Avatar

[Update: This morning, the estimates for Avatar's domestic and worldwide box office take were revised. Avatar performed better on Sunday than initial estimates. The headline has been updated with the correct figures. The following article will be updated as more details come in.]

On this week’s episode of the /Filmcast: After Dark, veteran film journalist Anne Thompson stopped by to discuss Avatar and its box office prospects. While our full podcast review of Avatar won’t happen until Tuesday night, Anne made two points/predictions that I found particularly interesting: 1) She predicted a $1 billion worldwide box office take for the film when all is said and done - a remarkable achievement for any movie, but not as high as the $1.8 billion of Cameron’s Titanic, and 2) There was a high possibility that Avatar would not open as strong as other blockbusters (i.e. over $100 million domestic for opening weekend); it’s based on an entirely new property and the marketing featuring the Na’vi imagery hasn’t been as good as it could have been. Despite this, she predicted, word of mouth will carry it for weeks to come.

It now looks as though Anne’s predictions are quickly on track to becoming a reality. Avatar took in $77 million domestically and $242 worldwide (i.e. North America plus 106 foreign markets) in its opening weekend.

If that $77 million domestic opening seems a little soft to you, it’s because it is: A significant portion of /Film readers out there might recall that a lot of the east coast, including myself here in Boston, MA, were hit by a massive blizzard this weekend. This undoubtedly threw off the original predicted totals by a significant amount, some of which were in the $80 million range. As an east coaster, I might have been looking forward to Avatar a great deal, but I probably would not have risked my life to get to the movie theater. Despite this, it still managed to be the 2nd biggest December opening ever, bested only by 2007’s I Am Legend.

All that being said, there’s still a substantial possibility that this movie will deliver on its financial promise. Its worldwide take was $277 million, making it the 9th largest worldwide opening for any film, and the largest opening ever for an original film, where “original” is defined as a non-sequel, non-adaptation. For comparison, check out Boxofficemojo to see the best worldwide openings of all time (hat tip to The Film Stage). In a world where the biggest movie releases, year-after-year, are sequels and adaptations, it’s refreshing to see an original property get some box office loving.

Word-of-mouth on the film is also excellent. According to the LATimes:

Every demographic gave “Avatar” an average grade of A, according to market research firm CinemaScore, meaning those who didn’t turn out for opening weekend will be getting strong recommendations from those who did. The combination of Christmas falling on a Friday and positive word of mouth has Fox executives buzzing that “Avatar” could gross nearly as much on its second weekend as its first and hit $200 million by the end of the year in the U.S. and Canada.

The Times uses $430 million as the budget for this film and acknowledges that $1 billion worldwide is a possibility. Thus far, $232 million is definitely decent, but the film hasn’t even opened in China and Japan yet, meaning its best days are probably ahead. The Times also gives other interesting statistics: “Domestically, theaters with 3-D screens accounted for 71% of the movie’s gross despite representing only 60% of theaters,” while overseas, the disparity was even greater. This is due to the cachet of 3-D as the preferred viewing format of this film, and the fact that 3-D tickets cost more.

Predictably, other films didn’t make much of a dent this weekend. The Princess and the Frog dropped 50% to take in $12 million, bringing its total domestic take up to $44.7 million, while The Blind Side continues to hold on, taking in $10 million with a $164.7 million domestic total. Did You Hear About the Morgans bombed with only $7 million. Click here for the full weekend chart.

So much has been said about the massive cost of this film, but as I stated on this week’s /Filmcast, regardless of your feelings towards Avatar, its success will be beneficial for the movie industry as a whole. It will show that Hollywood that huge event films can still be financially viable (and as a film lover, I really don’t want them to go away), and it will reward innovators like James Cameron, encouraging them to keep breaking new ground with filmmaking technology.

Feel free to share your thoughts/predictions on Avatar’s box office below. You can also discuss your thoughts on Avatar, listen to my interview with James Cameron, or read the reviews of the entire /Film staff.

