The real problem here isn't, necessarily, that the races of the series aren't really the races of Earth. I'll grant you that. The issue is that all the heroes are played by white actors, while the background people are ethnic Asians and Inuit. The other issue is that the villains are all POC.
So now we have a group of white heroes fighting a bunch of POC bad guys. That is a really crappy message to be sending, and I really thought that in the 21st Century we'd be past it. Guess not. Well, I won't be spending my money on it, and I'll urge my friends and family not to either.

i think the people that are saying that asians are more qualified or even assuming these characters are any race are just ignorant and want to stir up trouble...the races in this story are FIRE WATER EARTH AND AIR!!!!!!! NOT CHINESE JAPANESE TEBETAIN OR NATIVE AMERICAN! AND BY THE WAY SINCE WHEN DID NATIVE AMERICANS USE BOOMERANGS, THIS WHOLE THING PEOPLE ARE JUST ASUMING STUFF ABOUT THERE ETHNICITIES WHEN IT REALLY DOESNT MATTER! YOU COULD HAVE HAD ANY OF THE CHARACTERS IN THE SHOW BE ANY ETHNICITY IMAGINABLE AND STILL HAVE THE STORY INTACT BECAUSE THE CONCLUSION OF THE SHOW WAS THAT IT DOESNT MATTER WHERE YOU COME FORM BECAUSE WERE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!

gotta agree with you... but only until the 4th line. This isn't about race at all because these people aren't from the planet Earth and they aren't different races they are just Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. You can't place them in a certain race because this show isn't based on Earth. That's like saying "Avatar is racist. There aren't any black Na'vi" NO SHIT! Its cause you're on a different planet. You guys need to get over the whole "this casting is racist/ not racist" because race isn't an issue at all. They got cast based on who would do the best at the role first and what race/how much they look like the char. was much farther down on their list, and since Avatar: The Last Airbender has a great story and great writing, i would rather there be good actors giving a great performance than people who just look exactly like the cartoon cast......gosh...
ALL CAPPY ON YOUR ASSES
I AM WRITING IN ALL CAPS!!!!! OH NO!

Actually, Aang is white. And the water benders are Aleut. The fire nation are Asian. Either way, you're just spouting uninformed racist fanboy crap.

Aang Ain't White

As far as I'm concern his skin is very light and this kid looks very much like him. I think you can complain about Katara and Sokka not being the skin colour they should be, but for Aang you may be over exaggerating.
NoThanks
Aang always looked pretty white to me in the cartoons. Just because his cultural beliefs resembled Asian ones doesn't make him Asian. That's kind of racist, you know.
