Michael Jackson Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas

Disney Parks has confirmed that Honey I Shrunk The Audience will be closing sometime in the next few weeks to make way for the the return of the Francis Ford Coppola-directed/George Lucas-produced Michael Jackson sci-fi action 3D musical short film Captain EO. The original film will return to Disneyland’s Tomorrowland beginning in February 2010.

Rumors that the attraction would return to the Southern California theme park hit the web in September, but were quickly denied by the mouse house. Bob Iger admitted at the time that Disney was considering the possibility but that “It’s the kind of thing that, if we did it, would get a fair amount of attention and we’d want to make sure we do it right.” Many people took the comment as meaning that Disney wanted to update the attraction in ways to appeal to today’s audiences.

Captain EO Poster

The 17-minute film cost a record $17 million in 1986, a cost of about one million dollars per minute of film, this was, minute for minute, the most expensive motion picture of all time. If you adjust that number for inflation, it rises to almost $35 million. That’s a lot of money for a $17 million short film. Another fun factoid is that Steven Spielberg was originally signed on to direct the movie but had to cancel due to scheduling conflicts with his other film projects. The film opened in Epcot and Disneyland in mid-September 1986, Tokyo Disneyland in March 1987, and Disneyland Park (Paris) in 1992). All four installations were closed down by 1998.

The story followed Captain Eo and his rugged ragtag crew who went on a mission to deliver a special gift to a wicked queen (played by Anjelica Huston) who lives on a dark, desolate world. Captain EO can be found online on many of the video sharing websites.

The film featured two songs, “We Are Here to Change the World” and “Another Part of Me” by Michael Jackson. The action on the screen was recreated for the live audience using lasers, laser impacts, smoke effects, and starfields that filled the theater. The presentation was replaced by Honey I Shrunk the Audience, another live interaction 3D short.

Wonderful news!! Growing up in So. Ca., we went to Disneyland for birthdays & took our out of town guests there, but I've never seen Captain EO... we were always so concerned with riding as many rides as possible in one day. However, as a huge fan of M.J., I was hoping that Disneyland would have the good sense to replace "Honey.." w/the classic Captain EO to permanently commemorate one of the greatest entertainers of all time. And to the poster who said that he would now cancel his Disney trip, I hope that Disney realizes that misinformed detractors like this person are in the minority. To millions around the globe, Michael is beloved. Those who sought to extort millions from this beautiful soul, through false, malicious disgusting allegations, may have been the focus of the american media, but millions around the globe knew the truth. He gave his entire life to entertain the world, and pass along a message of love...a HUGE THANK YOU to Disneyl for bringing this gift back!!!!! I can't wait to see it this May!!!

I think I will be CANCELING my family trip. It's disgusting of Disney to be promoting a PEDOFILE. With the news of the FBI files that he was abusing boys on trains, I'm disgusted with Walt Disney.

I'll never take my children there. I thought it was a company that promoted FAMILY families, not GLAMORIZE pedofiles.

    Disney makes me sick.

wow. you must have no life. if you are going to be posting anything about Michael Jackson, you can at least be aware of the FACTS, rather than what you hear. I think your problem is that you will never amount to anything in your life and the only thing you can do about it is to try and rag on others. Do you know how much he has donated to charities and how many programs he has set up for the wellness of children? People will remember him for many years to come and after your grandchildren have passed, I'm sure no one will even know or care that you existed. So how does it feel to try and knock someone down who is by far a better person than you?

Did you even read the FBI files or do you rely only on tabloids/your imagination for news? Seriously. This stuff is getting old. Anyway I think its great they are bringing Captain EO back.

Great! Can't wait ! Will it be shown in HK disney land ?
  • That short film is reeking of nostalgia. So very, very 80s. The effects, the editing, the characters - and of course Michael Jackson. I've only ever seen it on video - I'm guessing seeing it in 3D at Disneyland improves the overall experience a great deal.