There are no words to describe the complete awesomeness of this movie. all i can say is if you havent seen it. see it. if you have, watch it again. Extremely emotional rather than intelligent stimulation, Avatar seen in RealD 3D Village Cinema at the Knox shopping mall center, Victoria, Australia seem to grab attention to horse-lovers, bull rodeo fans, National Geographic television documentary fans, pelican bird-lovers, exotic plant-lovers, bug-lovers, cultural tribe lovers and military model lovers. Despite the lack of safety precautions and mission impossible-like strategies, such as disrupting the power supply to avoid satellite location while wearing bullet-proof vests, the movie experience had a mix combination of ferris-wheel funpark, museum, zoo and forest elements.
  • alphacinator
Loss of life from both tribe and military could have been avoided if power supply sabotage entered Jake's mind during his escape at the camp. Power failure to computers would allow time for tribe to invade camp with surprise attack.
  • krap2nite
I think this might be one of the most objective conclusions drawn about the movie out of all the other comments. Not sure what the whole disrupting the power supply talk is about though. And I would at least upgrade from ferris-wheel funpark to theme-park ride.

The most amazing movie going experience i have ever had and i have seen thousands of movies. I strongly recommend the 3-d version.
  • Haven't seen it yet but the story seems pretty cliche from the previews.
  • not really an original film...
  • mchops
Yeah, the snow kept me from seeing it on Friday or Saturday. Had to wait
until Sunday for my first viewing. Next is Imax 3D.
  • mchops
Original means it's not a sequel or prequel just an fyi.
  • It deserves every dollar. It pampers to its audience perfectly.
  • mbellerbrock
Correct me if I'm wrong, but:

    Avatar: 241.6
    2012: 230.5
    Hancock: 182.5
    The Day After Tomorrow: 151.4
    Van Helsing (questionable): 106.9
    Troy (also questionable): 101.6

It scares me that Roland Emmerich is on there twice...

PS, I realize it's due to it being updated, but David, you report 242, 277, and 232 as the total worldwide gross.
  • MickJ
Really glad I saw it in 3D. Fantastic to watch.

"not like any other movie .... absolutely great!!!!"

You haven't seen very many movies, have you.
  • Yeah. That tree of souls thing is in absolutely every movie ever. Oh, and that glow-in-the-dark rainforest. And the rideable dragons are real frickin' ripped off.
    That bloke.

It's times like this that I'm glad I live in L.A.

Nothing but gray skies and mild rain right now
  • Dwayne M.
Gil Brooks kind of pointed it out..but the domestic gross is actually
$77.3 million and the worldwide is $236.5 million
  • i'm really glad avatar is getting positive vibes. it's a shame the same didn't happen back in march for watchmen.

Entourage predicted this whole "Weather fucks with potential box office outcome" a few seasons ago, when James Cameron directed the fictional Aquaman, only to have to be released during a massive heatwave. If the outcome is anything like that, it will be the highest grossing film of all time.

Don't get me wrong, I know its just a weird coincidence, but an interesting one nonetheless.
  • Shane
Well here in Australia, in my city it's selling out every session. I am going to see it tomorrow, had to book 2 day's in advance.

It has great word of mouth. People I know that thought it looked dumb are now going to see after their friends said it was awesome.
  • Jr.A
Limited attendance on East Coast due to inclement weather... on a Cameron film. Subtly reminds me of the Entourage episode where Cameron's Aquaman might falter due to a power outage.
  • Gil Brooks
Looks like it just may be the biggest December opening ever:

'It will show that Hollywood that huge event films can still be financially viable'

