Confirmed: Zombieland Writers to Pen Deadpool

reynolds_deadpool

Last month is was rumored that Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were writing the script for the big screen comic book adaptation of Deadpool. The Hollywood Trades tonight confirm CHUD’s report, adding that Ryan Reynolds will indeed reprise his role as the wisecracking mercenary he portrayed in last year’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

20th Century Fox has no idea when the film would or could go into production. Reynolds is busy filming the DC Comics adaptation of Green Lantern, and won’t be available for another film until this Summer. If a script is complete, production could begin then. No director has yet been attached, and it’s very doubtful that Quentin Tarantino would consider the project, as much as Reynolds might want that to happen.

I’m a big fan of Reese and Wernick’s work on Zombieland. I don’t think people give enough credit to the clever and hilarious screenplay when talking about the success of that film. Also, their comedy style seems perfect for the Deadpool persona.

Check out Zombieland that movie is good

I like the sound of this. I loved Zombieland and I'm anxious to see what the writers can bring to the character Deadpool. I think they've got the dark sarcasm down.

    Zombieland was awesome!

    First rule of Deadpool? Cardio.

Didn't Deadpool die in the Wolverine movie?
  • moviefan
it does seem that pair is a perfect match for deadpool. i hope they do it right and fix issues fans had with the character in the wolverine film and all that. Hopefully it will happen. But probably will be awhile since nothing is set in stone just yet.

I dont get the hard feelings toward Reynolds here. In Green Lantern hes gonna be very much himself moreso than Deadpool. Hes gonna be wearing a ton of make-up for scarring and most likely be wearing a mask most of the time. His presence will be totally different.

Im more worried about green lantern than Deadpool. Ive always thought green lantern was pretty retarded, even though ive tried on multiple occasions to get into it. Ill be amazed to see what Martin Campbell can do to make THAT character interesting as opposed to being not surprised to see how Fox made Deadpool uninteresting.

    Makes sense to me

Zombieland was pure pulpy fun. I can see them definitely writing a great comic movie.

I have to question Reynolds playing two heroes so close together though. Seems really odd.

Sounds good enough. I'll be watching this...

Reese and Wernick could write a great Deadpool script, but there's no way I'm going to watch it with Reynolds in the lead role (ugh).

I'm intrigued. The thing I wonder about the most is how long 20th Century Fox will continue to have no idea about the project, and how badly they will hose it up once they get it.

    Zombieland = overrated.
  • Well, I'm very interested in this film. I never saw Origins or read the comics, so I'll be starting fresh. Reynolds and the Zombieland Writers have me salivating just a little. Now cast some attractive women, and I'll be set!
  • From what I hear, Fox is trying to make this movie like the character from the comics. Not sure how it's going to work as a reboot and if their going to completely ignore the version they had in Wolverine Origins. I just hope he doesn't have any other mutant powers in this version.
  • I believe both shuller donner and reynolds have said that DP will be based on the comics and not the wolvy movie.
  • I think they are about the best fit for this movie. The way the kid in Zombieland narrates whats going on would translate effortlessly to DP. The cadence is good and all they would need to do is have him address the audience... but there in lies the biggest problem with this production, making the DP dynamic of talking to the watcher clever and making it work.

I really have such high hopes for this and i hope this is more then some dumbed down super hero movie and they really take some chances with this movie and make it into the special thing it could and should be.
  • As long as they get Deadpool right as a character, I don't see this movie being a disaster. The majority of Deadpool's comic book stories are out of left field anyway. But the key to a good Deadpool story is how Deadpool himself is handled. He needs to be funny, he needs to have his multiple personalities, he needs to break the fourth wall, he needs to be unpredictable and he needs to be a surprisingly good strategist. For all his clumsiness and his aloof attitude, Deadpool gets shit done. Write him that way for the movie and all will fall into place.

Well hopefully Fox won't mess it up, I hate to see something with so much potential screwed up by a studio.

Word is still they want to rape Daredevil and Fantastic Four though.
  • It was that good they had to go back for seconds?
  • Craigasorusrex
You know I'm starting to think that Fox may be learning from mistakes of the past.

Ridley Scott for Alien prequel, Bryan Singer back to the X-Men franchise, and now this.

Hope this script doesn't go to waste with Fox picking a director unfit to helm this movie.

    But so far so good.
  • salezy
sry but FOX is gonna fuck this up :S
  • Given their record of suckiness, you're right. Although, it does sound like they're trying to right their wrongs by making this a reboot and make the character more like the comics. It's a start I guess.
  • salezy
i sure hope so you're right cause atm its a great combo reynolds+zombieland writers

This is good news. Now all we have to do is wait 30 years!
  • rockinrors
I really can't see this film being very good.
Maybe a 60 on rottentomatoes, but nothing higher than that.
And also, if Tarantino were to direct I would probably die of shock.
Thats almost as likely as Sam Mendes going to direct James Bond.
    Wait...
  • Somehow predicting the RT score for a movie who doesn't even have a director attached and probably won't be in theaters any sooner than 18-24 months from now really bothers me.
  • rockinrors
I'm just saying that the way things are sounding, to me the film won't do better than mixed reviews.
I'm just using rottentomatoes as an example, don't tell try and tell me that you haven't been passing judgement on Twilight 4, which has also yet to find a director, and will not be released for 18-24 months too.

How is what I am saying any different to 'salezy' below me expressing his judgement on how the film will go?
  • I see your point, and I don't disagree, it has a tough uphill battle. But salezy is providing us with an opinion that Fox won't handle this well *in his own eyes* (and maybe his fellow comic/movie aficionados' eyes). You seem to be giving us your own opinion on the aggregate opinions of 100-200+ critics. And with what little information there is on the movie I don't know how any educated guess could really be made on that score. It just seems vastly over presumptuous.
  • YoungZer0
Fits like a fist in the eye.
  • Kensei
Sounds great I just hope they get a good director now.
  • Any suggestions?
  • Bob
How about Shoot 'Em Up director Michael Davis?
  • Nickssfsn
Please God, no. I saw his Comic-Con presentation, it was great conceptually. So maybe get him for the story-boarding, but the actual film was an atrocity. I can't believe I dragged friends to see it.
