Hawkman Movie Next For Warner Bros?

hawkman_header

Are you a fan of DC comics’ Hawkman? I don’t know how much success the character has actually had. I’ve carried out a quick straw poll of my non-geek associates and none of them actually knew who he was and two of them thought I was talking about Condorman, the Disney movie with Michael Crawford.

If Warners and DC follow through with plans for a freshly-rumored Hawkman movie that low profile will be bound to change, courtesy of multi-million dollar marketing budgets.

Of course, the studios are pretty much past the immediately recognizable Spider-Man, Batman and Superman types and deep into the second-tier sorts like Iron Man, Elektra and Green Lantern and still having a certain amount of success. Hawkman is as likely to succeed, or for that matter fail, as any of them - with an attractive cast and good advance word of mouth, they could get an Iron Man size return, with unappealing actors and some dodgy looking trailers and posters, they’ll likely get an Elektra.

One of the key decisions will be just which version of Hawkman they decide to bring to the screen because the options seem quite varied.

Wikipedia offers a series of fictional character histories, ranging from Carter Hall, the current Hawkman, through Katar Hol, the Hawkman that I’ve read a little of, and on to Grant Morrison’s Zauriel, an attempt to reinvent the character in the 90s. I’d guess that Carter Hall would be the variant they’d go for, tying in to current comics continuity. Here’s his little bio:

In the days of ancient Egypt, Prince Khufu is engaged in a feud with his rival, the Egyptian priest Hath-Set. The priest eventually captures both Khufu and his consort Chay-Ara, and kills them. Millennia later, in 1940, Khufu is reincarnated as American archaeologist Carter Hall, and Chay-Ara as Shiera Saunders.

Using the properties of “Nth metal” to craft a gravity-defying belt, Hall creates wings and a costume to become the first Hawkman.

A lot of gaps in that string of events, but it matches nicely with the story at Pajiba which dished up the rumor to start with. They’re telling us:

Warners… describes the movie as part Indiana Jones, part Da Vinci Code and part Ghost.

Okay, nothing really matches nicely with the ‘part Ghost‘ bit, does it? Intriguing.

There’s a live action Hawkman about to hit screens in the special Justice Society episode of Smallville. When that goes out on January 29th it could be the beginning of the public’s modern romance with the character but I really would have thought that DC could rustle up a character who doesn’t take quite so much suspension of disbelief (why’s he wearing a big fake beak, mommy?) to take up to the big leagues first.

  • I still want the Aquaman movie. Then maybe people will appreciate the level of shit shoveled at us as superhero films on a regular basis. Suddenly Fantastic 4 2: The Wettening doesn't seem as bad, does it? Emo Spidey should be it's own franchise by comparison.

Great thing about comic books are they benefit from long life. Their great lineage typically means there has been at least one above average story told about a particular hero. Daredevil had his Frank Miller era. Thor had the Walter Simonson run. Batman had the Dark Knight. Green Lantern had Emerald Dawn. Hawkman is no exception. "Hawkworld" was a great story and easily a book that would make for a solid film.

One of the worst costumes OF ALL TIME.
  • Hawkman has the most screwed up continuity ever. Just watch this: http://www.ifanboy.com/podcasts/video/ifanboy_m...

I really like the character though. It would be great to see a movie, provided they get the right actor, with a larger build, otherwise, it would just look silly. Also, the movie might make them commit to one explanation.
  • I've always thought Hawkman would make a great pic especially if they adapted Hawkworld, the mini-series that came out a long time ago.

was reading about this earlier today. Also its feb 5th when the jsa thing is airing for smallville. I am curious to see if hawkman will make it into the movie screens. But with the way wb/dc comics has been. There will probably be some talks for a bit, then we slowly stop hearing of anything and poof developmental hell for who knows how long. Personally i am hoping flash will be the next up after green lantern. I do think flash or shazam are the more likely ones to happen since there is some active development going on for them. But time will tell.

This is a no brainer. If you've ever been a fan of this character then no doubt you've read HAWKWORLD by Timothy Truman and John Ostrander. If Warner Bros. is seriously considering developing Hawkman into a feature film they should look no further then this three part series first issued in 1989. A Hawkman movie based on HAWKWORLD would kick ass especially considering that this series dumped all the original pre-history that went along with it giving a fresh new take on the character at the time.

Booooo, I would much rather them back a Flash movie or even a Wonder Woman movie, instead of a Hawkman film.
  • mangoshakes
well Flash movie already has producer and writers on the script. so that's ahead...wonder woman. that could be really good.
  • mangoshakes
I was thinking as reading that it could have some Indiana Jones flavor. more like an Adventure movie with superhero stuff in it too. that'd be fun. not sure how well the character could carry a movie though. He's just sorta a hardedge no nonsense jerk. not exactly charismatic.
  • sands
Isn't he going to show up in the Smallville: Absolute Justice movie? Sounds cool to me!

Man, I used to love Condorman.
  • Superman/Flash?
  • mangoshakes
i find it hard to believe there's no internal Superman discussions. Or he might truly be on break till the JLA movie. if that'd be possible. And i think Flash is still being written.
  • AND AFTER THAT, BOX MAN. HE HAS THE POWERS OF A BOX.

In other DC Comic movie news, the apparent final five candidates for the role of Carol Ferris are:
Eva Green, Keri Russell, Diane Kruger, Blake Lively, and Jennifer Garner

    This comes from Latino Review.
  • mangoshakes
hmm, Kruger or Russell i'd say. not garner. please not garner.
  • Murdock
Yeah, that seems to be the consensus. I agree.
  • fanboy_d
Russell's the only one that could conceivably have chemistry with Ryan Reynolds, but I say hire Blake Lively if it means they get to spend more monies on SPACESHIPZANDALIENZ

I'd love to see Black Adam in here to tie into the Shazam! movie. Since the character has ancient Egyptian origins, it'd work, and help to tie together the DC movies the way Marvel is starting to do with theirs.

this better not be true. WB/DC should focus on the situation with Superman reboot, also they need to do a Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Arrow movie. Hawkman should be the last character that they thinking of to develop now.
  • I wonder how anyone could write a compelling Flash script. Don't get me wrong, I like the Flash, but I think he would be a tough character to put on screen and make interesting without being campy. But hey, maybe campy is a good thing?
  • Except that everyone can relate to being "super fast". The fantasy wish fulfillment completes the first half of the film. But then you can add some hard sci-fi consequences to the character, like relativistic aging and time travel and increased metabolism as conflict on top of big bad antagonist. I think the real problem is that the effects would be expensive as hell.
  • The whole part Ghost thing is that Hawkman and Hawkgirl are eternally resurrecting characters that die every time they fall in love. So it kinda makes sense but will be ludicrous if not handled right...
  • ModernTenshi04
Well, the current Hawkman is dead. Got owned by Elongated Man and his wife Sue in the first issue that kicked of Blackest Night.

Other than that, he's pretty cool. He'll be a major player in the later part of the current season of Smallville.
  • Spoiler City, man! Not to be a Nazi about things, as I'm caught up on my "Blackest Night" readings, but I'm sure many aren't. Just sayin'.

"with an attractive cast and good advance word of mouth, they could get an Iron Man size return"

What about a good script? Doesn't that count for anything anymore?
  • BrendonConnelly
Nope. Only in making a good film, not in getting good box office.
  • Hawkman is one of the best characters DC has, in my opinion. Depending on the incarnation filmmakers decide to use, they would have a wealth or information to use for an origin story. There's just something awesome about a human who rolls with superhumans and isn't afraid to get into the fray. That's something I'd like to see on the big screen.
