Last we heard about a 3-D version of the Star Wars saga, George Lucas mentioned back in August 2008 that he had put LucasFilm to work on developing the technology to make it happen. At that point, he said that the technology worked great, but it wasn’t very practical. Now we have word that Lucas was wowed by Avatar’s 3-D tech, and that it may be just the push LucasFilm needed to adapt Star Wars.

This doesn’t mean that LucasFilm will lift Avatar’s tech directly, but they’ll likely get a few ideas for making their own tech more usable from James Cameron and crew’s many years of effort. (I’m sure this will all go down well with the Avatar haters.)

It was inevitable that Lucas would finally figure out a simple method to convert his cash cow franchise to 3-D. I had always figured that we’d see 3-D Star Wars sometime this next decade, and this news solidifies that timeline even further.

Honestly, it’s not the move to 3-D that worries me, it’s the potential for Lucas to go in and edit even more of the original trilogy. We could see edits that drastically change the tone of scenes like the infamous Han/Greedo shootout, or perhaps even another change like Hayden Christensen replacing Sebastian Shaw in Return of the Jedi. I’m just hoping that Lucas has grown tired of the constant re-edits.

As for the 3-D conversion itself, I actually have no problem with Lucas updating the series to utilize the latest theatrical technology. It’s a money-grab for sure given the higher ticket prices for 3-D theaters — but it’s an awesome money-grab. The only problem is that they’ll likely see the best results converting Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith since they were shot entirely digitally.

3-D probably won’t be the end of Star Wars theatrical re-releases either, but I suppose if there’s one film series that every generation needs to revisit in theaters, it’s this one.

Discuss: Would you watch the 3-D Star Wars releases? Are there any particular edits you’re worried about Lucas making?

i hope he edits JAR JAR out of it entirely
  • The only way I'll see this if Lucas does actually do some more editing. As in editing out all the crap that he added to the first 3 films. If he took out the stupidity of the last 3 prequels, he'd have one 10 minute film, and two one hour films... I don't think I'll EVER give that guy another dime.
  • DerVadder
Although 3D-conversion may have made significant leaps in recent years, it still depends on whether the movie in question was shot with 3D in mind, like Avatar.

If it isn't, the 3D is just a little gimmick in a few scenes, e.g. for 'A new Hope' the opening scene and the trench run, but the rest would still look cheap. Think 'The Final Destination'.

If it happens, and i'm sure it will as there is a lot of money in it for Lucas, they should use the 'special edition', because, just like Devindra mentioned, all the additions are already digital.

the only way i would care for another star wars is if it was episode 7 with retired baseball pitcher randy johnson starring as as kyle katarn and adrianne curry as han and leia's secret love kid. but lucas doesnt need actors now thanks to avatar all cg cast FTW
  • HJTHX1138
The Death Star Trench Run and the Death Star II battle in 3-D = ([:D. End of story.
I hope they convert the classic trilogy first. I can't stand another viewing of the prequels 3-D or not.
  • Lucas should just let the series lay low for 20 more years until another director decides to ruin the original trilogy by remaking them.
  • kman
I have a serious problem with Lucas going back and "re-editing" the original franchise and putting garbage like hack-ass actor Hayden Christensen into those original masterpieces! The main reason why the original trilogy is so refreshing to watch after the prequels is because you dont have to look at his whiney, faggot ass complaining about everything. Having said that, you can imagine my surprise when I saw the end of the DVD re-release of Return of the Jedi. I damn near shat myself. So god forbid George Lucas gets anymore "bright" ideas for the 3D release.
All I got to say is the Blu-Ray release of the original trilogy had better be a digital remaster of the Original release ONLY.... PERIOD. No edits, no special edition...just the original, the way it was released in 77, 80, and 83, only a hell of a lot sharper.

Other than that I dont give a rats ass what George Lucas does to drive that franchise further into the ground.

    Lucas's greed knows no bounds.....

I can get a headache watching Phantom menace without any help thanks.
  • GetSomeNewMaterial!!
NNOOOO NOMORE Star Wars! Put it to rest already!!
  • edog
I'm just curious as to how many ass-clowns would pay to watch The Phantom Menace suck right in front of their faces.
  • sanyo
Gimmicky money-grab. I'd only pay money to see the original theatrical releases in theaters, and maybe not even then. George Lucas already has enough of my money; fuck him.
  • zoey
    great.
a movie with avatars screenplay, dialog and characters has inspired george lucas to make another star wars movie.
  • Cineprog
What next will the be 3D conversion of indiana jones movies by george lucas I would not mind seeing the original star wars saga not botherd about phantom menace, attack of the clones, Revenge of the sith.
  • Nick
i met a guy 4 years ago, who was working on this project...
so its no surprise here, he was pretty eager at the time to tell me about it, but then again he was taking an intro to avid course to understand how the editing behind it would work a little bit i think.