Hmm...Star Trek, Harry Potter and the half blood prince, Transformers 2 and New Moon are what then (even if the latter 2 were ripped apart by critics) ?? Hollywood will make huge event movies regardless of whether a few fail or not. I think the success of District 9 and Paranormal Activity were a lot bigger for the industry since they showed movies could become sizable hits without being stuffed with CGI effects, cute animals or raunchy humor.
  • nawaz
Hi am Nawaz from mauritius...all i want to say dat avatar have win my heart..its really a great film..av seen it on d net but z film have not yet arrive in mauritius...am so eager to watch if in 3d cinema
  • MrW
You completely missed the whole point of this article. It has nothing to do with event movies in general being financially viable, but original IP movies being viable. That's what this article is celebrating.
  • JasonSearcy
I think he meant more that 'Original' event films can be financially viable. That they can and should take a risk on new movies. The huge budgets are already guaranteed for sequels if the first does well.
  • Peter R
Wanted to see if but the damn snow kept me inside all weekend.....sure the fact that the Northeast was out of the picture didn't help it's take.
  • Renaissance_Man
Anybody else find it ironic that we're making a big deal about Avatar having the highest worldwide opening for an original property and yet, just recently, it looks like 2012 did the same. From the list, it looks like 2012's opening was also, at the time, the highest worldwide gross for an original property. And yet, it doesn't seem as big of a deal.

I have no point in making this comment. Just an observation.
  • I have to agree with Anne Thompson's take on Avatar. David Poland at MCN wrote up something similar as well. I think an important thing to note is that the worst drop last year over the holidays came from The Day The Earth Stood Still and that was only 22%. The holdovers stayed even or even increased. Avatar just might match it's OW!
  • Bowl of Snakes
It is worth the price of admission for the unobtanium scenes!!!
  • TotallyNotNick
Little bummed that Princess and the Frog isn't doing that great. But I'm happy people are seeing Avatar. Great moviegoing experience
  • Technically, it's an original film but let's be honest... it sure didn't feel very original.
  • hailstate
NICE. Original is the last thing I think of when talking about the Avatar story.
  • Stop being such nitpicky killjoys guys - you know what he is talking about. It is a wholly original piece of intellectual property, something that Hollywood isn't so keen to bank on because it is harder to gain market awareness.
  • krap2nite
Agreed. Honestly - everyone puts too much weight on the "story." Star Wars wasn't an original story either, but that doesn't disqualify it from being a major breakthrough in the film industry as well as a significant influence on culture across the world. The draw of Avatar, like Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter, is that it brings you into the world created for the audience. If you want an original plot, go watch and indie flick - or a play.
  • hmm don't know what movie you saw.
  • I saw Dances with Wolves in Space. The 3D was really cool. How bout you?
  • right...
FACT: Dances with Wolves is the only movie that has ever explored a relationship between two people who come from different, conflicting cultures. It invented the concept, no film has employed it since, and it has remained so ingrained in the public consciousness that a storyline even approaching it is disrespecting the masterpiece that is Dances with Wolves.
  • oops i mean na'vi
    haha
  • like when the avatars ate the buffalo hearts...I remember that!
  • douglaskling
100% agreed on Dances with Wolves in Space in 3D. Tweeted that right after I saw it. The comparison is IDENTICAL!
  • i'll be honest, i still don't know what the original star wars trilogy were about and i loved them. as a kid i just didn't care about the story, it was the world i was in at that moment. thats how i felt with avatar. i felt like i was on pandora and i couldnt care less about anything else.

someone posted this earlier and i thought it was perfect

I'm surprised that The Blind Side is still doing so well in theaters. I guess piracy doesn't hurt a movie as bad as some of us think...

The Blind Side was leaked online, I believe, on opening weekend. Maybe earlier. And not a cam version, this was a DVD copy. Great quality. Did people just not hear about this (like the Wolverine leak) or what? I haven't even really heard it mentioned.
  • Joe
I think that's more along the lines of the audience seeing the film. Blind Side seems more geared toward older audiences, i.e. parents, adults, etc, who aren't tech savvy and definitely wouldn't be able to pirate the movie even if they tried.
  • evilninjax
i think this movie is going to have legs. if only b/c YOU MUST SEE THIS IN IMAX!
  • Falen
I was planning to see it again Sunday, but haha I also decided probably not worth dieing for since I could not see the houses across the street through the whiteout of snow.
  • Roland21
Awesome numbers for Avatar. But seriously who where expecting a 100 million opening weekend in the US need to study a little how to box office works.

December is the month of multiplier, not big opening weekends, just look at Return of the King and Titanic. The great thing about Avatar is that now thanks to the snow it will drop less on the second weekend. The word of mouth is extremely positive, this will do great numbers.
