efron

This rumour comes from a UK gossip magazine, so it’s almost certainly just been made-up. All the same, there’s an interesting kink or two in the details…

According to OK, Efron has been hand-picked for the role of Peter Parker by Tobey Maguire. We’d previously heard that Sam Raimi had personally selected Nimrod Antal for the director’s chair, and that didn’t turn out at all - the job went to Marc Webb. Perhaps (just perhaps) Raimi and Maguire did nominate their favoured replacements, and these favoured replacements were Antal and Efron. That’s not impossible.

Efron is currently making a concerted effort to get on board some good projects, and is currently tied-up with Brian Michael Bendis, creator of Ultimate Spider-Man, the comics that have inspired this new reboot of the movies. In a universe where Bendis has come over to Sony to redraft the new Spidey films, maybe Efron could have come with him. The questions is… do we really live in that universe? I doubt it, but it certainly doesn’t seem like too horrible a place.

Note how I didn’t even dignify the Hudgens element of the OK story with any discussion. That certainly has a bad smell about it. And that $9 million pay out? Not on an $80 million budget, I’d say.

So, have OK gotten a hold of a legitimate piece of news here, a little tidbit from inside Efron’s circle, and then padded it with made up bumph? It’s more likely they just made it all up, of course. That’s the line I’m taking.

Bendis is very good at revealing little hints at his career moves via his Twitter account (recently: “one of my all time fave artists handed in an issue of a book i wrote today and it’s perfect. an artist i’ve never worked with before”) while never actually giving away all of the facts. Are there any hints he’s working on a Spider-Man script? If you’ve spotted any, please do share - because I can’t sniff out a thing.

I haven’t actually seen any Zac Efron movies so I can’t speak to his ability as an actor, but two things scream wrong to me about him.

    1) He’s very very pretty. Spiderman is not. Peter Parker is supposed to be a bit of a nerd, a misfit, someone who would NOT get the girl. Zac Efron most certainly gets the girl. At a mere mention of his name, thousands of teenage twats moisten.

    2) Spiderman 3 made Spiderman a douche, and that’s a major reason why it failed. You can say Zac can act, but after High School Musical and its sequels, you cannot tell me he is not a douche. For success, the new movie must establish Spiderman as someone who is most definitely not a douche.

I like Anton Yelchin, and I think Zach Gilford (Matt Saracen on Friday Night Lights) could be interesting.

I could go with Zac being spidey, however... the studios are veying for teen spidey, so no.
  • RainMan
Nimrod Antal is a fucking hack. I hope he doesn't ruin Predators.
  • glen
why do they do this spiderman is human and gets older not younger or are we having another peter parker getting bitten story. im a massive marvel fan and i feel disney are going to destroy the good name of marvel......shit again
  • Tom
Glen, Marvel/Disney are not in control of this. This is Sony.

Disney is going to repair Marvel, so they don't have to depend on foil covers and hit or miss movies to survive. Disney knows what they bought and they'll do well by the characters. No short term shitty profit grabs.
  • If Zac Efron truly is cast as Spider-Man, I will yet so many curse words it won't be funny.
  • Maughtry
Efron was fine in HSM for what it was. But he was awful in Me and Orson Welles.
  • Tom
I fucking said this would happen. The ladyboy who wears false eyelashes and rouge in public is your new Spiderman. Makes all of the idiots who pissed and whined about Tobey Maguire look like whining, pissing idiots, doesn't it?
  • Zac Efron would bring a huge audience into the cinema...example(twilight). But the audience is already going to be confused...Most consumers dont look at movie news. All they will see is "Spiderman: Now more darker" and be like WTF? wheres toby maguire.

No matter what the choice on who spiderman is, the audience is still gonna be scratching their heads.
  • moviefan
yea i doubt this is true. since they want to make the money on a lower budget and the last official word was they wanted to go with less known/unknown actors.
  • chris
auditions should be held for spiderman. i want to see an unknown portray peter parker.
  • Ruiner
As if this BS couldn't get any worse. Hopefully when this piece of shit bombs Marvel will get the film rights back and repairs the damage "Peter Parker in High School Musical 4!" causes. God I hate Sony for all this, they are determined to make "Spider-Man 3" look like "Citizen Kane". Whether Effron can act is fully debatable, but he is still a terrible choice for the role. The fact they are trying to reboot a franchise that started less then 10 years ago is such a joke. I realize Hollywood believes we stupid regular people have attention spans measured in nano-seconds but this is just pitiful on their behalves. Hey, would someone please come hide my PS3 before I smash it ?
  • SnarkyMark
they should just cut to the chase and cast will smith. problem solved. check please?
  • Matthew
How do they come up with such stupid stories?? And it would be completely out of the point to cast Zac Efron if they wanna take Spiderman in the high school direction. He'll be 25 in 2012 just 2 years younger than Tobey Maguire was when the first year came out so they'll lose the high school element pretty fast again since each movie will take 2-3 years to produce.
  • Liam
I thought one of the major reasons for the reboot was money? Surely Zac Effron doesn't come cheap... I figured they'd go with relative unknowns to save money, ditch any baggage the actor may have had in past roles, and bring someone new to the forefront. Effron brings NONE of that to the table. I agree with others, his talent isn't in question, he's a decent actor. But he's not Peter Parker.
  • Angry Fan
Zac Efron is too good looking to play Spider-Man. This is fucking bullshit. I will not see this movie if Peter Parker is played by a goddamn Gucci model.
  • Ezekial
As most people have said, Efron is a good actor, but I don't see him playing Peter Parker.
  • xorith
    not geeky enough.

