Given Avatar’s strong showing at the box office for the past few weekends, and that James Cameron and Fox have invested considerable amounts of blood and money in the film, you can rest assured that we’re going to get a sequel (and most likely a third film to complete the trilogy). The only question now is what those sequels will be about.

According to a recent LA Times Hero Complex interview, which occurred on Avatar’s opening night, Cameron is considering exploring the other moons surrounding the gas-giant planet Polyphemus, which Pandora orbits. This confirms an earlier rumor by Market Saw, and it gives us an idea about the increased scope of the Avatar universe.

Cameron’s quote, as well as a few other sequel bits, after the break. And of course, spoilers for the ending of Avatar as well.

In reference to the other moons around Polyphemus, Cameron said:

We have some story ideas about how to branch out into other moons of Polyphemus and the Alpha Centauri A (ACA) solar system.

This means we’ll be seeing further human exploration into that solar system, or perhaps even the newly Na’vi born Jake heading back into space with Neytiri in tow. I also would love to get a good luck at the destroyed Earth they keep referring to in the film.

Cameron also recently told ComingSoon how much Avatar was thought of as a possible franchise from the beginning:

Actually, when I pitched this to 20th Century Fox four-and-a-half years ago, I said, ‘You know, we’re going to spend a lot of money and time and energy creating not only a process but the assets, the CG assets, we call them - all the models of every rock and tree and plant and creature and the muscle rigs for all the creatures and the facial rigging for the main characters and all that’… huge, millions and millions of dollars. So it really makes sense to think of it as the potential start of a franchise, if you will, or a saga that plays out over several acts, each movie being an act of that saga.

He goes on to say that he’s mapped out what will happen in the sequels, although he hasn’t written any scripts yet.

In regards to actually producing the sequels, Cameron told MTV that he can definitely get them out faster than the first film:

Part of what we set out to do is create a world and create these characters. From the time we capture and finish the capture, it’s literally nine to 10 months to get the CG characters working, to get their facial musculature working. … So now we have Jake, we have Neytiri. Sam can step right back into it, the characters will fit them like a glove, and we’ll just go on. So a lot of the start-up torque that had to be done for one movie really makes more sense if you play it out across several films.

This is all assuming Cameron doesn’t want to make some grand changes to the underlying technology before the next films. Even considering something like that though, they’ll still be much better off production-wise the next time around.

We also recently ran some comments from producer Jon Landau on the sequel, in which he said, “After all, here we are exploring the surface of the planet Pandora. The interior remains to be seen.”

So not only are the moons a possibility, but also a further exploration into Pandora’s ecosystem. This honestly seems like the most obvious approach for the sequels, and I’m sure Cameron is dying to show us his meticulously constructed underwater Pandora environment.

Discuss: What would you like to see in an Avatar sequel? Should they spend more time off world, or give us more Pandora?

Many interesting options: Adam & Eve and their apple, my own idea is the threesome powers that gave colonists in America a mighty push ahead: Alcohol (or any other drug of choice), the old art of Rome - divide et impera - fomenting squabble among the locals and then handily elbowing in among the wreckage of the native rivalry, and imported diseases - measles, smallpox, mumps, whooping cough...

Being a fan not only of the movie Avatar, but also of the idea of placing a story around the Alpha Centauri star system, I would like to see more of the Pandora environment and a healthy dose of the other planets and moons around Centauri A. This is an amazing movie, the 3D adds to the effective telling of the story and being in the Centauri star system has endless possibilities for sequels. There is another whole star in that system (Centauri B) that is about the same distance to Cent-A as our sun (Sol) is to Neptune. It could have planets and moons as well. The story behind this movie is a sheer masterpiece, it's cool, with emotional content and also reminds us of our own responsibility to this planet. It's not a geeky self centered sci-fi as Star Wars was, and by the way, ALL of Star Wars pales in comparison to this epic. In my opinion, Avatar is the best Sci-Fi movie ever made. The possibility of reality also makes this movie hit home in the heart and mind. Apha Centuari isn't really all that far away (in terms of light years), it's like comparing the size of the sun and Centari A to a couple of beebees seperated by 50 miles. Man will ultimately reach that star system, if he loves himself enough to save his Mother!
  • It would be nice to see different races on Pandora and see how different they are from the Na'vi. Also after the humans were forced to leave Pandora they left the base there, also the scientists and probably some ships which gives the Na'vi some use of technology. So, they can put that to use in the sequel....

