New Airbender Banners and Trailer News

airbender_header

Throw what you want, it won’t stick anyway - I’m really looking forward to M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender. It seems to me that he’s got just the skills, story instincts and appropriate technical discipline to pull off a film of this type.

Yahoo have unveiled two banners for the film, one showcasing the fire nation and Dev Patel’s villainous prince Zuko, the other Noah Ringer as the air nation’s Aang, our hero. See them in full below the break.

Meanwhile, over on Twitter, the film’s producer Frank Marshall has today spilled a couple of details on the trailer, perhaps to assuage fears of a heavy air-vs-fire bias.

The AIRBENDER trailer will be about 2 minutes long…

The AIRBENDER trailer will feature all the main characters…

You know, I'm so glad the trailer is coming out.

For all of us who have been following the movie, we know we've heard mainly good things from set reports and how M.Night is approaching this.

Many have it against the actors and the director.

But I've always liked M.Nights work. While having 2 duds (in my book) he has also demonstrated his ability to make original stories that were good and that performed well in the BO.

He picked this specific series to adapt because he actually enjoyed the series and loved all the themes and characters from ATLAS.

It's always better for an adaptation to have a director who has an inspired vision rather than simply getting hired for the job at random.

Just two more weeks and we'll be getting a better sense of what M.Night has created/adapted.

Kinda looks like the Harry Potter Prisoner of Azkaban Poster.....
  • Osmoryslysk976
    LOL

Why didn't I think of that... I knew this poster somehow looked familiar....
    XD

It's going to be better than Cameron's Avatar. This one actually have a good story and characters.
  • I am a rele big fan of the Avatar n i cant wait for the movie 2 come. I'm sure M.Night Shyamalan ll get it just right. :D

I'm excited for this, but then again I literally grew up on the show, following every new episode as it aired. I don't think kids today really know anything about it, so very likely they'll see this and think it's not an adaptation of an excellent cartoon series, just another weird kung fu fantasy movie. This movie SHOULD have come out when the show was still popular. Back then, there were fan websites dedicated to predicting its finale. Either this is going to re-invigorate the franchise and become its own living breathing mythology like the series, or it'll be a piss poor attempt at capturing the show's greatness. AND I MEAN GREATNESS, not decent, not ok, but GREAT.
  • Osmoryslysk976
It will do the latter option
  • Nero
You "grew up on the show"? It premiered 5 years ago, not 20.
Also dude, the series ended in 2008. It's still very fresh in people's memories.
You're writing as if Avatar is a long-forgotten cartoon.

    Very weird post.

thanks for taking the thoughts out of my brain so i didnt have to type the same thing
  • please, buy the dvds and watch the series. its one of the best cartoon/anime ever. i can't wait to see this movie.
  • Please Night, redeem yourself. I'm begging you. I've never seen this series, but I'm very excited and hope that outside material and working in a world not created by him will be a good form of therapy for Shyamalan. He's too talented a director and writer to continue digressing like he did.

Jesus, Brendon, no one cares if you like Shymalan - just stick to what the news is about. It doesn't matter who directs this anyways, it's still going to butcher the wonderful series it's based on.
  • presto117
    jesus, calm the fuck down.
  • Osmoryslysk976
R u talking to Jesus like that?

    LOL XD
  • Rosario Lopez
Yeah because all the scenes we have seen as proved the movies gonna butcher the series. Lets wait for at least a real trailer before we say its gonna suck.
  • Red-Bird
I dunno.... Jim Henson (RIP ) could have pulled off an amazing flick. 'A;TLA' seems like it would have been right up his ally and have not only made some super-awesome SFX and dazzled us with his signature puppetry skills (imagine how he could have done Appa!) but likely would have cast actual Asian and Inuit actors.
  • Harmonica
    I sense a big flop.
  • Red-Bird
    Here, here.
  • Peter
Lets get something straight how can you sell this movie to older viewers with a asain kid as the lead....im not rascist or anything but anytime i see a asian guy play the lead i think of it 9 times out of 10 very comical and laugh half the movie.... i mean would you watch the last airbender if they had short round throwing fire and water at dev patel.
  • Osmoryslysk976
That's because that's how Hollywood has brainwashed you. If you look back at the western filming industry, you don't have to even go far to see that movies with Asian actors have them either as kung fu kicking bad asses(that's the only Asian hero that you can see in films ie. Jet Li), or some crazy sick villain ie. in Crank 2, the evil Asian geezer who to make it worse was some white guy in yellowface, and this film wasn't even a comedy, i found this so offensive although i was a fan of the original crank my interest pretty much died the instant i found out about this. I'm not even sure if i'll enjoy the first crank if i was to watch it again now. You'll also agree with me like what you said that one will most commonly see asian characters as random weirdos doing random stupid things ie you see that in Hot rod(the randomly dancing Chinese guy) and its a classic portrayal leading all the way to films like Breakfast and Tiffany's Mr. Yunioshi and Sixteen candles' Long Duk Dong. Its the kind of thing that has been going on for a long time, and for some fans of the series, TLA represented hope for them, it represented change, it was a chance to create portray some nice Asian characters that are not stereotyped but have decent roles. Sadly Paramount Pictures and people like you won't let that happen!!
  • "I'm not racist or anything..."

