The first teaser for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland left me scratching my head a little. That may have partly down to incomplete effects, but some of it was down to the unexpected aesthetic. By the time the next trailers rolled around, however, the images and I were ready to meet in the middle.

After the break are a series of big, big pictures that showcase the White Rabbit, the March Hare, the Dormouse and the Cheshire Cat, and a smaller one of the Caterpillar. Looking at these new hi-res images of itchy critters, I’m properly on side with the picture. There’s a richness to the images, and a consistency.

Burton’s tastes are evolving slowly, I think. I see similarities between this film and the sea-side fantasies in Sweeney Todd, likely influenced in part by Dariusz Wolski, Burton’s cinematographer on just these two films. There’s a crushed and textured, desaturated style here that nicely complements his career-long love of stark contrasts and emo-inspiring gothic detailing.

So here we see the White Rabbit, who will be voiced by Michael Sheen; the March Hare, who will be voiced by Paul Whitehouse; the Dormouse, who will be voiced by Barbara Windsor; the Cheshire Cat, who will be voiced by Stephen Fry; and the Caterpillar, who will be voiced by Alan Rickman. That’s an amazing voice cast, and yet another reason I’m getting good vibes here.

The Caterpillar image came from a Facebook page that promotes the film, the other images are Wallpapers released by Disney.

Finally, here’s a look at them all sitting down to tea in an image that comes from JoBlo.

At least at the moment, the only ‘character designer’ credited on this film’s IMDB page to have other films named on their resume is Michael Kutsche. His two other gigs are named as Thor and John Carter of Mars.

I dunno, it seems like a lot of people are shooting it before they even have a clear target. I guess his last few films have let some people down. Personally I liked Burton's stuff when he was tackling new subject matter like Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice. I truly hope the end film doesn't carry the PS look people are mentioning. Adverts are one thing, but final look is something else.
  • Just because the "daughter" of Dahl's respects his work, doesn't make it any more reputable or Desirable to SOME...

I know I prefer the Original MOVIE...

If you don't make sense, then allow others to express their own opinion, because yours alone is NOT the Ultimate in TRUTH, it is YOURS alone...

So what if Someone else "liked" it too?

Does that make his opinion "invalid"?

No, I think not...Mr. Burton, I've stopped watching his movies since "Corpse Bride"...Did not want to watch Sweeney Todd...I actually think he's LOST Some of his Sweet-Natured, NaturaL-Charm he had 4 his characters or in his characters...Ed Wood & Edward Scissorhands comes to mind...So much "Humanity" Within those two movies and characters...Perhaps, he needs to associate with characters named "ED" ha...

I agree, the VFX in the trailer look like they were created in Photoshop and animated into a movie. Not exciting to watch. But who knows how it will end up. Just wish Burton would go easy on the CGI. The reason why we loved his old films is because the effects were so old-school and classic. They were invisible. This is not invisible. Sleepy Hollow is a good example of his use of invisible CGI. POTA was not so bad. Everything after is just bad and worse. Even Sweeney Todd was photo-shoppy in parts.

Was it necessary for Helena Bonham's head as the Queen of Hearts to be permanently warped into an Apple PhotoBooth effect?

I think what we all miss is the dark, early 90's meets early 50's look he was famous for. The big stripes. The creepy claymation. But people move on, I guess. It IS 2010 after all.

He used to be such a great film maker. Before he and Depp started fucking. Not excited for this even a little bit. There are other actors in Hollywood, maybe he should work with some of them.

Have you seen Edward Scissorhands? Burton directed it and Depp starred in it. I'm not sure if you're aware, but it's a fantastic movie, so clearly 'he and Depp [fucking]' as you so uncouthly put it does not make a difference in the quality of the film.

Pushing Daisies utilized vibrant colors very well (the most recent example i can remember). But unlike that show, Alice in Wonderland's color palette seems to be all over the place just like in Charlie and the chocolate factory making it a complete acid trip.
  • Solid
I hope it's better than that shitty chocolate factory movie. What the hell happened with that? I was rolling with it for a while then it stalled and sputtered and then some bullshit part came up with young willy wonka, then I just kind of tuned out. Awful burton. Make this one good please. And by good, I mean like Avatar.

Tim Burton's Chocolate Factory was amazing, wake up...even Dahl's daughter who didn't approve of the original said she loved what Burton did with her father's book in an interview on the dvd.
  • Look, u wanka bar, U need to Wake up & Realize NOT Everyone FEELS the Same way you do, and u don't need to DIMINISH nor DiSMISS other people's opinions and feelings on ANY given SUBJECT, just because it Does NOT CoaLESCE with your World View or Subjective Opinions, capische?

cirenzsong, I like THE way YOU make some WORDS in all BOLD, you're SO witty. UH oh, I"M judging YOU. Maybe IF YOU had a girlfriend you wouldn't BE so ANGRY. I like HOW YOU had to reply to me TWICE, did i hit a nerve?
  • Plus you don't need to Justify your Opinions with any "evidence" just to make yourself feel better about how you feeL, Know thyself, and don't judge other people for FEELING how they Wanna FEEL, does that Make Sense?
  • TotallyNotNick
I agree with mikle. I really want to get on board with this but something about this whole project just seems...off. I almost wanna say it doesn't look weird enough. The last trailer almost made it look like another Narnia movie.
  • seahan
From the trailer and these photos alone I've decided I'll just go ahead and give my quick capsule review in advance: Burton fucks up again with another failed film adaptation of a children's book.
  • wonka bar
I may have to agree with you seahan on this movie, but Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was great...even Dahl's daughter liked it better than the original which didn't respect the book. John Augusts additional material of adding his dad as the dentist and his childhood was great.
  • Ash
Dahl himself hated Gene Wilder's version - too many changes. I would have liked to know what he would have thought about Burton's.
  • i wanna see this movie but i cant help but think the whole style looks like bad photoshop. look at the cats left elbow on the dining table for instance. i guess now that i've seen avatar...
  • isa<3
are u stupid or what that movie is good it is better than the old
  • snowmigod
I agree that it's shoddy work, but you really can't equate what the movie is going to look like from a poster.. The people who do the posters most likely have almost nothing to do with the production other than some random graphic design and had it thrown to them last minute. I could be wrong, but this film will not be full of errors of that nature. I can assure you.