this movie is amazing, I've seen it three times and could go again. the action, the love story, the visuals, all were really moving and well done. sometimes there were lines the actors said that were really bad but the movie is just too great so I didn't even care about that aspect. Only part I found less entertaining was everytime Jake woke up and we saw the human part of the story, very boring to me. However, if there is a sequel that won't be a problem anymore, so IMO it can only get better since Jake will be a Na'vi 100% of the time. His real life acting is so-so but his CG/voice acting whatever you want to call it is truly awesome.

i think they should stay on pandora i think since theres 15 clan they could all go to war aginst each other but well just have to wait and see
  • Well I don't know about everybody else but the movie was amazing. They could have gone and completely had an full out war with no story line and it would still have been amazing. But it was a little disappointing halfway through the film it was like ok its getting a little boring. kinda reminded me of the second matrix but then it managed to capture me again and i wanna see it again it Was AMAZING for the second one i think it should go with more about Pandora and it connections with the rest of the universe.

Seems rather unlikely that the RDA is going to hang their heads in shame and leave their banished multi-trillion dollar mining operation be on Pandora. Obviously the RDA is going to make a push to reclaim their stakes so whatever squeal they create will have to address that. Might be a prime opportunity to visualize the dying Earth to some degree.

if you remember correctly however in AVATAR the Na'Vi took back pandora and forced the humans back into there ships with only a few select trusted to stay behind. Jake sulley and the other tribes had taken over the RDA and its operations and forced all back on what little remained of ther ships, or lest you forget they brought out the heavy guns due to that metal for brains general who was all for getting killed and trying to kick ass in the process, he caused all the heavy duty planes machines etc to be destroyed in his attempt to take all of pandora, when he took down the home tree and was free to mine all they needed while Jake was gather and bringing together the clans. So yes i think the humans lost in a big way, both in number, supplies, reinforcements, there entire base etc. so yeah they "sky people" were forced off the planet and with out anything but there tidbits and tails between there legs they would have to play it smart and run home, which will take 5 years to get back to earth and another 5 years just get back to pandora, so as a human you have to think smart there gonna go to were the easiest money is, not back to a failed multi billion dollar operation that in the long run will have to be restarted loosing even more money. I do give you props though it would make for a good movie on the humans POV to branch the movie off into a new possible series for them to go in search of better mining planets etc. but then again it would be the cliche human thing to do just like every other alien series has had happen, come out with a movie humans if they loose they just go in search of more planets to fuck up. I may be human but I hate how lazy humanity has gotten that it cant be satisfied with what it has, it just has to progress and progress just because, and the entire planet is effected. ow but heres what every person says, " o hell my big screen tv just isnt good anymore, well time to get a huge plasma flatscreen cus i can" shut the fuck up people and be happy learn to live without, thats why this country is so fucked up, lazy people dont want to do anything about it. the ones who do make films like AVATAR that portray the fact that humans arent the superior, they are inferior in fact because there dumb, and stupid enough to destroy an entirely perfect planet and in such ways kill themselves for a good time here and a good time there. Not one human on this god forsaken planet is careing about the future and the sons and daughters, sons and daughters (or there great great great grandkids) they just care about the "NOW" there is alot to learn from JAMES CAMERON and the NA'VI.

I agree with you on humanity and think perhaps one of the many overtly subtle (oxymoron I know) is humanity's ability to be but lack of disposition to be benevolent.

