Mel Gibson Joins Shane Black’s Cold Warrior

melgibson

Something tells me that Edge of Darkness is going to do quite well at the box office, and remind us that Mel Gibson is still a viable leading man. We haven’t seem him in a lead role since Signs (and I wasn’t a huge fan of his roles leading up to that), and Darkness looks like it may reawaken the Mad Max we’ve missed for so long. Now we’ve learned that Gibson may be teaming back up with Lethal Weapon writer Shane Black for his post-Kiss Kiss Bang Bang directorial effort, Cold Warrior. Gibson is in negotiations for the lead role — a Cold War spy who emerges from retirement, and teams up with a younger agent to tackle a terrorist threat from Russia. There’s no word yet on who will play the younger agent, but you can already guess the short list that’s being considered.

While it’s great to see Black behind the camera once again, the film wasn’t written by him — the screenplay comes from Chuck Mondry. Knowing Black though, he probably couldn’t avoid adding his own touches to a “buddy” Cold War picture (or at least, I’m hoping he couldn’t). I’m not alone in absolutely loving Kiss Kiss, and I’m excited to see how Black handles (what appears to be) a more straight-forward spy film.

As for Gibson, this project sounds far more interesting than the upcoming Jodie Foster-directed The Beaver, or How I Spent My Summer Vacation. I’m also glad that he’s aiming for continued acting work, instead of returning to directing. I dug Apocalypto and Braveheart, but didn’t much care for The Passion of the Christ. He’s definitely a capable director, but watching a film like Signs makes me miss his on-screen persona. I’m just hoping that he can knock out a few more great roles before returning to the director’s chair, or perhaps find future projects to direct that he can also star in.

The caption under the picture should be, "I hate Jewish people and the Holocaust never happened"

Yeah your right Davindra, although i havent been impressed with any of his performances since his brillant star making cameo in FATHER"S DAY.

yeah i know you since edited your post from embarrassment, but i havent been able to post any sooner.

I'M JUGGLING 6 KIDS AND 7 GRANDKIDS! CUT ME SOME SLACK!

Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. for Cold Warrior please, that would be f-ing amazing. Clearly Downey Jr. is too old to play the much younger spy though.

Shane Black and Mel Gibson? I'm in theaters on day one. This film will be great, and I really enjoyed Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang.

Gibson is great as both an actor and a director, I think. I've enjoyed the movies I've seen that he's directed, although I admit I've actually only seen three of the movies he's directed (The Man Without a Face, Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ). However, I like him more as an actor than a director.

You haven't seen Apocalypto? It's the best film he's directed. So tense and up-tempo.
  • dangeer
I've been meaning to see it, but I just haven't got around to it unfortunately. One of these days it'll happen. :)

I totally agree with you marcomc2, Mel with JGL would be amazing
  • Please, PLEASE have Joseph Gordon Levitt team up with Mel Gibson in a Shane Black film. It would most likely be Fucking Awesome.

The plot for "Cold Warrior" sounds a little like "The Jackal" with Richard Gere.

Mel Gibson with Shane Black again? I agree with the article that Shane will definately add his own touches to the script like how he did with Last Action Hero and the one-liners in there are great!
"Hey, you wanna be farmer? Here's a couple of acres!" Haha, I dont know if that was from Shane or the first two writers but its funny.
This is great news, happy-happy day!

He hasn't done anything since Signs.

I disagree, Passion of Christ is Gibson's most accomplished film yet. There was no quarter given. I thought it was a much more powerful piece than Scorsese's adaptation of The Last Temptation. Still, the best film version of the greatest story ever told is Pasolini's The Gospel According to St. Matthew.

Agreed, "Passion" is an achievement on many levels. Though I can see someone not preferring to watch it ever again. "The Gospel According to St. Matthew" is better though. And probably the best movie about Christ...other than E.T.
  • JoBlowNow
Kinda lost all cred for the Passion when he started screaming about how much he hates Jews. Rewatch the film. New perspective.
  • You've never said anything you didn't mean when you were drunk? Give the guy a break. Passion makes the Romans look bad more than anything, and it's an incredibly well done film. Can't wait to see Mel back on the screen with all the stuff he's got coming out.
  • Steve_Kasan
well he didn't really screamed, kind of like slurred it. And do not forget the sugar-tits part.
Speaking of Passion, it really is a great artistic effort from Mel. From the sets, the costumes, the cinematography, the story beats, everything.

Yeah, I think he's way off base dismissing Passion as he did in the article.

Passion was an AMAZING flick from a technical and emotional standpoint. I don't believe in Christ, I'm an atheist (much to the chagrin of my parents...), but I was in tears watching Passion. Beautiful movie in all regards.
It's the only movie that has actually somewhat sold me these biblical characters as possibly human-- although, I should note that I have yet to see The Gospel According to St. Matthew. I'll seek that one out.

Despite all rumors and news (charity auctions, etc.), Gibson still has that sword in his Malibu home...I've seen it.
  • "There’s no word yet on who will play the younger agent, but you can already guess the short list that’s being considered."

This sounds eerily like Shia Labeouf's name is going to pop up at any minute, which scares me.

    Ugh...Shia LaDouche...

I been looking forward to Edge of Darkness, haven't seen a good Gibson performance in awhile. So him starring in more films sounds good to me.

... What if this leads to Lethal Weapon 5 happens? I wouldn't be excited based on the last couple of films but Black LOVED the script and after Kiss Kiss Bang Bang I'll watch anything he wants to do.
  • Kensei
Lethal Weapon 5 wouldn't be so bad just imagine two old cops running around out of breath with explosions and jokes with a guest appearance from Jackie Chan!
I joke, but I just hope they don't lead to a remake of Lethal Weapon, that would be worse in my opinion. But yes to make the long story short I hope Lethal Weapon 5 doesn't happen as well.
  • Solid
I disagree. Maybe it's because I'm getting old myself but I'd love to see the two characters from lethal weapon getting older together and dealing with not only their age but younger criminals. Like metal gear solid 4 but with gibson as old-snake. Yelling FREEEEEDOM as he pumps guys full of bullets.

Dane Cook needs to be in LW5.

It's one of those things that would have been great if not for the elapsed time since the last. It would really be pathetic to see Gibson, Glover, et al. running around L.A. chasing bad guys at their age. Add to this the fact that they've been increasing the cast with every iteration...so you'd just add one more show stealer into the mix, which just dilutes the whole concoction. Fuck the sequel and especially fuck a remake.
  • Name
Eh. I'm too old for this sh**.
  • Kensei
Yeah I couldn't agree more, it's the only thing that worries me about a film like this. You know two buddies out to save the world from bad guys someone is bond to shit out a remake idea for Lethal Weapon. It's like every other day some shit is getting remade (i.e. Spider-Man).
But yeah both Gibson and Glover are too old to do a big action movie now like Lethal Weapon. I mean I know I would like to see them both in some good action movies but not another Lethal Weapon.
  • John
He has not starred in anything since Signs.
  • freemachine
    win
  • Meant to word that differently, Signs is the last role I really enjoyed from home given his last decade of work. Mistakenly thought some of his crappy romcoms came afterwards. Fixing.
