The fact that Clash of the Titans was being pushed back to April 2 to accommodate a last-minute conversion to 3D has been accepted as fact, even though Warner Bros. hadn’t officially said anything about the plan. Now there’s an official press release from the studio that removes any doubt. Yes, Clash of the Titans and the two halves of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows are being converted to 3D and will be released in 2D and 3D simultaneously.

Prime Focus, one of the companies that worked on 3D for Avatar, is doing the Clash of the Titans conversion. WB president of domestic distribution, Dan Fellman, expressed corporate excitement for the format change and said, “We are experienced and have been successful in the conversion of 2D to 3D going back to such hits as The Polar Express, select scenes in Superman Returns and the last two Harry Potter films.”

(February 2, 2010 – Burbank, California) Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that the upcoming feature film “Clash of the Titans” will be released in 3D worldwide on April 2, 2010.   The film will simultaneously be released in 2D.

In making the announcement, Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, said, “We are experienced and have been successful in the conversion of 2D to 3D going back to such hits as ‘The Polar Express,’ select scenes in ‘Superman Returns’ and the last two Harry Potter films.”

Fellman continued, “We are confident in the constantly evolving 3D technology, and the results for ‘Clash of the Titans’ will be presented onscreen with the highest-quality images available today.  Based on our track record, we know that audiences are embracing the RealD and IMAX experiences, and we see many opportunities on our film slate to provide moviegoers with these great options at the multiplex.”

Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Picture Group, said, “We’re excited about 3D and look forward to bringing a rich, involving visual experience to audiences around the world.”

Additional titles on Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2010 film slate that will be released in 3D (in addition to 2D) include “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” (July), “Guardians of Ga’Hoole” (September) and “Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows, Part 1” (November).

Warner Bros. Pictures’ 3D partner on “Clash of the Titans,” Prime Focus, was one of the visual effects vendors on “Avatar,” which received an Academy Award nomination for Outstanding Visual Effects.

ugh this means i won't be seeing any of those three movies in theater probably unless there's a decent 2d showing time. even though i hate 3d as a whole because they've been using the same technology they did when it came out decades ago and haven't improved on it at all, a movie that is made in 3d is one thing but making things 3d that aren't supposed to be is another. they say it's a successful conversion, but it's not (and let's face it The Polar Express was a horrible horrible movie).

Someone asked above what's the difference between 3D and converted to 3D... There's a HUGE difference. Something like UP is rendered in 3D so it has depth, or Avatar that is shot with special cameras that shoot in 3D (i think the cameras are stereoscopic like your eyes). BUT 3D conversion means that someone at a computer is drawing lines around the edges of the elements in the shot and separating them like a pop-up book. So for something like Superman Returns, you're looking at a cardboard cut-out of superman flying off above the flat panel of whatever is behind him. It's exactly like those 3D cardboard movie posters in the Lobby. Neat, but you wouldn't want one in your living room. It's fake 3D. And it looks fake. It looks horrible, and everything feels too close to you and they should never do it again.

Native 3D is AWESOME. 3D conversion is actually worse than colorization. Leave these movies alone!

This 3D phenomenon is pretty worrying. It's just not better than 2D yet. Basically Hollywood is deliberately downgrading from a financial incentive.

But for these two films it's not bad due to the fact that the 2D is still available and they were shot with the intent of a standard 2D movie. If they keep letting directors shoot standard 2D films and then going back and converting them that's absolutely fine with me.

plus, a few weeks back lucas announced both star wars trilogies re-re-released but in 3D! its not just new movies folks, in ten years we'll be dealing with re-releases in 3D at every turn for Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Terminator 2, all Aliens, etc., etc.

This isn't surprising. Whenever a genre is proven successful, a dozen other films get mass-produced in the same way. After Gladiator, we got Troy and Alexander, after LotR and Harry Potter we got every fantasy book adapted, now Avatar's success will bring even more motion capture-CGI films and even more 3D. I'm already sensing overkill, but what can you do: if its profitable, it will prosper in hollywood.

can they up-convert it to being a good film?

Hey, looks like they dropped Armstrong's score in favor of something a little more "300." Tells me all I need to know about this film.

I'm so with you on that Medusa scene. I haven't seen that movie in ages, but continue to have very fond memories of it from my youth.

