memento. that film was completely mixed up from an A to B standpoint, but at the end, everything sunk into place. i have faith.
  • Bruce
Nolan's too smart to make a "big convoluted mess". The movie could have its flaws, but Nolan is a sharp guy. He will make something of quality.
  • Justin Jump
Haha. I just had a thought. What if Inception is waaay stranger than any of us can even imagine? Like, one of those movies that takes a week just to begin to sink in. It's going to be hilarious to see the fanboys pouring out of the theater jazzed like little kids, claiming it's the best movie ever made, even though they have NO IDEA WHAT THEY JUST SAW.

I can see the messageboard posts now..

'Just got back from Inception! Christopher Nolan did it again!'

    'Yea? What was it about?'

'Well, let's see...there was a train....Paris folded in on itself, that was crazy....OH and there was this awesome shootout...uhhh...that one guy was on a motorcycle at one point....look, just trust me, it's GREAT'

Don't get me wrong, I'm reaaaaally hyped for this shit. I can really just see that situation going down.
  • In accordance, I'm predicting that Inception breaks the IMDB 50 in the first week.
  • I am glad that Chris Nolan is able to make films that make an audience think.

His movies and vision is completely unique and I'm glad that Hollywood is giving him so much money to make them.

Will this be a blockbuster, doubt it? Will it do better then The Prestige? I hope so.

The world of cinema needs movies like this.
  • Eklassenla
It will have to be pretty damned amazing to be better than The Prestige, which is, in my opinion, hands down Nolan's best film. Totally unappreciated.
  • i will admit that The Prestige is his best film, but I meant purely box office wise, sorry for not making that clear
  • PizpotGargravarr
He said "do" not "be" and I really, really can't see this making less than The Prestige. I mean you've got Nolan's name post-Dark Knight, a killer cast (not that The Prestige didn't have a good cast as well but this one is better IMO), a bigger budget and the fact that it's set in modern/possibly futuristic times which is more palatable to the filmgoing masses. The Prestige was also something of a downer which is rarely something mainstream audiences go for. So long as Inception isn't so big a mindfuck that it alienates everyone, I'd definitely say this will do better than The Prestige. As for whether it will be better than The Prestige is impossible to say at the moment but I'm very hopeful and I'm a big fan of all Nolan's work.
  • quintushalls
As mindfucks go, I think it will be more like 'Lost'-level rather than something like 'Being John Malkovich'.
  • freemachine
Nolan will bow before Cameron and suck it!
  • quintushalls
Nolan's film won't make as much money as Cameron's films by any stretch. The fact that Dark Knight did so well was surprising. This is Nolan at his best, which means it won't appeal to a general audience, but it will be the best movie of all time.
  • You mixed up the names.
  • lipslikeasukal
If I have to read another post on Inception that has the words "architecture of the mind", I am going to shit a bat-ahaped turd and batarang every post tagged with inception.

The most overused tag line ever. Doesn't make sense the first time, and is borderline bitchtastic the 417th time. Just for once, make an Inception post without that jack-ass description.

    End Rant.

By the way, I love The Prestige.
  • rainman
    So you don't get it.
  • 650, bro
i think its just "architecture of the mind" is dumb wording and its annoying as fuck because thats all we hear about the movie
  • [A]
So, Leo.. how does it feels to work with a great director in his prime..?
  • quintushalls
    Cameron, Scorsese, Nolan, etc.

I'd really like to find out who he thought was the best to work with.
  • odvan
So we could expect under 100M grosses. Perfect.
  • quintushalls
Watchmen money! But yeah, this could be a surprise like Avatar and pull in the dough. You'll see. I'll show ya. It's all part of the plan.
  • PizpotGargravarr
He's going to personally show you by going to see the film 4 million times.
But seriously, I hope it does well too.
  • Nono
    Why not just watch Paprika?
  • It's what I was thinking when they announced this. Since it's basically the same story.

But then again, so is Pocahontas and Avatar, and see how THAT turned out.
  • quintushalls
You don't really know that. I think it is more the same concept than the same story.
  • papasanchez
That's a wonderful film. I heard somewhere that might be transfering into the live action arena. I for one think they should leave it the fuck alone!

As for watching paprika instead of inception, I disagree. None of us can be sure what this film is similar too. Not right now anyway.
  • papasanchez
I am really looking forward to this. I'm a batman freak and a huge fan of nolans before and after his take on the batman, and I for one will be queing up for this bad boy come opening day. May I also add how fresh it is for a massive scale summer blockbuster to NOT have it's entire story disected before anyones seen it!

Even if you don't like Nolan you have to tip the cap on that one.
  • Poland626
This ALONE gives me reason to avoid any trailers or reviews before seeing it. I wanna be surprised! :D
  • Ben
Hello? Dreamscape. Quaid. That is the bar.
  • Rage'ahol
The bar Nolan will step over.
  • Fir3Wolf
Can Nolan do any wrong? I can't wait to see this movie. I was confused with each trailer and dying to know more.
  • ventricity
it will fail. it's not really that exciting, it has sort of been done before in one form or another, it doesn't strike a vein in popular culture like the matrix or the dark knight did. i mean, it has very little going for it other than it being confusing
  • mbellerbrock
While everyone may be attacking ventricity, I tend to share his feelings. This may be the craziest, most off the wall, awesome movie ever made that wins awards left and right, but unless some clever marketing is done I don't see Inception pulling in many viewers. Movies like these are never an easy sell to the audience.
  • How's this for clever marketing: they can put "From the director of The Dark Knight" on the mother fucking posters and trailers.
  • namepants
    Tobo + Nolan = greatness.
  • quintushalls
But will it have Stephen Tobolowsky?
