Harold Ramis Promises Ghostbusters 3 For 2011

ghostbusters-cast-1

I propose a new policy for 2010: let’s not be even vaguely ready to buy into every little Ghostbusters 3 statement that passes the lips of Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd. Especially Dan Aykroyd. But the thing does seem to be happening, for better or worse, and while we’re lodged in the last days of 2009 I’ll stick with this year’s policy of delivering every shred of haphazard promise about the upcoming film. The latest is from Harold Ramis, who promises a summer 2010 shoot for a 2011 release.

The statements come from Heeb, which spoke to the director about many of his films, and got a couple neat statements about Groundhog Day. (Check the source for those.) Of Ghostbusters 3, he says:

Something’s going to happen. Dan [Aykroyd] did write a spec GB3 screenplay a few years ago, but no one was motivated to pursue it. Now, 25 years after the original, there seems to be some willingness to proceed and apparently a substantial public appetite for a sequel. We’ll introduce some new young Ghostbusters, and all the old guys will be in it, too. Think Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future … GB3 is progressing with plans to shoot next summer and release in 2011.

There’s enough detail floating around about the film by this point that I’m not as reluctant to believe those dates as I once might have been. (Then again, Aykroyd had hoped to be in production a couple months ago, which emphasizes that nothing is set until it’s actually happening.) There’s also no sense of what role Ramis will play beyond acting in the film and producing in some capacity. Given that GB3’s writers also wrote his last directorial effort, Year One, there was reason to suspect that he might direct this film, too. But Year One tanked, so that seems less likely now. With no director or cast officially announced, there’s no real basis for speculation at this point.

Meanwhile, that ‘Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future’ comment is interesting. Debate what that means in the comments.

If someone asks you if you're making Ghostbusters 3, you say YES!

"...They can honestly do no wrong with this movie and the main characters."

Just keep telling yourself that. It's not true, but maybe you can make yourself believe it. "There's no place like home <click, click, click>..., There's no place like home <There's no place like home <click, click, click>, ...." Time for a return to reality, Dorothy.

I'll say it again: If GB3 kills off Pete Venkman, movie makers' ears will be stinging from the wrath of angry fans for a long time to come. Example: Star Trek II, Wrath of Kahn. STIII is the result of fan opinion. In VII, ST killed off James T. Kirk. Shatner will never live that down, and has recently understood the weight of his foolish decision to sign on for that movie when he wanted a part in JJ Abrams' Trek, and he had nowhere to put him.
  • Perhaps this time around the black Ghostbuster will get some actual dialogue?
  • By you not acknowledging Winston, he won't get dialogue.

GB3 will be great. Even if the 4 of them shoot the shit in a boat for 2 hours it will be f'ing classic. They can honestly do no wrong with this movie and the main characters.

    Oscar will be a Ghostbuster.

Annie Pots will be a widow.

Slimer will have his own transit company.

I'm fine with a third if Ivan's son, Jason Reitman directs. Then we'll have an Oscar buzz Ghostbusters film.

another franchise that will skip its core audience for younger ones oblivious to the orginals despite numerous fails of this formula (SW prequels, startrek09, superman returns, DH4, Indy 4)
  • Deets Hanff
wait, if you boil it down Superman Returns is just a remake of Superman:The Movie. if anything he had the core audience too much in mind.

To me, the idea for this movie sounds just horrible. I hope I'll be wrong, but what has me hating it right at the very get-go is the prospect of Venkman (my favorite character, my niece's favorite character, has got to be the favorite among many as he is the most notorious character) being killed off. What a way to shoot yourself in the foot!
  • Good Lord I just hope they get it right.

I think it'll be great. I enjoyed playing their scripted and voiced gb game and it'd truly be fun to finally see the gbs back on screen again, possibly in 3D. The possibilities are UNLIMITLESS! tee hee.

I love Ghostbusters with all my being. It is such a special movie and I just hope and pray this is good. I can't help be excited for a new one. But if it sucks... I'll just cry. Right now it sounds like they are taking their time and working everything out and making sure it is good. Which is a good sign and they are supposedly doing a re-write of the script which after seeing "Year One" I think is a VERY good idea.

wish they'd just come out out and say what's taking so long to to get into development after all that Ramis, Akroyd, Murray, and even Ivan Reitman have been talking about this past year. last i remember, Ramis was waiting on Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky for the script, but nothing really developed after that.

whatever, as long as Michael Cera isn't one of the new ghostbusters (as once rumored), a third movie wouldn't be the worst thing
  • Like any movie in existence it's all about whether or not "they pull it off" and we won't know that until we're walking out of the theater after the midnight showing (if that even happens) with our heads hanging low or held up high and elated. To avoid the former, because I love Ghostbusters more than...Christ and his unexplained fabulous abs, I would prefer they do an Extreme Ghostbusters movie and not even touch on "the guys" being an integral role. Egon and Janine will have to be, but I'm ok with that. And cameo Venkman, Stantz, and Winston in the final bust. Watch EGB's last two ep's BACK IN THE SADDLE. You would think...that's what they're trying to do now, BUT, I highly doubt that's in their idea pool for this particular sequel. We have to step back and realize now that we've rallied for so long to get this movie made...it's created potential marketshare for Sony to fit in with the other blockbusters in supposedly reported 2011, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada.

