Green Lantern Concept Art

lantern_concept_art

It’s worth remembering that the creation of concept art takes place specifically to explore a wide range of possibilities and to see which design routes will best suit the production, and as such, a piece of concept artwork does not necessarily represent the look of the film. Having said that, such images can sometimes reveal a little about the thought processes taking place, and the approach of the artists who are in the production’s employ.

After the break are a series of alleged design drafts for Martin Campbell’s upcoming Green Lantern picture. They reveal one possible look of some of the alien characters for the film, a look which will either get you excited or leave you despairing. Either way, don’t forget that a) the provenance of these images has not been fully proven and b) they might not be the preferred designs anyway.

Campbell recently said that Kilowog, Abin Sur and Tomar-Re would all appear in the film.

This is the reported design for Kilowog:

And here’s Abin Sur and two images of Toma-Re:

The Kilowog images first appeared on Cosmic Book News, the others on the Green Lantern Corps. message board. This is fairly compelling evidence that the images are of legitimate origin, seeing as the style is consistent throughout. I’m buying into this 99% myself.

In strongly related news, Variety have now revealed who will be creating the FX work for the picture. I’ve very often been disappointed in the CG work of Sony Imageworks but I’ll always be prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt, and besides, Kent Houston of Peerless and Karen Goulekas of KEG FX will also be bringing their teams in to work some shots and I like those guys a great deal.

It’s looking likely from all of the aliens on display that the Green Lantern picture isn’t going to be fully earthbound and that we’ll also be headed for Oa. Indeed, in another one of those MTV interview chunks (why can’t they just run the whole thing at once, the cheats?), Campbell said that ‘quite a bit’ of the film will take place outside of Earth’s atmosphere.

I dont particularly know much about Green Lantern but i know the pink/purple looking guy looks more like Richard O'Brien than Jackie Earle Haley.

The first, is a dude from de Fifth Element?

Even though, it's just concept art, I'm very happy that they're staying faithful to the original characters' design. Although, Abin Sur seems a little too pink to me.
  • Hmmmm...I think I'm digging this...

Very nice! This film is doing things right. Cannot wait to see Hal and Sinestro.

    Really looking forward to this.
  • These concepts look great. If they are legit, then I am very glad the film is going to be as colourful as it should.

Digging the look on Toma-Re and Abin Sur.

But there's something not quite right about the way Kilowog's looks.

As a big GL fan I was hoping for the scope of this movie to be a little bigger then Sony. ILM perhaps, specially for so much alien involvement. Then again I'd like Neil Adams to also be in there too but oh well time will tell.

Yea not bad looking concept work. If its real they are not that bad looking. Hopefully we will know soon enough what they will be like. I am hoping for phsyical actors in suits/makeup with some cgi enhancements to add on to looks.

As for sonyimage works yea i am not really that much of a fan of theirs. I hated their work for Superman returns or I am Legend. But they were good effects for the spider-man series and watchmen. So i am hoping they pull out the stops there.

I would love for these ones to be the final designs of those characters.

How anyone could say the Abin Sur design is not based on Jackie Earle Haley is beyond me
  • riggs
only doubt i have is in kilowog, dude is more massive (head and all) more pink and his face is meaner.
  • I would be looking Forward to this but I'm really not a fan of Ryan Reynolds....he is still slated to play the green lantern right? This concept art look really cool tho
  • Wally Jordan
This is going to be otherworldy guys!!! I LOVE THE GREEN LANTERN! YES FRICKING YES!!!!!!! YEAH!!! I've read the script and its good! I just hope they dont overdo the Iron Man feeling, it should have some serious moments, and I cross my fingers for the sequel being like the Dark Knight with Sinestros betrayel and turn to the dark side! GO GREEN LANTERN! MORE DC COMICS ACTION FILMS PLEASE!!!!!!! - The Flash has to come soon!
  • papasanchez
Where can I get a glimpse of the script?

This is lookin good freakshows! This is lookin reeeel good. I'm moist!

I actually dig the Kilowog design. Not as pink as i wanted him, but still looks good. I have faith in this project.
  • If anything, this concept art reminds me that I have absolutely no idea what The Green Lantern is about. Why are they all wearing the green lantern suit..

    -_-
  • Octoberist
to keep it simple: they are space cops.
  • manuel
They are all part of the Green Lantern Corps, a sort of unversal police. They use the power from their rings to protect all from the forces of evil, blah blah you get the idea. The Green is from the first lantern and the only power strong enough to go against them is the color yellow, and that's where Sinestro comes in. (Not a spoiler since he looks evil)
  • starscream9289
Because the name "Sinestro" didn't give it away.
  • RufusFirefly13
All the concept art looks great except the first picture of the full body of Kilowog. He's more massive than that...again that's my opinion and these are just concept art.

I really want to see Oa in amazing fashion, if Oa if still apart of the script.
  • Travis McGee
I have read the script and can't wait to see the final product.
  • I always picture Kiliowog's head being bigger but still looks great. I only fear the CG and live characters integrating. Where The Wild Things Are put them together perfectly. Cannot wait for this movie.
  • The_Kid
But that's because WTWTA had mostly practical design mixed with CGI faces. I know they are going to go CGI with this movie but I could also see them going practical, it worked for Hellboy 2.
  • Octoberist
they hired the dudes who did the make-up work in Star Trek to work on GL
  • Thats true. Hellboy was a good looking comic creature adaptation to real life. Tho the CG hellboy in that movie was a bit obvious, just to be picky.
  • brian
Awesome. As a DC fanboy, I'm really excited for this film. Green Lantern's universe is a colorful, expansive, fantastic vision, and I look forward to seeing it on the big screen.
  • Sinestro without a mustache is no Sinestro to me.

Kilowog and Tomar Re look okay.
  • riggs
    also because he's not purple
  • brian
Agreed. But you're ok, because it's not Sinestro. "And here’s Abin Sur and two images of Toma-Re:"
  • Oh... whoops, my bad. Totally misread that.

Sorry, I've been awake for over a day now, playing Mass Effect 2.
