New Image from Disney’s Rapunzel

Rapunzel

DisneyPixar.fr have a new photo from Disney Animation’s Rapunzel, scanned from French movie magazine Studio Cinelive. Check out the full uncropped image after the jump.

Directed by Byron Howard & Nathan Greno (the co-director and head of story on Bolt respectively), this new telling of the classic fairy tale, will transport audiences “to a stunning CG fantasy world complete with the iconic tower, an evil witch, a gallant hero and, of course, the mysterious girl with the long golden tresses. Expect adventure, heart, humor, and hair, lots of hair.”

Our lead heroine is voiced by Mandy Moore while Chuck’s Zachary Levi will play a “dashing bandit” named Flynn Ryder who hits the road with the “rebellious, teenage hair apparent.” The voice cast is also rumored to include David Schwimmer, Matthew Gary Gubler, Kristin Chenoweth, Dan Fogler, and Grey DeLisle.  is scheduled to hit theaters in Christmas 2010.

Previous director Glen Keane developed a new look for this computer animated film, which is said to look and feel more like a traditional hand-drawn Disney Classic, but in 3D. Apparently the film uses a non-photorealistic rendering technique which will make the surface look like it is painted but still containing depth and dimensions. The movie’s visual style is being based on French Rococo artist Jean-Honore Fragonard’s painting “The Swing”. You can definitely see the look they’re going for in the image above.

There are a couple more very small concept drawings over on the Animations message board, but you really can’t see much of anything. A short clip of test footage was shown at Siggraph 2005, where is gained a lot of attention. Earlier concept images had been previously posted online from when the project was titled Rapunzel Unbraided. But the project has since been completely revamped. You can see some concept art from the film here and here.

Rapunzel is scheduled to hit theaters in November 24th 2010.

Well I liked the Disney classics when I was a kid. I would watch the tapes over, and over... I'm pretty sure every kid in America did that back then. I was always hyped up because of the musical numbers in each of the movies they did back then... But now, when you see the Disney movie "The Princess and the frog"... the musical was very disappointing. The storyline was okay and predictable, but the musical numbers was a huge let down... compared to “Beauty and the Beast” song “Be our Guest” or songs from “Aladdin” like “A whole new world”. All the songs to those Disney classics were pretty well thought out… Love them, hate the ones that are coming out now.. I’ll probably hate this one too….

As for the graphics I wish they would make it a bit more colorful. Like in the animated movies created and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. This graphics for the props are incredible. His movies are a must see especially “Howl’s Moving Castle” And there dubbed by Disney… You think they would take the time and pick up a few pointers.
  • I think the face of "Mysterious Girl" could have been more cute

    thank u 4this

Guess that whole "we need a black Disney Princess to pander to the Obama demo" thing didn't exactly light up the box office, comparatively speaking.
  • By what the images of the movie Rapunzel looks it maybe worth seeing as a rental from Blockbuster than theater, of course might change my mind when i see the trailer for myself!
  • Sketch
If anything I'm looking forward to seeing the hair animation...
  • YoungZer0
Sorry i didn't really make myself clear. I'm not into Pixar or Disney Animation-films. Like Up, Incredibles and such. It's just a surprise that they take the classic story of Rapunzel instead of a new story.

    Hate the comment-system btw.

WOW!!!!! I know some of you don't care about this, but personally, I think this image is a watershed moment-- the first time a CG character follows the aesthetic principles of traditional cell animation.
When I first saw this, I was thinking: "No. It has to be concept art. It has to be concept art." Just look at the painterly aspect of it all, especially in Rapunzel's hair. It isn't photorealistic, and for once, it actually looks PLEASING to the eyes. Notice the silhouettes of both characters--- clearly influenced by classic cell animation. The poses are right on. It's what the old Disney artists called "Golden Poses." I have never seen anything so wonderful in CG! It absolutely knocks the pants off of Shrek, Pixar, and even Bolt. If the rest of the film looks this beautiful, I am completely sold.

Glen Keane? If you are reading this--- THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME IN TRYING TO MAKE THIS FILM WORK!

Disney is the only US company interested in designing animated BABES. When it comes to hot female characters pixar, dreamworks, bluesky, sony have not really done that.

