We don’t really know much about Spike Jonze‘s next project, a short film titled I’m Here which is set to premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Funded by Absolut Vodka, the half-hour short film has been described as a “robot love story” and stars British actor Andrew Garfield (Boy A, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, The Social Network). When I learned tonight that Spike wanted to know if we would be interested in premiering the first official production photo from the film, I immediately responded, “did you even really have to ask?”
Spike shot this short during the Fall of 2009, and is still putting the final touches on it as we speak. From Spike, “For me the movie was getting back to working light” after Where The Wild Things Are, which was much more labor intensive. I’m Here marks Jonze’s third short film screened at the Sundance Film Festival. It will premiere on Thursday, January 21st at 8:30 pm at the Egyptian. It will play as part of a shorts program. After the jump you will see the full uncropped photo. You can even click on the image to get a high resolution look.

It seems like it was only earlier today that I was writing about George Miller and his Mad Max sequel… oh waitaminute, it was only… et cetera, et cetera.
According to (!) Jay Baruchel, Teresa Palmer has the prize part of “main chick” in Mad Max 4: Fury Road – so, move over Charlize, at least into the position of “not so main chick”. Baruchel was speaking to press at the Dreamworks PR launch of How to Train Your Dragon, which features vocal turns from both Baruchel and Palmer. The Herald Sun have the full story, though no further details on the Mad Max role are given.
Meanwhile, Movieline got the scoop that Miller has also cast Matt Damon and Brad Pitt. How’s that for some starpower? But hold your horses – he hasn’t cast them in the Mad Max sequel. Instead, he’s given them voice roles in his second Happy Feet picture. Movieline know nothing of the specifics – heck, the guys might not even be playing penguins for all they know- but they’ve already been recording for the film this week. I’m visualising… a narwhal and an arctic cod, what about you?

Casting news on Martin Campbell’s The Green Lantern continues to crystallize. While we had heard a rumor awhile back that Jackie Earle Haley might be in talks to play Green Lantern’s arch-nemesis, Sinestro, it now looks as though that isn’t, nor was it ever, the case.
MTV recently caught up with Campbell while during a junket for his upcoming thriller, Edge of Darkness, and popped the question to Campbell about Sinestro. According to Campbell:
No, that’s completely wrong…In fact, we’re in negotiations with Mark Strong to play Sinestro…He’s not only a wonderful actor, but he looks like Sinestro. If you look up old pictures of Sinestro, he’s very like him. The Jackie Earle Haley thing, somebody told me about it this morning; I had never heard it before in my life.

Now he’s had his webby tights ripped off, what might be next for Tobey Maguire? The answer, according to Steven Zeitchik’s synidcated article (see it at AZCentral, for example) might hinge on what kind of career Maguire is looking to mold. There’s a big-budget franchise-friendly path, and there’s a lower road of more ‘dramatic’ work, and in mapping these out, the article mentions a few possible pictures on both sides. My picks to follow after the break.

When Netflix partnered with the Starz network in October 2008 the deal was a serious coup. Through the deal with Starz, Netflix got access to a large library of streaming movies, and did so without having to negotiate digital rights with individual studios. Some of the Starz content is represented by old, low-quality pan and scan transfers (just try to stream The Terminator) but much of the content is quite good. If you’ve watched Wall-E streaming on Netflix it is thanks to the Starz deal.
Now Bloomberg is reporting on a possible change to the deal. We knew this would happen sooner or later: Disney is seeking to change the terms of the business it does with Starz.

According to a new post on Yahoo Movies, James Cameron‘s Battle Angel is already in pre-production for a 2011 release:
If the Avatar sequel does happen, it’ll be a few years before audiences can lay their 3D-glasses-enhanced eyes on it. Cameron is currently in pre-production on his next movie, Battle Angel in which he’ll use some of the same CG technology he created for Avatar. That film is slated to hit theaters in 2011.
They may have gotten the wrong end of the stick here… or maybe not. They’re not exactly a disreputable outlet but it’s just the kind of error that can easily happen.