Here's how I think an RDA counter-strike would work and why:

The lost most of their military hardware and their base on Pandora true. However RDA has 10 ISVs (the big ship you see in the first of the movie) according to Cameron's Wikia on the movie. With the near-future technology used on the movie, quantum networking could easily allow the banished Selfridge to send a message back to Earth with news of the events. RDA, and even the government might send troops/hardware on the next ISV heading that way. They did speak to the capabilities they had in orbit already (orbital photos of the massing Na'vi clans). It wouldn't really require a stretch to see a counter assault show up on the Na'vi's doorstep with a much more focused and prepared force with more power weapons (up to and including WMDs as they speak to their ability to harness matter/antimatter energy; nuclear strike isn't outside the realm of reason). Maybe Cameron uses this response as an opportunity to introduce Earth as a dying planet torn by war. So the RDA responds, but again not wanting bad press, negotiates with a now clan leader jake Sulley to reclaim their mining operation including mining the unobtainium under the dead Hometree. In return, the RDA gives the Na'vi X or Y in addition to the implementation of Pandora ecology-friendly mining processes. From there, you can launch into any number of storylines.

I've read of hints of them exploring the interior or oceans of Pandora and underground mining, rather than strip/pit mining, would be a great way to kick off that storyline. I've also read about the possibility of a spacefaring Jake and Neytiri (reading further, a technologically more savvy Na'vi) and that could also make for a great story line that gets to Cameron's hints of exploring other moons. Or perhaps a newly defeated Na'vi are relocated to another moon. So many possibilities really. I'd love to write the sequel. ;)

well in any case i do get where you are coming from however you have to keep the heart of the story, the meaning. he wasnt trying to portray a war in this movie he was portraying Pandora, PANDORA is alive and part of the Na'vi, there connected at one with each other, thats why the memories and souls and all of the connections they showed in AVATAR were portrayed the way they were. The anteni like structures that protrude from there hair are not just what they use to ride the horses or the banshees, thats there sole connection to the planet, they use themselves to speak with the spirits and learn of the past, if humans just go in there and mine and kill shit like we always do because we are to eager to get our greedy little hands on what we want, then that would be like a race of overly destructive aliens coming to our earth and destroying our history and such (ergo. BATTLEFIELD EARTH) if you have seen that movie the aliens wiped out the history and after hundreds of years the planet was mined to nothingness forgotten cities and dessert wastelands, and humanity reverted back to its primal stages. the Na'vi are in tune with the planet, what james cameron was portraying wasnt just as simple as, o look jake sulley destined to be a hero of the species of pandora, and helping defeat the warcrazed humans of mining the planet because money issues ergo destroying history and deleating certain pasts and connections with the na'vi 's homeworld. The idea of this movie was to show that the na'vi are the ones who know the planet who protect and nurture the planet and in return in takes care of them, it was portraying the humans as the aliens coming to take and destroy pandora like they did earth. It may be all about humans to some people but in reality this movie delves deeper it portrays even our own human history, with the english and the native americans. In the movies there is always a hero to win the battle, in real life there is no hero, there is no one to stand up and realize what is being done. This movie truthfully states what could happen in the future if there is some life outside our own solar system, it states a very real scenario that this planet can get tapped dry and once it is whats going to happen, scientists are already going to other planets and finding metals we use and have used here on earth for years now, is it in any way impossible to say that once each planet we visit is tapped out of resources that we will just keep moving till and entire solar system is destroyed. this movie asks questions and tells its backround, why do you think so many millions became instantly attracted to this movie, the HERO complex for one sure, but it also delves very clearly into our own past, It may portray it as way more beautiful then our own past but it does say something from which i think every person needs to stop and realize. why are we so comfortable to knockdown another mans door put our feet up on his table recline on his sofa then ask for a beer and watch a game on his tv? is it because we can, or is it because we dont give a rats ass what that other man thinks because were the ones with the gun? Im not one of those people who see a movie and go, o that was cool, ther is gonna be lots of killing in the next one. I am a type who sees meaning in what the producer is trying to say. And if you think that way it means not that your neccasarily are smart but that you are a deep thinker, someone who very well could be a leader somone who isnt just everyone else thinking it was just a cool movie to watch for all the action, someone who follows his own ideals and concepts. I HAVE A QUESTION FOR ALL WHO READ THIS, AND IT IS, WOULD IT BE SO BAD TO RELAPSE BACK INTO A MORE PRIMORDIAL, PRE TECHNOLOGICAL SOCIETY? WOULD IT BE SO BAD TO STOP USING CLUNKS OF METAL THAT PRODUCE 70 TONS OF CARBON MONOXIDE GAS IN LIKE 5 YEARS FROM WHICH YOU TRAVEL INTO A CITY AND CAN NOT SEE TOPS OF BUILDING LET ALONE THE FIRST 10 STORIES OF SKYSCRAPERS WHEN YOU GO TO WORK IN THE MORNING? WOULD IT BE SO BAD TO BE IN A SOCIETY BUILT ON ETHICS, MORALITY, GROUP LEADERSHIP, AND LABOR RICH INSTINCTS? Think about it in a society to this day in the rainforest, tribes etc. you have the hunters, you have people who take care of the young, the chieftans and you have the tribe working together in a group to get to common goals. However in the american society you have every person working independantly fucking over stabbing other people in the back killing people over survival, in tribes even in africa one of the worst places of tribe wars, they never kill unless there is absolute need, when there is some law or code against the tribe that is broken. and the simplicity of it all actually makes less stressful lively hoods in which every person gets his role. Humans just over took this world so fast had nothing to stop them no rules or codex to really go by and now every person is "dog eat dog" and for themselves. look at the na'vi every tribe on the planet ended up following jake and called each and every na'vi ther brother or sister, like a family. So in short humans, like in the movie get to be called DEMONS. destroyer of worlds. less complicated lives would be the result of less of a less complicated society, and in turn more trust, intune, and beneficial relations would be made. Humans are just to ignorant to delve that deep into thought though. So i waste my words. and Ranting is my specialty.

