MTV Planning Dawn of the Dead Spin-Off TV Series

dawn_header

The last time George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead went out for a reworking, pretty much the entire blogosphere shared my skepticism. Luckily, once Zack Snyder’s remake finally came out, most of us were satisfied that while he hadn’t ousted the original from it’s Best Zombie Movie Ever pedestal, he’d actually served up a film well worth caring about and taking seriously. Snyder even received great acclaim for the opening movement of the picture, and I can honestly say that I really love those first ten minutes or so in particular. Some controversy remained, however, primarily over Snyder’s decision to have his undead be fast runners, seemingly ignoring all common sense about what kinds of stress and strain a rotting corpse could take.

Now, MTV are planning to create a spin-off TV series licensed from the Romero film. Will they be going for the fast or slow zombies?

According to Bloody Disgusting’s scoop, they’re going for a mix. The freshly dead can run and the more atrophied examples will shamble? There’s no indication, but it seems like a smart enough conceit.

In fact, there’s very little known about the project at all at the moment. Bloody Disgusting are promising to tell us more once this actually a done deal.

MTV have curiously made some big strides into the horror arena of late with an upcoming Teenwolf series and their recent My Super-Psycho Sweet 16, a Halloween special TV movie from Jacob Gentry, one of the directors of The Signal. I haven’t seen Super-Psycho, being in the UK where I don’t believe it has aired yet, but I definitely have it on my list and it did receive some surprisingly positive reviews. Could MTV have found their new niche? I’m certainly more interested in some horror programming than I am a bunch of faked-up reality shows about spoiled rich kids whining.

Hell I have an idea.....MTV go back to how you use to be. You are no longer Music Television anymore. Two or three hours of music videos don't cut it.

    Ah...
    I've been waiting for this.
There isn't enough horror television, and us geeks love zombies.
Although, I must say, I highly doubt that MTV will do it justice.
If this were a HBO series then I probably would be jumping with glee.
  • Loved the original Dawn of the Dead. Scary, and a great satire of conspicuous consumerism. The B-Movie special effects lend it a rather unique charm as well. As a stand alone piece I think it would be difficult to actually update this film with a TV series that would do the original justice. In my opinion.
  • Here's the deal, if it sucks, say it was Snyder's doing that inspired the series. If it's great, blame it on Romero.

By the way, I'm wondering exactly how this is going to go. I would like to see a show based on the Romero zombie universe but if they're going to do something with Dawn of the Dead, I'd like it to remain in the time frame of the original film.

Dammit. Get that teenage angst crap outta here.

I've been hearing about a television show spin-off based on any number of "Dead" titles for the longest time now. It's such a shame that it had to happen around this time, and on MTV no less. The only thing "good" thing about the premise, if it does happen, is that it's based on the original.

Also, I believe zombies were giant fad of the 00s. So... I take it that over the next few years, zombie movies (and those hipster douche zombie lovers) will be in the decline.

Bloody-Disgusting removed this story. Doesn't look like it was true.
  • Will we ever tire of zombies? They are a genre unto themselves now.

This almost matches my disgust for that "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" thing. It doesn't even seem like an actual person thought that up out of creative impulse. More like "Zombies are popular! I'll make something all the kids think is hip and get rich!".

So now when does 'Michael Myers the series' come out on MTV? LOL

one can only hope for jersey shore meets dawn of the dead remake...
thats some real situation right there.
  • WHY WHY WHY.. now a tv spin off of DOTD is a great idea but mtv? no.. if it was FX, AMC, HBO or SHO this would be amazing news.. mtv i seriously f'n hate you.. you ruin everything GRRRR
  • Dangeresquetoo
It's "Jersey Shore" meets "28 Days Later" meets "Flavor of Love".

It's a contests to see who can win the love of Snookie. Each week she eliminates one guy and sends him to become the feast of the undead until only one remains. Then they will repopulate the world with little juice heads and guidettes.
  • nick
i hope one of the guys punches her in the face.
    that would be epic.

Instead of a shot to the head, maybe a punch to the dome is the only way to stop a guidette zombie.

"This is the true story... of seven zombies... picked to be undead in a house...moan together and have their undeadness taped... to find out what happens... when people stop being polite... and start getting eaten...The Real World! Zombieland!"

I've kind of always wanted to see a zombie tv series but I think the major issue with this will be how far they will be willing to go from a violence stand point. The only zombie movies worth watching carry a hard R ratting and I'm not sure they will be able to translate that to basic cable.
  • Halew
You should watch "Dead Set". British zombie mini series. Blood and guts everywhere. Good Fun.

    Downloading it as we speak.

I agree, E4 did an amazing job on Dead Set, I loved the social commentary and the violence/gore was top notch. If AMC could do walking dead like Dead Set, staying faithful to the comic and characters I would die a happy man... and come back for more...
  • nervous_circuits
im holding out for the tv series based on The Walking Dead comics....if its still happening?

  • riggs
i seriously hope so, and i hope its coming to hbo or showtime.
  • nervous_circuits
AMC have acquired the rights apparently with Frank Darabont on board to write, direct and exec produce
  • Squint
That's something I'd be up for. Think HBO or Showtime could get away with more, but AMC is not a bad choice. Guess we'll have to wait to see if that comes to life.

LOL. I can just hear the opening sequence..."summertime, in the year of our lord, two thousand-and-ten "mad crazy shit went down, bro"; the virus hit the northeastern United States. First Boston than Everywhere. When it got to Jersey. I was takin' a Hangover nap. When I got outta bed, I found a new world, and a new me. A new Jersey. I am no longer Mike. I live in a house with six other people. They call me "the situation". This is our story.