I'm hopeful for the new version but only because - ALL I really want is to be taken for a ride and have some nostalgia pandered my way.

I think they can do that.
  • Am I the only one that thinks this movie looks like shit? I'll miss the shitty claymation effects from the original...

If they can get the Medusa scene to be as suspenseful as it was in the original (when I was a kid at least), I'll be happy...

I was kind of excited about a CotT remake at first. I keep getting less and less excited about it. It's starting to enter "Let's hear some word of mouth first" territory.

f*ck it. make everything in 3d. waste waste, waste, waste
  • I can accept and expected them to convert 'Clash of the Titans' to 3D, after all every action nowadays isn't technically classed as action if a piece of scenery isn't flying into your face in a blurry visual mess! But 'Harry Potter'? I quite like the Harry Potter films, and don't see where they are going with this one. A girl I know is a 'Potter-Head', she loves EVERYTHING (emphasis on everything...) Potter, and a few weeks ago I joked about 'Deathly Hallows' being in 3D and she said; "Shut up, why would they wanna ruin the last two films." Hmm...

SO what exactly is the difference between "filmed in 3D" and "3D conversion?
  • Filmed in 3d = Filmed with special 3D-cameras.
    3D Conversion = Making a 2D film 3D by editing(not the best explenation)..
  • theJOker
One is filmed in 3-D and the other is converted to 3-D.
  • plagueoftruth
I don't mind 'Deathly Hallows' being in 3D. I'm kind of excited about it, in fact. I'm just glad that there's a 2D version in case the conversion sucks.

I'm not a big fan of conversion. Other than 'The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D' I don't think it's been done well (although plenty of people disagree.) 'Avatar' was exceptional in 3D, as was 'Cloudy With a Chance of Metballs' and 'Coraline,' but those were made for 3D. The move to convert every tentpole release into 3D is purely trying to ride the wave of 'Avatar's' success - it lacks artistic integrity. I'm a supporter of 3D but I'd rather they just start developing with 3D in mind from the beginning.

One thing I hope is that with DH, the entire film is in 3D this time unlike OOTP and HBP. I'm willing to give it a shot.

Thank God they didn't persuade Nolan to convert Inception in 3-d
  • sideshowRaheem
People seem to be taking this news as if they can only see "Clash of the Titans" in 3D. Nobodies forcing you if you don't like it go to one of the thousand or so 2D screenings.
  • I think the biggest gripe is that we see this as a way for the studios to steal more money from the unsuspecting moviegoer, just like with the whole LieMAX fuck up.

As movie nerds it's our job to inform the masses!
  • sideshowRaheem
Yeah but at this point no one has seen one of these movies with the 3D conversion so no one really knows if it's terrible or not.
  • bennybrady
We've seen it... They did the same thing with (bits of) Superman Returns... it was awful.
  • EbonPinion
Ah, but at THIS point, we have seen Clash, and it WAS terrible.
  • Obviously the real news here is that Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore is getting a 3D release.
  • Guest
Holy Hell people stop supporting this all 3D all the time thing. Avatar was cool in 3D, but that has nothing to do with any other movie. I don't want to see Harry Potter in 3D. I hope no one wants to either.
  • Colonel_Kurtz
I don't want to see Harry Potter in 2D, 3D, 4D, 38DDD, or any other D, but that's besides the point.
  • Brendan McD
I might be in the minority on this one, but does anyone else dread this push towards doing EVERYTHING in 3D?
  • wonka bar
YES, i dread this with you!!, it's 3D...or it's IMAX...or it's whatever new thing the studio can do to jack up the prices at the theatre. I'm fine with traditional film.
  • joker93
Absolutely. I mean, I don't hate 3-D itself... I just hate its misuse. This last-minute conversion is just plain fucking pathetic. The only films of '10 I'm going to watch in 3-D are Toy Story 3 and Tron Legacy. Screw the converting.
  • manuel
apparently you don't comment much on here because a lot of people on /film don't like their films converted to 3-D or at all. I like 3-D if it's supposed to be in 3-D, like Coraline or Avatar. Other than that I just like my good ol' 2-D.
  • theJOker
I brushed my teeth in 3-D this mOrning. So yeah, I don't see a problem.
  • theJOker
True. Sometimes I wear contacts in order to see them.
  • Blackstar
Yeah, but you didn't need special 3D glasses to see your teeth.