    You might wanna check again.
  • ERoBB
Yeah seriously....just because you say "I'm not racist" before saying something really racist, doesnt change anything.
  • The_Kid89
Loved the show, hope this comes out as cool as it looks.
  • this is the only modern cartoon i dont mind watching with my nephews, iv still got a small amount of faith in m night after the last couple of turds he's put out
  • ERoBB
I have hope because Shyamalan was always an underrated director. Say what you want about his writing, but his movies always looked good. Hell, even The Happening was good cinematography-wise.

So now that he's working with a rich and already thought out story, he has less of a chance of messing it up.
  • Osmoryslysk976
Yeah, you are right, except he already has messed it up. By ignoring important features of some characters like Sokka and Kitara who are both darker skinned and then whitewashing them, he has pretty much ruined his idea of diversity in the characters. The only diversity you will see is in the roles for the extras which have been ironically dumped on the 'other' races while the leading roles were specified to be 'Caucasian and other ethnics'.
This is by large the worst thing he could have done, this series will always carry an unpleasant dark cloud of Hollywood's latest whitewash.
Have you also noted how all the Asian calligraphy(I'm not sure whether its Chinese or another languages) has become extinct, something that was an important aspect of the series.
This is going to be (due to their lack of respect for the creators' hard work and research on the Asian cultures to produce such an awesome series) a big flop. I bet if they could they would have also got rid of the Asian architecture, perhaps they felt a bit lazy and let it go, the only thing that'll barely relate the film to the series is the martial arts, but with that the fight sequencing could go either way.
Every time I look at this film no matter how much i try to be excited about it i feel this unpleasant cloud over it. I honestly hope when the movie comes out it'll prove me wrong on the entertaining side of things at least, but i can't say it'll get rid of that unpleasant atmosphere surrounding it.
  • The posters look nice and I like them except for the sore thumb sticking out that says "In Theaters Summer 2010." Really? They couldn't just put it above the credits like other normal posters? Even opposite the characters would've looked better. The placement makes it awkward and I don't understand what they were going for with it.
  • En
It does somewhat look like they make a post to hold up the flags from the different nations as well as the movie title, kinda war-bannerish?
  • squeaks
wow... i'm a graphic designer, and they taught us NEVER to use text like that. it's too difficult to read. very awkward that they decided to do that.
  • kumar
u learn rules to break 'em. btw, is it so hard to read? or is it hard coz u learned from school that it is hard to read vertical text?
  • MickJ
Maybe, by making it hard to read, you have to actually work to read it ... and thus are more likely to remember what you read ... having worked so hard to read it ...? Maybe? ... no? Hm. Poor form then.
  • matt
They're mimicking asian top-to-bottom style of lettering/reading to go along with the asian feel of the story.
  • ERoBB
    Agreed 100%.
  • YoungZer0
Besides it makes it really difficult to read.
  • mcduck
    avatar sequel already???
  • ZarathustrA
That might have been funny if the film's poster or any part of the original write-up actually had the word Avatar in it, but then again it probably wouldn't have been.
  • mcducker
we'll never know for sure though, will we?
  • Dan
As long as it does justice to the spirit of the show and isnt just an FX - Fest I will be happy. Me and my son watch this show together and I think it teaches children quite valuable lessons (at times)
  • Bruce
And the movie will teach kids "only white people can be heroes".
  • ERoBB
    Is that what it'll teach?....
  • Ergo
Hollywood has been teaching that lesson for years. Why would The Last Airbender be any different?
  • YoungZer0
Jesus, here we go again. The casting is all right. All the character's (except Zuko maybe) have HUGE eyes. How can you say they are Asian? The world of Avatar is a mishmash of Asian Culture not Asian People. I can be white as a motherfucker and still speak Chinese.
  • You're going to need more than eyes to make that claim ;) Avatar's character designs were anime-inspired, and the large eyes thing goes all the way back to Japanese animators' love of Disney cartoons.
  • Red-Bird
And Asians DON'T have large eyes? They are as diverse as Caucasians in this regard. There are Asians with blue eyes and even Asians with naturally blond hair.

If you are going to build a world that is based on Asian mythology, culture, architecture and everything else in-between, wouldn't it make sense that the CHARACTERS be Asian, too?

Google 'The Face of the Other'. It's a explanation on why characters in anime come across as White, seeing as how Mike and Bryan, the shows creators, used anime-stylized features in the animated series.
  • "All the character's (except Zuko maybe) have HUGE eyes. How can you say they are Asian?"

thank god we have huge eyes to differentiate Asians with
  • theJOker
    你可以再说一遍,白人男孩。
  • Dylan
Exactly. Because Dev Patel isn't white and Zuko is a hero at the end.
  • Red-Bird
@Dylan, while it shows that Zuko has honor and basic compassion, he was, for all rights and purposes, STILL a villain.

What MATTERS, is that in the eyes of Aang, Sokka, Katara and the rest of the world, up until the middle of the third season, he was the VILLAIN. HE was the guy chasing the Avatar, the world's last hope. The implications this movie is making is that the brown 'villain' needs the White heroes help in seeing the light.
  • Dylan
@Red-Bird - Even in the first season Zuko is heroic at the end. *SPOILERS* He tries to save Zhao after Zhao tries to kill him.
