Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Edgar Wright’s big screen adaptation of the graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim vs. The World held a early test screening in Las Vegas tonight, and a few early reviews have hit the interwebs. Of course, it should be noted that these people did not see the finished version of the movie, but an early cut, without finished effects, which could very well turn out much different from the final cut. That said, the early reviews are very positive. Check out early thoughts from nine different people, after the jump.

Maria Von Crapp tells AICN: “I think the biggest takeaway for me from seeing Scott Pilgrim tonight is how much comedy comes from the visuals in it. Every scene is packed with on-screen graphics that add comic-book flourishes or explain what’s going on, cutaways that are for the most part really inventive and funny, or just over the top or out of the blue things that cause you to experience the film in a different way than you’re used to. While it’s not really like anything I’ve seen before, it’s like some mash-up of elements from Fight Club, Kill Bill, Speed Racer, Natural Born Killers and a Michael Cera movie (take your pick). As schizophrenic as that sounds, Edgar Wright found a way to shake all that up and come out with something original and fun and fundamental.” … “It’s kind of like a John Hughes movie smashed into The Matrix.” … “Like he did in his other movies, Edgar Wright really pushes the genre into whole new areas. This has to be the world’s first coming of age/romance/superhero/comic book adaptation/musical/comedy/whatever movie. It has some traces of things you’ve seen before but not blended together in this way.” Read the full review on AICN

Ewok1 tells SHH: “Pure 8-bit amazingness!” … “the movie is definitely a nerdgasm” … “it was a very well played out movie, pretty true to the actual comic series.” … “Michael Cera was a perfect cast for Scott Pilgrim, as well as the girl who played Knives Chau (Ellen Wong).” … “Overall the movie was excellent!!!” Read the full review on SHH

oatmeal on Neogaf: “Right off the bat, I knew I was going to love it. The Universal Logo was rendered in 8 bit with the Universal theme a MIDI version. Awesome. I knew I was again going to love it when the familiar opening from The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past (triforce spinning) cued the opening shot, a tilt down to an exterior of a house. Awesome. From there, it was a mixture of Edgar Wright’s usual frenetic camerawork with some unbelievably slick transitions, and while I knew nothing about the story behind the comics, I knew from the start it would be a fun ride.” … “we get to see just why Edgar Wright is, IMO, one of the most talented filmmakers out there. The fight scenes in this film are ludicrous. They are incredibly high energy, completely unique from one another, and a total riot.” … “I know it doesn’t come out until August 17th, but what they have right now (other than some rough audio patches and a lot of unfinished effects) is pretty damn remarkable. Edgar Wright has once again knocked it out of the park. I don’t know how commercial this film can be, due to it’s subject matter (it’s basically for nerds only, my wife liked it, but not nearly as much as I did), but Goddamnit it’s awesome.” Read the full review on Neogaf

  • 3.8 out of 5 stars? What a weird star system...

I was looking forward to seeing this movie but then someone with a movie ticket and a twitter account gave the movie 3.8 out 5 stars. That's 7.6 out of 10. That's like 76% good. And the person that says this has a twitter account! A TWITTER ACCOUNT!!!

Loved Brian Lee O'Malley's books, Love Edgar's films. Couldn't be happier with the quick reviews above. This and Kick-Ass are the big two movies I am dying to see in 2010.

I'm SOOOO psyched for this! I didn't know they had set an official release date (August 17)- I can't wait!
  • plagueoftruth
I've only read the first book of Scott Pilgrim and wasn't that impressed. I did enjoy the pop culture and videogame references (Knives Chau - Rated T for Teen) but felt the story was a bit flat. With that said: I would watch Edgar Wright direct drying paint and probably love it so I have hope for this.

Honestly, just hearing about the 8 bit Universal logo and the spinning triforce almost makes me go into geek convulsions. Video game references are a wonderful untapped resource for film.

I'm just waiting for the film that uses Nobuo Uematsu's 'One Winged Angel' from Final Fantasy VII to score an action scene in the same way Tarantino resuses Morricone scores. I'm surprised it hasn't happened already. 'Scott Pilgrim' could be the first. Just imagine Scott battling one of the evil ex-boyfriends to the same music as Cloud fighting Sephiroth. Epic.