Disney has given us Bell, Ariel, Pocahontas, Helga Sinclair, Kida, Meg, Jasmine, Esmeralda, Mulan, Chicha,

Ken I agree, this still is beautiful. I really like the delicate balance betwixt real and cartoon. Her real proportioned body to over sized head, hands and feet. I hope the riggers/skinners can keep that control on her dress. The fabric really looks as if it's being worn, not just a modeled dress. I see her hips almost more then the fabric. She's wearing the dress the dress isn't wearing her.

I also love the art on the wall. I would say the window slit is to small, I thought is was a florescent bulb at first. Yes the guy is not that special but I guess that's the point.

The older I get the more I appreciate the skill and time that goes into work like this. Sure you may not like it, not your thing, but don't say it's not a good work.

    Nice try, Glen Keane.

I don't get why everyone is being so negative about one fucking image. Yes, the princess and prince LOOK like the stereotypical fairy tale stock charcters, but why does that have to mean that the movie won't be original? After Princess and the Frog, I'm optimistc about any Disney animated project, even the non-pixar works. Lassater knows what he's doing

There are some fantasy/fairytale shots or pictures that click with me, fill me with glee and give me goosebumps or a quick moment when I have to catch my breath. LOTR was filled with them, and it's why I love world of warcraft.

This shot did it for me as well. The visual style seems to work wonderfully for a fairy tale. Can't wait.

The male lead btw looks the same as all the other animation male leads..... double sigh...........
  • The haircut, the goatee, the cheesy grin. Carbon copy, you're right.
  • and the princess looks the same as any other Disney princess.
  • drytoad1
Let's see.... a sassy female lead and a goofy male lead.............. sigh............
  • Guest
Sassy male goofy femalemust exist...it must.
  • FRH
ill bet this new render technique creates a trend in the CG animated film world- and i also bet that john lasseter is really stoked on it
  • krackajap
    Kinky.
  • starscream9289
That dude to the left reminds me of the main character from "El Dorado".
  • YazzyDream
Ha. I see it. He also reminds me of the Prince from Enchanted.
  • Hector N
I was thinking the same thing.

the character design seems pretty generic but I'll wait 'till we see a trailer to see how it looks.
  • Thrillhouse55
    Rule 34 on this?
  • YoungZer0
Of course, give it some time.
  • Exi
so he wants rule 34 on this, and you're going to make it? sickos.
  • Keeleon
It's called rule 35. It will happen, and there's nothing you can do about it. Like gravity.
  • YoungZer0
I'm not going to make anything. I'm just saying it will happen. It always does.
  • YoungZer0
Did i miss something? They make a Rapunzel Movie?
  • Loxley
Yep, Disney's non-Pixar 3D animation team is making it (the guys who did Bolt).

I'm actually really excited for the look of the film, I've been curious how Disney's classic style would look in full CG rendering.
  • YazzyDream
    Mad late.
  • YoungZer0
Perhaps it's because i was never into this whole animation thing.
  • Sketch
Then isn't it obvious you're going to be missing many things?
  • DJ Timelord
If only I could find a girl with long similar to that!!!
  • nicky
    awesome...can't wait for the movie!
  • Fahnon
Wow that's beautiful. A painting in motion...
  • Looks good aesthetically, but from the concept art I was expecting something more visually shocking. Maybe I just need to see this in action to see how the look really stands apart from, say, Bolt.
  • samboni
When i first saw it i thought it was a video game
  • Ricky
Did you try to play it?
  • J.D.
    Ha!
  • How boring.
  • John
    How is it boring?

Please explain then just leaving a worthless comment like that. Is it because there are no blue cat people in it..?
  • tim
Thank you John! This will be an instant Disney classic. I guarantee it will do better than the frog princess!
  • taptup
I guess he means Disney Animation should change the guys in charge of character design, because they don't have a lot of ideas.

I find ironic that they want to revive the hand-drawn style with the same designs that killed it years ago.
  • taptup
I know! But I identify those weak screenplays and lack of any magic with these same boring character designs that I remember since Tarzan and El Dorado (Dreamworks). If they wanted to start a new time with their movies, they'd better change the templates.
  • RickJM
Your comment makes no sense. Design didn't kill hand animated movies. It was a combination of the newness of computer designed animation and the fact that the stories just weren't that good.
  • exactly, the character design is so horribly cliched and boring. A white blonde blue eyed princess? check. a dashing handsome prince? check.

Why the F are they even doing this stupid, cliched, old fashioned story about females waiting for men to save them?? WTF??? It would have worked in the 1950s but not for today.