reminds me too much of the dancing tobey.
  • starscream9289
Gentlemen, I've had a good run.

Now I will proceed to hang myself.
  • HHHH
    i'll join you
  • eedeesee
if you want to kill yourself because of this, go ahead, cuz your life mustn't be too flash hot.

    relax, its probably fake anyways.
  • Faith
    OMG!!!!
I wish that this don't happen. I hate Zac Efron, and see he play peter parker ( an heroe that i love ) should be terrible -_-".
  • Topolab
If this is true, I don't think its that bad of a choice. All these actors have to start somewhere, sure he did some shit roles, but even DiCaprio at one point was hated by many.
  • Name
It's not that he's taken "sh*t roles", it's that he doesn't fit the bill. He isn't a Daniel Day Lewis or a Heath Ledger who can completely become a different person for a role. He may be a good enough actor, but not for Spider Man.
  • Name
Why even report this? You even dismiss this in the article, and yet you still report this.
I also heard from inside of Miley Cirus's circle that she's gonna be the new Mary Jane. Maybe you should report on that too...
  • it will await the outcome and hoping that no errors cometiran from the beginning.
  • Ellen Page would make a great Spiderman.
  • MickJ
That's so random. I like it.
  • Then I'd have to have a crush on Spider-Man :(
  • nicky_cavella
you just all bashing him cause he has a disney background, hes an actor get over it.
  • Azeus
    Disney is evil
  • rouge_leader
dumbass, disney has no call in this, it's all sony.
  • Well, if there are any more song-and-dance numbers like we saw part tres, then we can all rest easy knowing Zac Efron will do the character justice.
  • zoey
well at least we will get a parker that can dance a little.
oooh and he can sing a little too!
  • gerstin
what the hell? zac cant act, nor has he ever done anything remote to an A lister like toby. If the studio goes this route, we are all going to cry like a bleeding puppy
  • chris
you're an idiot, go watch him in Me and Orson Welles as another poster stated.

Efron actually CAN act and I wouldn't mind him as Spider Man.
  • Name
I agree with you that he can act, but you are wrong that he would be a good Spider Man. This is not a point of contention, this is mere fact.
  • gah
this isn't about acting ability. who the hell is going to buy him as an awkward teenager?? he's probably the most handsome kid in america.
  • Name
    Spot on.
  • Shane
Zac Efron is actually a talented actor. Have you seen Me and Orson Welles? Yes, he did High-School Musical. Forget that. Everybody has to start somewhere. Look at Sean Penn.
  • Ci
Zac has the most annoying face ever.
  • gah
"Tobey, 34, stunned bosses at Universal Pictures last year when he announced he was quitting the megabucks franchise"

Too bad this is a Sony film. So many errors in this article why are you even dignifying this??????
  • I was under the impression that James Vanderbilt had already written the rebooted script, so this talk of Bendis writing seems a bit redundant.
  • Besides High School Musical, Efron has been pretty damn fun to watch. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing him as Spidey.
  • Kate
    Wow.

Even the 12-year-old tween girls in Zac's fandom knew this was fake and ignored it.

Why to go /Film for showing less maturity than the tweens you love to make fun off.
  • Shuckster
What do you mean 'maturity' anyway. This is as good a rumour as any. Rumour. RUMOUR..
  • jason b
i absolutely fucking LOATHE the 'ultimate' universe. just a bunch of god awful takes on classic characters, and if this is where we are headed...fuck im in for a long trilogy.

as for efron - the kids a damn good actor, i just think we're gonna be hearing a ton of names for a while.

anton yelchin is my first pick to fill maguires shoes, but we shall see.
  • riggs
i agree to a point, but ultimate spidey has been better than regular after the debacle that was a brand new day
  • ben
    just horrible.