I love the One Winged Angel bit and I completely agree. FF7 AC really wasn't that good, but the final fight scene set to that hardcore song made up for the parts I didn't care for.

Scott Pilgrim is unique. I liked it a lot more when I realized it was basically the Canadian version of FLCL. Random thought, I know... but for some reason I make the connection.

I liked the last 40 minutes of Advent Children. Pretty much as soon as Bahamut shows up until the end.

    What's FLCL?

A weird 6-episode anime that came out about a decade ago now. It was really just a springboard for a lot of weird ideas, and all the fight scenes were set to music by this one rock band. Also, the show did the whole Scott Pilgrim "weaving homages in with ordinary real life where none if really matters" stuff.

It's good to hear that skinny people can be funny.

Never thought I'd be excited for this film...
  • Zachy
I'm crying because I wish I had seen this man. This movie will totally kick some blockbuster ass. Sounds like Michael Cera is pickin up some new acting effort - considering his usual on-screen routine in not nearly as close to Scott Pilgrim's character. I'm interested to see how he pulled it off.
  • I kind of wish I hadn't read the bit about the 8-bit Universal logo. That's the kind of magnificent little touch I actually prefer to be surprised by.. even more so than plot details. This is some wonderful early buzz though, and it all seems to point in the right direction. You guys think that Scott Pilgrim and Kick-Ass (both more alternative comic book adaptations) may just yet give IM2 a run for its money, kind of like the first Iron Man flick came out of B-ranking herodom (as far as the general public was considered) and made such a huge splash..?

3.8/5 = 76% = C grade. So the film is average/mediocre??? Can Edgar do some extra credit homework? He needs to get at least a B or his mom is going to whip him silly and he will be grounded for a month! Come on, teacher, I want to be able to play with Edgar after school.
  • plagueoftruth
Although I laughed at the specificity of the 3.8/5, I don't think that letter grades and five star ratings work on the same scale. If a film gets a 3/5 star rating, I don't think that most critics are trying to say that it is a low D - almost an F.

I do see the comedy in your post, though.
  • reality
it's not hard plagueoftruth: the rating scale
    5-A
    4-B
    3-C
    2-D
    1-F
0- you failed as a director
  • Wickedrebel
    shit, when I was in school a 70% was a LOW D, with a 69% as a HIGH F.
  • leberdekciw
They had school in ancient Egypt?
  • Kensei
Still waiting for George Lucas to sue them for the obvious light saber homage via a flaming sword. It will probably be some prequel to the prequels trilogy or book that some how put a flaming sword as the first light saber!

But on subject can't wait to see this film, sounds awesome.
  • shoothamaguchi
Don't like the guy that said it was Nick and Norah mixed with Street Fighter. Both horrible films.
Can't wait for this film though, they really need to announce when it's coming out. The wait wouldn't be so hard if I knew when it was being released.
  • thatsheavydoc
    Pretend they were good movies.
That is what Scott Pilgrim will be.
  • Luis A
I'm pretty sure he wasn't referring to the Street Fighter Movie (any), but the actual game franchise.

I can't speak on behalf on Nick and Norah. I've never seen it. But the girl he is lusting after was on Entourage this past season, and I was not a fan.
  • Kensei
I put it sometime around Summer since it's getting good reviews from test screenings, would be nice to get dumped in around July but I am shooting for a May or August release.
  • I have no idea what this movie is about but i'm very excited about it! Is that ok? xD
  • shoothamaguchi
That's fine. Once you find out what it's about you're mind will be blown.
The books this is based on are insane. Part slacker comedy, part martial arts movie, part nintendo game, all parts awesome.
  • freemachine
    What? No Harry Knowles? [/sarcasm]
  • thatsheavydoc
Thank god. I appreciate hype, but I don't want Harry saying "SCOTT PILGRIM IS THE BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR SO FAR!! IT IS A CLASSIC FOR THE AGES!! I HAVE SEEN IT THREE TIMES!!" and making my expectations go stratosphericly higher than they should be.