I think that the next avatar should delve further into the pandoran lifestyle, exploration of this pandora, you have this huge planet to explore in which one section "the setting of AVATAR" has only been seen, you saw in the movie how many tribes were on Pandora alone, you have the moons sure but you have the whole planet of PANDORA still to be seen. the setting of AVATAR is more or less like the rainforest of the real world, you still have the OCEANS, the rest of PANDORA and the moons. Im looking forward to something along the lines of JAKE and NEYTIRI becoming the leaders of the clan, and exploring the rest of PANDORA for a new KELUTREL (hometree) there needs to be a story about the rising the resettlement of the clan, and new challenges that may or may not be human, keep in mind it would take the humans another 10years to travel back to earth gain reinfocements and come all the way back to PANDORA. So with that I think there needs to be another alien race, another challenge in which Jake gets to be the hero or maybe HIS SON. I would love to speak with the directors to give son of my ideas, all my life ive been around actors in highschool, playwriters and such but have never felt the inspiration that AVATAR has installed. I think AVATAR could be the best film since the ALIEN series or STAR TREK which were both very influencial, and both had extreamly good actors such as Segorney Weiver in them. If only the dreams came true, but like Jake says theres a time when all of us need to wake up. We cant all become an Avatar and save a race of indiginous NA'VI, who are brilliantly created.
  • I loved the film and believe that the scrpit was excelent. The point of the film was not the dialogue, thats what most of you are forgetting, the point of the film was Pandora its self, also when Ney'tiri defends Jakesully against those small dog like creatures she hiss's (or something) and it reminds me of a cat. The Nav'vi are more intune with the wild and the planet pandora and so the do not need to speak as much, plus to have them speak in english all the time would make the film unrealistic compared to the final product that it is now. But thats my opinion anyway.

I dont really give where the film is situated as long as Jakesully and Ney'tiri are still in it! :)

Wow, reading some of these posts,,, I dont konw. After somw much garbage that has come out these last few years it was refreshing to see something that wasnt a hack n slash blood smeared sex fest, or a sinceless shootem up. I myself am a hard core treky and Starwars geek, The newest star trek sucked ass, Spock as a tempermentel brat, and kirk was a jack ass class A and what the hell was Scottys bed buddy thing. All in all that movie sucked. The visuals alone mad Lucas,s stuff look very old school. Toby ma what ever , as spiderman left much to be desired, the whole spiderman franchise leave s much to be desired. I think the problem some are having with Avatar, is that it does touch a colective soul in us were we do know about slavery and the distruction of "Savages" so instead of enjoying the movie like thousands have a fdew have to shout crap about it not having a good script of its to visual. It was a fantastic movie and a great start of a new franchise. I just hope that it doesnt d0 what others have done and crap out in it sequals,, such as Spiderman Hackformers, the marine, most no plot shootemups all explosion and no real acting.

