VOTD: Rodrigo Blaas’ Alma

Alma
Pixar animator Rodrigo Blaas took time off to make his directorial debut with an animated short film titled Alma. Originally from Spain, Rodrigo Blaas has worked in animation for more than ten years, and was able to collect some of the best artists in the field to be part of his independent project: French animator Bolhem Bouchiba, character designer Carlos Grangel and Sergio Pablos, ArtDirector Alfonso Blaas, music composer Mastretta and sound designer Tom Myers.

At the 2009 Fantastic Fest, I was on the jury for Best Animated Short film, and fought hard for Alma. And while I was unable to convince my fellow jurors to name the movie Best Animated Short Film, we were able to award the film with a “special mention”, which is basically the runners up prize. The short tells the story of a young girl who becomes intrigued by the contents of a mysterious toy shop. Watch the short film embedded after the jump.

I thought I was about to see the first Pixar murder scene. =/
I liked it though. It took those creepy dolls and made them creepier. I guess that explains why those eyes are always following you =l

    Creepy, but very cool.
  • Overall, it was a good video. Texture and aesthetic were amazing. The music at the end did not fit the mood at all, though. Additionally, I would have liked to see a girl in a red dress run by the camera at the end or something similar.

The music did fit the mood because everything went full circle; a fresh new doll was harmlessly presented for a new girl to discover.
Maybe it was parodying the mood that was felt before we knew what was really happening? Either way it's a great piece of music and the only disappointment here is the fact we can't see more of this story.

That was the best animated short I've ever seen. Too bad it didn't win. Thanks for posting the video!

lol. The "Up" esque soundtrack was totally inappropriate. That being said, it would be interesting to see Pixar do something dark, even though I don't see it happening

I like how it seemingly not taking itself seriously makes it even more serious and messed up.
  • ! Excited to finally see that this is finally online!

    That's pretty damn creepy.

Well, you know what they say: "Curiosity turned the little girl into a doll imprisoned in a satanic toy shop." Or something like that.
  • Interesting...

I remember seeing this short film at SIGGRAPH back in early August before it premiered. It's great to see it again on here as well.
  • Spooky!! Although pretty great.

Wow it really flipped the pixar-cutesy idea on me pretty hard. That was pretty creepy and the shaky cam was a nice touch.

This is my kind of animated short. Loved everything about it.

    That was pretty good.

But like others have mentioned. Did not see the malicious twist there in the beginning.

As soon as I saw the doll replica of her though I knew things were going to go south.

this feels like a twilight zone episode
  • That was a pretty f* up movie. I thought it was going to be cute and funny not a horror piece.
