First Photo of Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy

Hey, I didn’t know Jeff Bridges was in a remake of Logan’s Run! He looks really awesome in this first image from…oops. That’s Bridges in Tron Legacy, isn’t it? And is that a disc attached to his back, or is he just happy to have an Oscar nomination? Refresh yourself on details about the dual characters for Bridges and get a high-res version of the image after the break.

I like that this first real image of Bridges calls back to the Comic Con teaser, aka the VFX Concept Test footage. That stuff isn’t actually going to be in the film, remember. It was just created as proof of concept. But looking at this, it seems that the test footage is very similar to stuff that will be in the final film.

When we last heard from Tron director Joseph Kosinski, he said that Bridges would be playing two characters: the ‘real world’ Kevin Flynn and a new version of his digital character, Clu. “I’d say he’s Clu 2,” the director said. “There was a Clu in the first film who looked like Jeff but was very simple in terms of his abilities. He’s very stiff. Clu 2 is a second incarnation of Kevin’s avatar. He doesn’t only look like Jeff, but he can think like him too. So it’s a whole new level of artificial intelligence.” So which one is this? The disc suggests Clu, but we don’t know for sure.

The official synopsis reads like so:

TRON: LEGACY is a 3D high-tech adventure set in a digital world that’s unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (GARRETT HEDLUND), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (JEFF BRIDGES), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the digital world of Tron where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant Quorra (OLIVIA WILDE), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey of escape across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

If this movie is a success (and I think it will be), I hope they go back and redo the effects in the first movie. Bring them a bit up to date, like Lucas did with the new release of Star Wars.

I also hope this is just the first in a long series of movies. The world of Tron has a lot of potential. Much more than one movie can show.

"unlike anything ever captured on the big screen"
Well I'd hope it's not unlike the original but I see what they mean.

Jeff Bridges is on fire right now. Even if this movie blows he is still recognized as a good actor with a diverse filmography.

I guess I am the only one on the planet that wasn't impressed by Tron.

The Tron 2.0 video game had something called "Tron Legacy" in its plot: "Legacy" was a rewrite of the original Tron program that, once compiled, would kill any users in the computer system.

I have no idea if the title or anything else from the game was lifted for the movie, but it'd be a hell of a coincidence if they aren't.

I know I'll sound like a heathen to anyone born before me, but I hope this movie works well standalone. I don't think I have the stamina to sit through the first one...

You're right. You sound like a heathen.

I'm kinda kidding. But only kinda. The original Tron RULES!
I watch that film at least once every couple months. I understand that some amount of nostalgia factors into my love for Tron, but I was four years old when it came out. When I was old enough to appreciate it, the special effects were already dated. I just don't think that's a good reason to ignore it.

You unfortunately illustrate a concern I have with Tron: Legacy. People aren't going to view this as a sequel but as a replacement. The orginal Tron in all its retro glory will be ignored in the same way that many people don't respect 8 bit video games because of Hi-Def graphics.

Tron is wonderful. I'm sure if you gave it a chance you'd find that it doesn't take much 'stamina' to enjoy.

You're argument is pretty strong. I still have my Mega Drive and my SNES under my bed ;)

    I'm glad you get it.
  • I don't know man, the beginning and the ending both drags on and on. There's even a slow moving barge to serve as it's own metaphor.
And: couldn't tell you what happened in the last 15 minutes of that movie and I've seen twice.
  • and once again the future is white
  • of course it is, the future is like Singapore, it's taken out of the box about 5 minutes before you see it :P
