cop-out-trailer-1

This week, there will be no news, only trailers! Kevin Smith has always written his own movies, until now. When he signed on to direct A Couple of Dicks, for Warner Bros., eventually retitled Cop Out, the project was an interesting move, if nothing else. Could Smith work purely as a director for hire and channel the energy of Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan into something that might resemble a film he’d make on his own? The just-released trailer isn’t making much of an argument for ‘yes’. Check it out after the break.

This is one unfunny trailer. The “smarter than Batman” line got a giggle, and…yeah. That’s about it. Though not generally a fan of Smith’s I liked Zack and Miri and was hoping this might end up being a turning point for the director.

But what I see here looks like a bad in-character 30 Rock sketch where Tracy Jordan is allowed to go way overboard and run roughshod over everything. Willis looks mostly disengaged and Morgan is mugging like he took acting lessons from Jackie Chan. I really hope the final film is a lot better than this implies. If not, it could be ideal double-feature material with Hollywood Homicide. (Now I need to track down the A Couple of Dicks script and see how much of this was on the page.)

If anything, this could be a visual step forward for Smith. He’s joked before about the fact that his films are pretty flat, and this certainly looks more like a studio movie. But it had a studio backing, so that’s not a serious surprise. And really, I’d rather have the material work well than see some gloss.

What isn’t highlighted here? The fact that Kevin Smith directed. The trailer opens by jokingly invoking the names of “acclaimed police dramas” like Dirty Harry, Training Day and The Departed, and uses music and image to suggest echoes of The Dark Knight. Not until the small credit cards at the end do we see Smith’s name, and then it flies by pretty quick.

That is the most discussing, not funny movie I ever went to. Cannot believe B. Willis would lower himself to do a movie like this. I left before it was over.

did anyone notice that when they are in the car they arnt moving
  • San Francisco
Just saw commercial for this. It starts with a city scene, skyscrapers, but says when there is a crime in New York, it's showing San Francisco, flipped backwards. But the Transamerica Pyramid bldg and US Bank building plain to see.
    Looks stupid to me.

  • John D. McCoy
It looks like a good time. I just want to smile again. I didn't laugh once in Avatar.

    Score by Harold Faltemeyer, motherfuckers
  • LostTurntable
Don't have much of an opinion on the film either way with this trailer, I have the feeling that most of the jokes will be R-rated. However, it gets major points of using "Sound of da Police."

People bitch because they can. They think it's cool only to like Clerks and Mallrats, and think its cool to hate his later work because it's mainstream and selling out. Like every director doesn't want to make MONEY - you know, the thing that pays for food and rent. Get over yourselves. If the movie makes you laugh, it makes you laugh. Who CARES if it doesn't look like Clerks. Sorry, Kevin Smith has actual money to work with. Many directors don't want to make movies that look like Mallrats. They do it because that's the only way. And if a well known, legit director does make a low budget movie, its because they already make good money. They can 'experiment' and go low budget. That's viewed as "art." God, some movie fans are really a joke.

To be fair, Tracy Morgan is pretty much the same as his 30 Rock character. His appearances on Late Night are the weirdest I've ever seen.
  • i didnt laugh throughout... but will still check it out b/c of Smith
  • Phil
Terrible trailer. I was hoping this would look good, since I haven't enjoyed a Kevin Smith movie since Dogma.
  • Trey
I'LL SHOOT YOU RIGHT IN THE FACE!

haha I like Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis so I'm in. Trailers can be misleading and I'm hoping this is one of those casses.
  • whatTHEfuckhappened2kevinsmith
to be honest, that looked pretty fucking bad
  • ERoBB
    lol, I laughed.

But something that bothers me...I just KNEW Bruce would be wearing short sleeved button ups. Whats the deal, why do movie cops dress like retired Floridian seniors?
  • DC
Also, it figures that the only Smith movie that the studios will back is the (possibly) worst one. Says a lot about the studio system huh?
  • Rick_Dickulous
What were you expecting? You don't hire Morgan for a subtle performance. Anyways it looks good to me, the stuff with Scott looked like it could be amazing.
  • I am a huge Kevin Smith fan, but I'll just say this, I wathed the trailer and was already annoyed with Tracy Morgan, in which may make me stay away from this movie.
  • jim
Looks funny enough, like a throwback to 48 hours type movies. Should be a fun popcorn movie.
  • martin
Hm, this is so weird. I didnt laugh a single time during the trailer and I usually like Kevin Smiths stuff. But this seems just craptastic.
  • OK... I love, love, love, love, LOVE Kevin Smith movies. I even make apologies for Jersey Girl (gasp!).