I want it to be good. Who doesn't? I want Reitman directing and I feel "betrayed" (sort of) that other people (Gene and Lee) are penning the script. I'd rather Danny and Harold just write it...I'm sure they'll have their hands in there enough.

What I can say is this...they had a GB3 script. A great one! A lovely one!

And it became Ghostbusters: The Video Game. So, if you want the real GB3? The GB3 that should've been made and that was made in another medium? Pick up the game. It's a delight. You put that storyline on the big screen with perfect Venkmanized dialogue and match the chemistry of the original? Shit, I couldn't ask for more.

However, with whatever comes out, if it comes out...I'll have to to take it for what it is and just be glad to see proton streams flying across the screen once more remembering that the power of my voice on the internet is a gift and a curse.

    That is all.
  • This is purely incredible news. Anything by Ramis is comedy medicine. He's a man who knows how to tell a story AND make it funny as hell. Not too many of those out there.

I cant wait for things to be 100% official and production underway. It seem we are so close and i hope everything goes well.

I want to be in Ghostbusters III! Please Harold, pick me!!!
  • Ya know, I just saw Ramis at the Second City's 50th, and he was just funny as hell. But no Ghostbusters, as it wasn't the time.

But dig this: He said the scariest thing about movies for him is improvising with serious actors. Sepcifically, DeNiro scared the bejeesus outta Ramis on "Analyze This".
  • This sounds promising, the old Ghostbusters are essential part of the story, not just a little more than cameos.

It would be cool if Bill Murray was a ghost.

I wonder if this interview with Heeb is new or not. I know it's recently posted, but I remember him mentioning he did an interview with them at a Q&A during the release week of Year One.
  • John
    whats the point?
who want to see an old, overweight, bald ghostbuster like Aykroyd or Murray??
  • ERoBB
Murray and Ramis are funnier now than they've ever been.
  • FriedGold
    People that aren't shallow fucks.
  • That would be the best way to do the film, imo. It doesn't matter that they're old. Maybe they've all retired and new Ghostbusters have taken over their normal job, but some evil threat kills off some of the younger ones and they have to turn to the veterans. I'm not saying they should ride the "hey, i'm old" jokes too much (if at all) but it could add a certain level of humor.

I can just see the perfect teaser trailer now. A couple being terrorized by ghosts chasing them throughout the house, picture frames, lamps and other items flying all around them. The wife runs straight for the phone. "What on earth are you doing?" The husband yells. "What? Who are you gonna call?"

Cut to a scene of the street. Ghosts are everywhere, like the scene in the original movie. The camera pans back further and further along the street showing the chaos, until it finally reaches a lone figure.

Bill Murray in full Ghostbusters gear. He lets out a resigned sigh, rubbing the back of his sore neck.

Cut to the Ghostbusters logo and original theme song. Done.
  • John
Bill Murray in full Ghostbusters gear???

you really want to see an old Aykroyd and Murray strap on gear and try to be "hip" while fighting ghosts? they would have breathing problems chasing ghosts up stairs. maybe Murray's in a wheelchair with special gadgets? sounds like a really bad idea.
they are better off with a reboot. isnt that the thing to do nowadays? kids and young adults dont want to see 3 old guys chasing ghosts.
  • presto117
They never did anything really physical in the first 2 movies (or even the game where they were just virtual) so why not? hell, murray's character (enkman) had breathing problems walking up stairs in the first one! they're not really overweight (ramis... eh) either. and there's 4 ghostbusters.

    John, you're a doofus.
  • inteliboy
Mate you sound like an uninspired fat cat studio exec. There are plenty of films with young beautiful casts... and plenty of "reboots"... in fact sounds like 99% of hollywood films these days... Why the need to add Ghostbusters to that list??

And the Ghostbusters were NEVER hip. They were complete dorks. And that's the way it should be.
  • TotallyNotNick
I'm going to wait to see who these "young" ghostbusters are and who the director is before I decide my stance on this

    Oh wow, I laughed.
  • Restrained enthusiasm is all I can muster. Even if it happens, so much can go wrong. No one should plan on comparing this to the original 2.

Sofia Coppola's going to be in it.
