Movies have talent come and go all the time, but most of the movement happens way behind the scenes, often before a film is ever announced. Once the existence of a project is trumpeted to people outside of development, it’s pretty much set. A name might come or go, but there won’t be a huge amount of movement.

Not so with The Tourist, which since announcement has had a remarkable parade of stars and directors. I won’t run them all down again, because I’ve done it before (a couple of times), but things have changed once more. Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, director of the Oscar-winning The Lives of Others, is once again directing after having walked away back in November.

OK, I lied; I will run down some of the history again, but briefly. Donnersmarck came on board as the film was escalating in stature. Angelina Jolie took the role that originally belonged to Charlize Theron. But then Sam Worthington stepped out (he’d replaced Tom Cruise) and was rumored to be replaced by Johnny Depp, and von Donnersmarck walked away over ‘creative differences’. Alfonso Cuarón was rumored as the directorial replacement, but denied involvement.

Now EW is reporting that von Donnersmarck is back on board, and that the picture is indeed proceeding with Depp and Jolie in the lead roles.

So now we’re back, more or less, to where we were in November. The film remains a remake of a 2005 French film called Anthony Zimmer. The plot has been changed around as the film has gone through development, but EW says that Depp is “an American tourist lured into a nefarious plot of intrigue by a female Interpol agent (Jolie) as she attempts to locate a criminal.” Which, if accurrate, represents a change from the draft that was being worked on last year, in which Depp’s character was recruited by Interpol to “entrap a former lover who’s a suspected global criminal.”

Regardless: Depp + Jolie + Donnersmarck could be a hell of a lot of fun. Given that Tom Cruise bailed on this to do Knight and Day, the pictures now seem ironically similar. I’d much rather see this one.

I like Jolie ok, but really would have preferred Charlize Theron in the role. And, uh, yeah, von Donnersmarck should write the screenplay and, while he's at it, have total control of the whole project.

Clearly, if Jolie is a big box office draw, then angrybroomstick is not in the minority in looking forward to Salt. And the studios obviously recognize her drawing power since she's the highest paid actress now. Her awards and nominations speak for themselves. Her peers have recognized her for her work, as have the critics. There is no question that Jolie has become quite a polarizing figure with the relentless tabloid coverage. But that in itself is further proof of her popularity since her face on the cover obviously keeps selling magazines.
  • I quite like AJ, though I'll admit she can be quite annoying at times. I haven't seen all of The Changeling, but by the looks of it it's so incredibly not my type of movie that I refuse to watch it. I liked her in Girl, Interrupted, Playing by Heart, and Pushing Tin, and she was funny as hell in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Somehow I doubt she'll be a good match with Depp. They both have that same, brooding quality and I they'll look so hot on screen that the celluloid might melt, but he's a far better actor.

Jolie is a great underrated actress. Anyone who says she's not has not seen A Mighty Heart, Gia, George Wallace, Playing By Heart, Girl Interrupted, Gia, Changeling, and The Good Shepherd.

Yes, i have seen them all and all i can remember is kept asking myself why the hell they'd put her in that movie too? Either she's too good in playing one character her whole life or i'm blind, deaf and doomed.

can they please let von Donnersmarck rewrite the screenplay too while they're at it?

The original was very entertaining, but more "developing" could mean "disaster".

I don't understand how Jolie keeps getting work.

Does anyone out there actually rate her as an actor?

Jolie can be a good actress with the right material. Plus shes one of the few female stars in Hollywood who can pull off action and still be a box office draw.

I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed WANTED, but I'm not sure how much she had to do with that. The Tomb Raiders were painful and salt isn't on my radar.

You're right about the box office draw though. I can only think of Beckinsale and Jovovich as others who can do action - and even that's open for debate as far as how much money they can bring in.

I think Girl, Interrupted is probably one of best movies. I hope that you seen it, because imagine hearing people talking crap on DeNiro because he/she saw Meet the Fockers and haven't seen Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, etc.
  • Wow, you hate on Jolie, and I'm no fan of hers either, but then you go and say you enjoyed the crappiest movie of Bekmambetov's career. Further more she won it for Girl Interrupted I believe. Which I wouldn't say is her best work, I believe her best work was with Eastwood in Changeling. Of course fanboys always point to Hackers or even Cyborg 2. Both of those movies suck but I won't deny that when she takes a apart seriously she can act.

dogless, if you are not a big loser, sorry for you being stupid.

Wow, thanks for the constructive criticism, you who doesn't even have the balls to register.

Next time remember to tell me that I have no idea what I'm talking about.
  • um... she won an Oscar and was nominated for another Oscar. She is an amazing actress and I'm looking forward to her role in SALT and for this one.

    I don't understand YOUR comment.
  • dogless
I've never seen her in a role where she didn't make me cringe and I think you might be in the minority in regards to Salt. I don't think many people feel the need to see movies just because AJ is in it. I'd definitely like to hear otherwise if people disagree.

And didn't she win an Oscar for playing herself?
  • hey, it's your opinion and I ain't here to change your mind. I love Jolie and you hate Jolie, let's keep it at that, I ain't gonna lick your chest.
