A warning to all actors: be very specific (if you can) when talking about potential projects. Over the weekend a few sites did the LA junket for Edge of Darkness, and one of the first questions to star Mel Gibson was, naturally, about his potential involvement in George Miller’s new Mad Max movie. When Gibson didn’t explicitly say that he would not make an appearance some wondered if the door was open for a cameo. Now the actor has been explicit in another interview, leaving no room for supposition. Gibson has also offered some details about his proposed Viking movie.

Speaking to Dark Horizons, Gibson says of the potential for a Mad Max cameo:

No, not at all. We’ve talked about it. We said – “Hey, how you doing.” You know, we’ve cleared it. It’s no biggie. No biggie. It’s his franchise. It’s his to do with as he wishes and I’m looking forward to seeing it. Good luck to him. I mean, I think he’s a genius. Everything he does, everything he turns his hand to, is somehow, extraordinary.

The much more interesting stuff coming out of the Edge of Darkness junket [via Collider and CHUD] was the fact that Gibson wants to shoot his Viking movie with some scenes in Old Norse, and that he’s been wanting to make a Viking movie since he was sixteen. The Viking film was, in fact, his “first thought about ever being a filmmaker.” At the time he was studying Old Norse (which is much like modern Icelandic), and wanted to make the film in that language. And he still does.

I think it’s going to be English - the English that would have been spoken back then - and Old Norse.  Whatever the 9th century had to offer.  I’m going to give you real.

I like that, but the language is just a part of his dream to create real, imposing Vikings on screen.

I want a Viking to scare you.  I don’t want a Viking to say, “I’m going to die with a sword in my hand.”  I don’t want to hear that.  It pulls the rug out from under you.  I want to see somebody who I have never seen before speaking low guttural German who scares the living shit out of me coming up to my house.  What is that like?  What would that have been like?

Knowing full well that Gibson doesn’t shy away from onscreen violence, he might actually scare the shit out of audiences with his Vikings. Glorious. (Also note that Old Norse would have been a northern Germanic language, so Gibson talking about someone speaking “low gutteral German” could be slightly mis-transcribed, or he could have been over-simplifying.)

So, Gibson will direct Pathfinder 2? Awesome.

But seriously, this Viking movie of his should better have Clancy Brown in one ax-wielding capacity or other. I shall accept no substitute.

Hope this movie receives more love than "Apocalypto" when it comes out. That movie was great but everyone was so focused in Mel's meltdown, that so many people missed Apocalypto in movie theaters.

Glad to see it's getting some love over time. Bring on the vikings, Mel!

No matter what other people may think of Mel Gibson, I'm still a huge fan of his. I'm really interested to see this Viking movie of his and I know it will be full of bloody violence that's for sure. As for him not being in the fourth Mad Max movie, well it sucks but as long as the movie is better then Thunderdome I'll be all for it.

For some reason, the title of this article is cracking me up.

Apocalypto iwas a brilliant film. Go Vikings!

What happened at the end of "Beyond Thinderdome" again? Is the new movie a continuation, or redux?
I liked Road Warrior the best, then the first one, lastly Beyond Thunderdome.

Mad Max won't be the same without Mel Gibson it would have added somthing even if it was only a cameo.
  • freemachine
No, it wouldn't. A cameo by Mel would have been too distracting and would have subtracted from the film. It would basically be "cinematic blue-balls".
  • Let me recommend a Viking movie: Richard Fleischer's "The Vikings" from 1958, starring Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Janet Leigh, and Ernest Borgnine. This was something of a landmark film because of the attention to period detail--they used accurate boats, armor, helmets, etc. They even used the correct type of horses: little fjord ponies. If you like classic movies, then check it out. Great score, too.
  • Should i be excited for this one!? hmmm...

should you be asking us? I don't care
  • A Viking Movie by Gibson? Count me in.

    Gibson rules.
The fact that he is self-financing this Viking epic is just a huge Thumbs Up for me! Leonardo can be a really good fit in this Viking film, Leo has become a really great actor of this generation. I see him as a White-Denzel where he can play a normal guy and even a hero.
  • freemachine
Does that make Denzel a Black-DiCaprio?
  • Steve_Kasan
Either one suits me. White-Denzel, Black-DiCaprio...all I know is that Gibson + Vikings = Epic.

I definitely agree with your last sentiment. Gibson is the man when it comes to pre-modern warfare.
  • Even despite being up for anything Gibson directs, this sounds damn interesting.

"(Also note that Old Norse would have been a northern Germanic language, so Gibson talking about someone speaking “low gutteral German” could be slightly mis-transcribed, or he could have been over-simplifying.)"

Obviously, "low gutteral" is describing how the character would be speaking, not the region the language comes from. Duh.
  • Reading comprehension FTL!
  • RussFischer
Obviously. I was referring to the use of the word 'German' rather than 'Germanic', and included the full phrase for clarity. Why would you possibly think anything else?
  • I can't wait to see this movie.

Mel have yet to disappoint me as a director, so I'm very interested in what he has to say about vikings.

I read a script about Vikings called Last Battle Dreamer a while back. It was incredible. It was written (and to be directed) by Menno Meyjes with Sean Bean attached to star. I hope it still happens as it was one of the best scripts I've ever read.

Either way, more Viking movies is always a good thing.

I've always enjoyed a good bloody mess that is created by Mel Gibson. Sure his movies are sometimes overwrought with overacting but they are fun nonetheless.

I'll bite - 'Apocalypto' was a pretty great achievement (...and think what Gibson could have done with the battle at Thermopylae!) but...with Leonardo DiCaprio? I REALLY don't know about that (...at the same time, Jim Caviezel was practically unrecognizable as Jesus, so, who knows...)

Mad Max without Mel isn't Mad Max. I don't know why Miller is even bothering.
  • I guess we're expected to consider it a reboot? But I agree. It won't be the same.
  • Jamieson
Its not a reboot if its number "4". Its definitely a sequel. They are probably going to make a stand alone movie. Like what they did with mad max 2. I love the franchise with a passion. So, whatever happens I'll love it, but I do hope the Me will reconsider.
  • A standalone film, yes - hence needing to considering it a reboot. Otherwise it's just painful. I'd be very surprised if they actually release it as 'MAD MAX 4'.