Nice to see these are finally making the light of day
  • chase
    WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOUR FACE?
  • will this rerelease include the godawful "star wars christmas special'?

if so, it could be really scary. and i like scary.
  • Petefic
God why can't he just leave the films alone!
  • freemachine
If Lucas would only use his powers for good, rather than evil...
  • Yes, I would watch a 3D Star Wars original trilogy. That is entirely different than if I think it should be done in the first place (which it should not).
  • reign
if he is going to make it 3D after changing it once already he might as well change it MORE. It should just be a 3D special, leaving star wars the original untouched. It's hard to imagine him making a true to form 3D star wars, chances are he would never successfully pull it off and everyone will be pissy anyway. So he'd be better off changing it.
  • NO.
  • leia
We may disagree with some of the things Lucas does, but can all safely agree that he is a visionary.
  • Original_unaltered_SW_Fan
Visionary? I suppose he ould be counted as one .... for having One vision, which he has regurgitated, twisted, warped, raped and re-re-released ad nauseum. I think he's trying to get enough money together to build his own Death Star. We have to stop him by not paying any more money for Star Wars related tat.
  • papasanchez
Do the first three then no more. And for the love of little baby Jesus use the original cut!! None of this cg bullcrap that was thrown in later. Got it Lucas, GOT IT?! This is obviously a joke. I've seen the saga like, a million times and don't think 3d is gonna make it any better than the first time I watched it at 6 years of age.

Seriously, it's a terrible idea. They'll probably put it in IMAX as well.

Someone needs to take Lucas out! Someone needs to do it, now god dam it, NOW!!!
  • Han Solo ain't never had no sex with Princess Leia in a Star War.
  • sanyo
I love that movie, but that line bothers me so much. I think of the expanded universe and cringe.
  • Zig
I thought that this was a bad idea...

'Til I imagined the opening shot of Episode 4, in 3D. *drools*
  • evilninjax
Could George Lucas please do some new movies and move on from STAR WARS. Maybe if he was doing something else, he might actually find some creativity and thus be able to leave the original Star Wars alone.
  • Justin
He's finishing up Red Tails right now -- it's supposed to be out this year.
  • evilninjax
I meant directing. He's exec prod'd a ton of stuff over the years, but hasn't really directed that much.
  • Gahhhh. I've grown tired of the constant re-edits, and frankly I wish the man would just let his life be about something else from now on. Stop revisiting the past. It's grown incredibly annoying, George. And I'm having a hard time forgiving you for it.

So, basically, to answer your question....yes. Of course I would see Star Wars in 3D.

(The most annoying thing about Lucas's constant attempts to rehash the past for more money is they usually work.)
  • dagreenman18
A good idea in theory, but NO BAD LUCAS! GET AWAY FROM THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY! you fucked it enough.
  • The newest incarnation of syarwars will replace every ewok with crude photos of George lucas's ball sack. In 3-D!
  • JPX
I love it when idiots bash Lucas. This is the man who invented Star Wars and Indiana Jones. When you come up with something as iconic you can slam Lucas all you want - until then shut up and show some respect.
  • sanyo
So he's immune to criticism since we haven't made any movies? "You don't make movies so you don't get to tell me how to make movies!"?

I'm tired of this kind of bullshit logic.
  • Tetsuo_Man
Exactly. This is the internet.... we can say whatever we want here. That's the point *facepalm*...
  • Liam
    Amen.
  • Rumblefish
Just because invented the Star Wars universe doesn't give him carte blanche when it comes to the quality of his other projects. Now I'm sorry if I'm bashing your one true unrequited love, but SW1,2,+3 sucked, Indy 4 sucked, and any further tinkering with IV,V+VI will suck.
  • i appreciate what the man has done. he's created some masterpieces. what i dont appreciate is how he's raped them.

oh, and capawesome...... i shot beer out of my nose when i read your comment: "Moguls? Lucas is a fucking fat kid in a candy store with lots of money. All he does is jump on anything that can make that neck bubble of his bigger."

    its funny cause its true.
  • Rumblefish
I recently bought and watched the original, non-ass-raped trilogy on DVD. It's grainy, the sound is choppy in places, and there's only 5 storm troopers when Solo runs around the corner. But I absolutely loved it all the more because of it.
So go ahead Lucas, rape your films even more. Hell while you're at it, cut Alex Guiness from all 3 films, CGI all of Yoda's scenes, and replace all the storm troopers voices with that New Zealand bloke. I just don't care anymore.
  • odvan
It wouldn't be nowhere near Avatar or any other 3D movie which shooted for this format from the beginning.

    Bad idea.

But it will happened. Not only with SW but with many others movie. 3D became new big market, like VHS, DVD, digital process, Blu-Ray, HD panels, home theaters, etc.
  • crapola
I just saw the trailer to piranha 3d- crap crap crap... ,akes jaws 3 3d look like an oscar contender.
  • Liam
CGI and 3D the Zhan Trilogy and he MIGHT get my attention. Anything else, he can blow me.
  • wideawakewesley
Rather than converting the originals, which really is just a money grab. Can he just let someone else make a brand new movie set in the Star Wars Universe. Do that in 3D instead or at least do both!
  • mbellerbrock
That would be cool, Knights of the Old Republic, or episodes 7-9.
  • kay
I know you lose film cred for bashing the big GL and everything, but I don't give a shit what anyone thinks, but to see the first shot in A New Hope with the Star Destroyer flying overhead, the Darth Maul duel, fuckin' Mustafar duel in Revenge of the Sith, and the asteroid chase in Empire ALL in 3-D? I'm fuckin' there.
  • Its kind of sad to see Lucas still trying to hang on to the Star Wars films. Move on man! How many versions of these films do you want to release!?
  • mbellerbrock
It is very sad, and I even contributed to it by seeing Star Wars in Concert a month ago.... (hangs head in shame). If he released the originals in 3D I'd probably go see them. I've never seen 4-6 in theaters and I sure would love to.
  • yeah i agree...
  • keesvd
I'm really ashamed of this, but I've never seen a Star Wars film.. Ever... I would definitely check it out in the theatres, though, if it came to town in 3D. It probably won't here (Holland) because they didn't even show Toy Story in 3D here.
