Spider-Man 4 has been beset by rumor and delay of late, most of which seems to center around the villain for the piece. Director Sam Raimi reportedly hated the last script draft, and wants to hinge the film on classic bad guy the Vulture. Sony has been said to want any other character as the antagonist.

And in the midst of all this, John Malkovich was reportedly cast, or at least eyed for the Vulture. Now he’s told an Italian sports show (of all things) that he’s waiting for a new draft of the script, which would seem to suggest that he is on board in some capacity. At least for now.

Malkovich didn’t refer to his character by name, but as BadTaste.it reports, he said that filming has been delayed and he’s waiting for a new script, and hopes they’ll be shooting soon. Boilerplate stuff, sure, but that’s confirmation that he’s been involved up until this point. And while there was also the story that Anne Hathaway was mixed up in the film as a character called the Vulturess, remember that she’s apparently been nixed, and hopefully that character has gone away as well. But we don’t even know that for certain at the moment.

Malkovich has also stepped into the cast of Red, where he’ll replace John C. Reilly. Sad to see the latter go, but Malkovich keeps the cast’s high profile from sinkingĀ  — Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Mary Louise Parker, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfus and more is a hell of a cast for an adaptation of a comic book most people know nothing about. Willis plays a retired black-ops guy who comes out of retirement to face down a group of younger killers. Malkovich will be one of Willis’ contemporaries, a retired CIA agent “who is erratic and paranoid that everyone is out to kill him and joins Willis in is quest to find out who wants them dead,” says THR. The part is written as comedy.

  • James Cameron, here is your chance to show the world what your Spider Man would have been like.

According to Nikki Finke, the whole thing is being scrapped. Raimi, Maguire, Malkovich, and everyone else in the cast is out and the franchise is going to be rebooted, which is the best thing I've heard this year if it means Raimi is freed up to make a film of his own rather than another brain dead summer event movie.
  • Have to say, could care less about S4. Same old formula....who will the villain be this time!!! Enough already. I'm tired of sitting through another flick where they go through the 'how they became to be' BS.

It'd be nice if they spread a decent story over 2 films with the same villain which is what S3 should have started with Venom. Or even bring back Doc Oc from the 'dead'. I don't know. All I can say is this stuff gets pretty pointless after awhile.

Let's hope that the " suits " stay out of this and let the dirsctor do his work.................. sigh................

this whole mess is entirely Sony's fault. after the disaster that was "3" Raimi should've been fired on the spot. how he wasn't and continues to have any pull is nothing short of miraculous.

they've already got one foot in the grave.

Wait, if Sony is "entirely at fault" why should Raimi have been fired?

best idea i read on a bathroom wall somewhere involved Kraven the Hunter. He comes to New York for a massive safari. By day he is in a suit and is storming all over the town causing a big stir wherever he goes, by night he is injecting himself with super juice potion / DNA mixture to hunt the big animals. The RHINO, VERMIN, VULTURE, SCORPION, LIZARD!, BLACK CAT, OCTOPUS?, WEREWOLFBYNIGHT, and of course THE SPIDER. Open the movie with Pete battling the SHOCKER at a bank heist and the footage gets to Kraven. Tons of short cameos for side villains, great girl roles Black Cat, Kravens assistant, main villain to root against, tons of toy ideas with Kravens traps and different villains. your welcome Sony now get on it.

thank you, the only thing reason the studio wants a bunch of characters is so they can sell toys.

I think it would fit in to the series motif well if Peter were to become Man-Spider, perhaps in the same accident as Curt Connors. With a wedding deadline approaching.
  • Met John on the set of JONAH HEX and he is just plain awesome. Having him in any part will actually help the film. And I agree with raimi that maybe the best thing is to only have one villian this time. after spiderman 3, I think there were some good lessons of what not to do.

    I dig your work.

Instead of trying to make some grand, mini-epic, I think it would be cool to see Spiderman 4 be a sort of one-off. A self-contained, horror-type story featuring Kraven and Mobius would be excellent. While the Vulture is cool, i'd really like to get over the man-turned-villain (2 Goblins,Doc Ock, Sandman, "Venom") and see Spidey tackle the supernatural. If done without background and origins to weigh them, and the film, down, I think Raimi would nail a dark, intense, action-packed film with these villains.

Raimi and Sony disagreeing on villain choices? That always turns out well.

I remember reading an interview with Brian Michael Bendis (who may have botched the Marvel universe proper but at least made the awesome Ultimate Spider-Man) where he described how, during the making of the first movie, they asked some comic writers to pitch some line ideas and whatnot. He brought up how Spidey would undoubtedly make fun of the Goblin's attire. The response? One of the producers responded with the amount of money they put into the costume and looked, as Bendis described, "like I pooped on her shoe."

My point? The system of making a film is a delicate balance of director and studio. The last movie proved that the studio is in the wrong here. Kudos to Raimi, hope he wins this because they are in the wrong here as well (seriously, the best of the trilogy involved an octopus-themed villain...trust the guy).

    I think the Lizard should be in it and introduce Kraven The Hunter. BUT! If The Vulture HAS to be in it, John M. is the best to play him.... Let's do this right folks! :}
  • Travis McGee
Oh, and is it to much to ask that the film opens up to Peter's monologue (just like the previous 3 films) as he is fighting the Rhino who is attempting to rob a bank. The scene, if done right, would be quintessential Spider-Man.
  • And he QUIPS during the fight!
My god, that'd be the best thing. It's completely missing from the last movies.
  • drytoad1
    I agree...

This is what happens when a studio tries to force sequels as quick as they can before a good script is even finished! We saw it with Transformers also, where the studio sets a release date before they have even hired writers to pen a script...and "Revenge of the Fallen" sucked as a result, but the studio knew they would still make money so they didn't care. Christopher Nolan does it the right way, he doesn't let the studio dictate to him when he needs to put out another batman, until he has a great story in hand 1st!!!!
  • Travis McGee
Hold on just a minute, while I agree with you, I do have to say that Spider-Man 2 (the best film out of the 3) had a release date set before a script was complete and turned out to be one of the best superhero/comic book films ever.
  • mbellerbrock
I have to disagree, everyone seems to love 2 but I've always held the opinion that 1 is the best.
  • akucola
And while it wasn't a sequel, it appears much of what made Iron-man great was it's improvised style in a rush to meet a release date, too. It has much more to do with the minds involved than the time allotted to them.
  • mbellerbrock
It's true, Iron Man was a success despite what should have been expected. Hopefully it was due to the creativity of RDJ and Favreau and not all a mistake. We'll see this summer I guess.
  • Travis McGee
I really hope they take out "the Vultress."