Don't try and go over-the-top with new worlds, just explore more of Pandora -- it was the most gripping part of the film.

BBC's Planet Pandora, narrated by David Attenborough.

    Dear Mr. Cameron,
Next time, give us a better story.
  • jvasquez33
Yea im sure when its all said and done that the movie will have generated enough money to go ahead and go with the sequel. There is already tons of talk on about the sequel and what plots its could possibly follow on tons of blogs/sites/forums. But knowing James Cameron and his ability to do what he does best, im sure brew up something incredibly awesome once again. Definitely another must see that is for sure.

The James Cameron forums are loaded with talks about Avatar 2, and some pretty interesting plots and different scenarios as well. Even wrote my own plot to what I would want Avatar 2 to be on there, enjoy.

I'm a huge Cameron fan and would definitely love a sequel as I adore this first film, but I also have concerns. First being, the majority of the hype other than Cameron fans just wanting to see more Cameron is what was Avatar going to look like. The mystery...mystique of not only the CGI, but what characters were involved and what the world looked like. Quite possibly the biggest one being the cinematic experience. Keep in mind until the first official photo of Jake's Avatar in the amino tank or the Comic Con footage, no one had a clue what Avatar was going to look like. I just don't know if a sequel can generate the oomph it needs. This is only concern for the outcome of the sequel at the box office. But at the same time, all the stuff I've mentioned could make the film even more of a success, now that people know what it is they think it's cool and want to go see it even more. Who knows right? As others have said...it's hard to imagine anything topping the experience and perfection of Avatar that we've seen. On the other hand, Cameron has yet to provide us with anything other than topping the rest and making it better and better.
Just something to ponder on for a while.

In Avatar 2, James Cameron's Na'vi avatar and documentary film crew will take audiences on a wonderous (and educational!) deep sea adventure into to the oceans of Pandora.
  • Transformers 2 was AWESOME and if all your little minds can't comprehend that then your all idiots and i'm seeing Avatar today
  • gorlak
I want to see Jake defend against the next wave of human deployment on Pandora. There is no way that mankind is just going to give up and go home after the events of Avatar.

    * How can the Na'Vi utilize the global biological network to defend against mankind?
    * How can the Na'Vi benefit from a modern perspective via Jake and what would a new symbiosis involving technology look like?
  • Black_x_Star
    I can't wait!

    "You're not on Pandora anymore."
  • Deets Hanff
I would like to see Jake go back to earth as a Navi. Sure the Navi look great in a CG backdrop, but to they look good on a real backdrop made of of real air, trees, soil and natural lighting.
Once the Navi are on Earth they can team up with the water creatures from the Abyss and start Rock band called "Go Green" with captain planet as the Front man.
  • YoungZer0
Would be more interested in seeing Planet Earth. Pandora and it's inhabitants were boring.
  • daveed
What I'd like to see in an Avatar sequel? No more Sam Worthington. Bring Sigourney's character back to life. Cameron can figure out a script work-around for that.
  • Can't wait to see more adventures of the Na'vi ... zzzzz

At least it keeps Cameron from making a "True Lies 2"
  • GabeJa
Cameron has a pretty darn good track record when it comes to sequals. Excited for this.
  • I would also like to see more of Earth
  • AlexTamayo
I think it would be cool to see a more technological Na'vi, since now they are working more with some of the humans. But of course, without damaging they're planet like humans.

I don't know why but I would have love to see Giovanni Ribisi's character killed. I seriously got to dislike that guy. Parker, right?
  • You are so right
The best part of the Avatar hating situation is that most of you haters were probably the same haters before the movie came out.

Then the movie comes out and you pay a hefty price to see it, and you still hate it, which is fine, but in the end Cameron and FOX still win, as they made you pay for a movie that you "hated" to begin with.

    Tasty isn't it.
  • Joe
So you're saying that I willingly spent $14 on an IMAX 3D ticket and drove 30 minutes to see the film because I wanted to hate it, and not because I had been told repeatedly for months by fanboys like you that it would be a "gamechanger" and a "new classic"?