...but this looks like crap. I'm hoping against hope this is just an insanely poor cut trailer.
  • johnnysix
I just think it's great to see that all the smoking hasn't had an impact on Kevin's career /s

No way is this movie going to be R. That's the trailer of a PG-13 flick all the way.
  • And who said this was going to be rated R people? Knowing studio intervention it can easily be PG-13. And what is the plot of this film anyways?
  • sideshowRaheem
Um, the director said it was going to be rated R. WB had thoughts of making it a PG-13 flick but Kevin Smith, Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis all agreed to take less money if they could make it rated R.

I hate it when they replace the F-word with "Freaking".

    I HATE IT!
  • What do I know.
Kevin didn't cut this trailer, marketing does, said so on his twitter. You guys just agree with whoever writes the article. good job.
  • Mark Paul G.
If Kevin Smith's name wasn't mentioned, NOBODY here would approve one iota. Anyone who thinks otherwise is blinded by their love of Smith.
  • jason b
ever since that lame ass dmx dance scene from zack & miri, smith has taken nothing but steps backwards - just my opinion.

i love willis, and tina fey has proven that tracy morgan can be funny in pg-13-ville, but this didn't make me laugh once. i'm a smith fan, so this really disapointed me.
  • DC
How the hell does Tracy Morgan keep getting work? There isnt a funny bone in his body. He is the worst part of everything hes involved in.
  • That is exactly what I want to know. I love 30 Rock with an unhealthy passion but Morgan is the low point of the show, every time. Anything he does could be a hundred times funnier if there was an actor in the role with some real talent.

Does anyone really find this guy funny? His success is a real mystery to me.
  • ???

Am I the only one who thinks the ONLY funny moments in this trailer are from T. Morgan. He may not be everyones cup of tea but I think the guy has a ton of natural talent that elevates whatever material he is given.
  • DC
Hes so over the top. And when I say over the top, I mean he climbed the mountain, went over the top, kept going, and climbed another fuckin mountain. I just dont get why people find that kind of thing funny. He sucked on SNL, he sucked on 30 Rock, now hes sucking it up in a movie from a director I like. Way to go Tracy. You have successfully infiltrated every bit of comedy I like and ruined each of them.
  • I just don't see it. I think Russ described it pretty well when he said, "...and Morgan is mugging like he took acting lessons from Jackie Chan." To me that pretty much describes Morgan's whole career.
  • jason b
this trailer was god awful, but i gotta disagree with you - the work he & fey do on 30 rock is brilliant.
  • freemachine
It's like Brett Ratner shoved his fist up Kevin Smith's ass and turned him into a sock-puppet director.
  • That was awful. Real bad. The use of KRS was the only enjoyable part. I'm sure the RB trailer will include tons of dick jokes and appeal to 15 year old boys. Pass.
  • Mark Paul G.
That looks terrible. Seriously, how are the comments not unanimous?
  • cosign
  • I laughed heartily. I don't get what everyone's complaining about. I'm looking forward to this one.
  • Wow that was so not like a Kevin Smith movie. I honestly don't know what to think.
  • Steve
Agreed. It didn't feel anything like a Kevin Smith movie at all. I doubt the RB trailer will change that. It might turn out to be kind of ok, but not quite what I was hoping for.
  • babyjaypan
This movie shoulda been named "Cop Movie"
  • The_Kid89
I also believe that a red-band trailer for this is going to be way better because wasn't what I was expecting from this movie.
  • the situation
    I hate all of you

    p.s. that looks kinda funny
  • starscream9289
    But this is /Film, man!

    Nothing but love!
  • TotallyNotNick
That last bit made me laugh out loud, everything else was meh. I agree with everyone about the red-band trailer, I'll wait until than to offically take an opinion.
  • cufford
Looks like another stupid, cliche, string-of-punch-lines movie.

Can't anyone but Cameron do something original anymore?
  • jason b
you should check out the recent films by jim jarmusch, chris nolan, pt anderson, darren aranofsky, david cronenberg, kathryn bigelow, spike jonze, - just to name a few currently working and far more original directors than james cameron.

if you found anything other than the FX in avatar 'original'...then i think we are using different definitions of the word.
  • AssholeMovieFan
Cameron Original? Because using sound effects from Jurassic Park and Star Wars, using the design of the mechs from Matrix Revolutions, and basically ripping most of the meat and potatoes from that one guys book is really original. Let alone the story itself of an outsider who isn't like that of the others comes in to become the savior has never been done before.../sarcasm.
  • cufford
Well, apparently you're not using the same definition as this and all other entertainment blogs who have been hyping the fact that Avatar is the one "original" film that's had such a huge opening. They can't stop using the word "original" in fact, when referring to Avatar.

As for me, I haven't seen Avatar. I was referring to his wider body of work.

I can tell that you just don't like Cameron for some reason, even if he is widely considered one of the best directors of all time.