And you're telling me I hated it because I went in with an open slate of expectations and found the whole thing lacking substance outside of the special effects?

Sure, buddy. People can't dislike the things you like, that just doesn't make sense!
  • Will
No, he's saying that a lot of "haters" (like you probably) already had their minds set up to "hate" the movie, to "dislike it" even after you saw it, but you ended up paying to see it anyways, which is the final objective, to have people pay to see the movie, which you did. It doesn't matter if you blast it to end of times, you could've stay home and save your 14 bucks and still hate it, you paid for it and saw it, that's the bottom line.
  • yes please
  • HiThere144
(Minor Spoilers ahead) I think a sequel should address the 400-pound gorilla in the room - the prospect of immortality introduced in the 1st film. You can't expect the people of earth or the new inhabitants of Pandora to go long ignoring the fact that Pandora's ecosystem presents the possibility of a fountain of youth...in fact, the ability to put one's consciousness in a new body, from a plot logistics standpoint, could serve to keep the humans from basically returning with an armada and decimating the planet's surface from orbit, as the planetary network pervades the ecosystem. Seems to me to be a welcome invitation to do a fountain of youth/fall from paradise story. You could do an eden/apple story where the introduction of humanity to the planet with the new Na'vi bodies creates conflict with the "borrowed energy - you have to return it" way of life...because, obviously, you don't have to return it. Logistically, the avatar tanks, the scientists, the ecosystem and the shamans are still around, so...give wasshername a disease and force Jake to choose between harmony with nature and saving his wife. Create a fallen angel character out of either a human scientist or one of Jake's offspring. Corrupt Aiwa, and set up a quest to remove said corruption...there are a million different plot tangents you could explore, with thematic elements thousands of years old. With good writing, we could get a true classic using the first film as a basis.
  • Will
Interesting, the same corporation who is mining Pandora for unobtanium could find out about the Pandoran ability to organically transfer conciousness between bodies and set up some sort of business deal and exploit this by selling this "service" (a la Total Recall) to rich people back on earth, and then use and exploit the Na'vi and thier beliefs and dieties, etc. but with grave results and the end.

    Very interesting point.
  • I have a high hope for the sequal being better than the first one because now Jame Cameron has this technology already built,he will have more time to create more interesting story. Avatar is my favorite movie of the year but I don't think the overall story was the strongest part of the movie.

And Devindra, I don' t mean to annoy you but minor typo on the post. The last sentence of the paragraph that follows right after cameron's first quote. Luck should be look. Thanks!!
  • Avatar was the best film i have seen in a long time. i hope the sequal will be just as good. i'm already excited about it
  • You are so right
The Star Trek script was terrible as well. You are just Trekkie groupies. JJ was just able to craft something marvellous out of a bad script. He went on record saying he wasn't happy with it. So let's not compare apples to oranges.

Why do people always need to comment on one film by saying "....so and so was so much better", who cares, they are different movies.

    Bye.
  • shane
I had never watched more than a few minutes of Star Trek (any series) before seeing the movie this year. And I loved it. Explaining a reboot of the series WITHIN the story is pretty much genius. USB Ponytails...not so much.
  • I don't know what makes the script terrible. I enjoyed the dialogues from avatar. It was really catchy and memorable and represent the characters really well in direct way. And the pacing of the movie was very nice in my opinion.
  • You are so right
WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT LONG FIRST-PERSON CHASE SCENE IN AVATAR, WASN'T IT SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE 12 MINUTES LONG?

    DID I MISS IT?
  • wiseguy
In Cameron I trust. I'm sure which ever way he decides to go will be great.
I can't say enough about this film, I thought it was awesome in every level, but I am a big fantasy sci/fiy enthusiast
I do think that exploring a new eco-system would be cool though.
Not really interested in seeing earth either

  • AlexTamayo
That is so 2009. 2025 will have the brand new 5D, which you can smell and touch.

I said 2025 because you have to remember that Cameron needs to store the story for 15 years so it can catch up with technology, which in this case would be the new 5D. We'll receive gloves and something to put in our noses. j/k
  • PizpotGargravarr
    Bring on the smellovision*.

*I'm aware that smell isn't a dimension, I just wanted to say smellovision.
