X-Men First Class

The news that Bryan Singer was returning to the mutant fold wasn’t surprising, but it sent a little thrilled wave through the geek community regardless. Question now is: what is he doing with his new film, X-Men: First Class? We know that Jamie Moss has been hired to write, and that Fox is moving fast on this one. Prior statements by producer Lauren Shuler Donner have set up that the film will cover the early days of the original X-Men team, featuring Cyclops, Beast and Jean Grey. Now we know a slight bit more.

Thanks to a statement the director gave to Variety, we have a little more info about what First Class will cover:

This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where there [sic] relationship took a wrong turn. There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from ‘X-Men’ will figure into the plot, though I don’t want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain.

The first comparison being made at this stage is to the JJ Abrams Star Trek; no surprise there, as Fox would love to replicate the success of that film. A young, inexpensive cast re-invigorating the X-Men franchise? That’s ideal for the studio.

Based only on that statement, First Class also sounds like it will supersede the long-proposed Magneto movie. That one hasn’t seemed like it had any chance of getting made after the version to be directed by David Goyer was blocked by the writer’s strike. That movie would have also used young actors to play Magneto and Charles Xavier (after the notion of de-aging original Magneto actor Ian McKellan was rejected) and explored the early days of their friendship and eventual enmity. Don’t be surprised if conceptual elements for that film end up in First Class.

Intriguingly, Variety reiterates Singer’s attachments to Battlestar Galactica and Excalibur. I’d been hoping his new Galactica was dead, so that’s a little punch in the kidney.

Recasting Magneto and Xavier is two steps toward X-Men: When Harry met Lloyd

After Superman Returns, I'd be a little worried if I was an X-Men fan. Still, another opportunity for Singer to audition desperate coffee jockeys who want to be movie stars. Whatever happened to the last "next big thing"? What was his name? Ruth?

in his defense. even he said he was gonna take a long break after superman. and if you look at his imdb page, he's been really busy lately.
  • mchops
Since it will be about Xavier and Magneto i have some hope for this film.

And what's all this about the third X-Men movie sucking? I'm no Brett Ratner fan, but I really enjoyed The Last Stand. At least enough that I won't cringe as much if I hear he's doing something with a franchise I like.

Maybe it didn't make enough money. Let's check Wikipedia... "Its opening-day gross of $45.5 million is the fourth-highest on record while its opening weekend gross of $103 million is the fifth highest ever."

    Nope, that's not it.

Have you been living under a rock? Last Stand sucked, everyone knows it. Too many new characters, no character development, weak story, and it killed off too many big characters at the end for no reason.

why would it be about the money? that doesn't make sense.

I really didn't like Last Stand. And i'd have a hard time watching First Class and forgetting that this is all gonna end so stupid

I'm the same way, I would much rather have X4 to bring Jean back in some weird alien way instead of a movie just showing wee X-babies
  • agemoi
well the producer also said an X4 is likely. So, hopefully that may help heal what X3 did to the franchise even though its still gonna be FOX spear heading this shit.

honestly, id like to see First Class if an X4 will bring a new interesting story and brings back cyclops. He may not be a huge fan favorite (ala Wolverine) but he didnt deserve the bastard treatment Brett Ratner gave him. Although Singer didnt do such a hot job with him in the first place.

Anyway, im just on a fan rant. One could hope I guess. Its frustrating to see how easy it would be to fix this yet i know FOX wont give 2 shits at what I, or others, have to say

This is bullshit. They're just trying to do Star Trek again. Everybody's going to try to repeat that shit, but nobody will be able to, because there's only one J. J. Abrams and there's only one Star Trek.

    Star Trek wasn't a masterpiece.
  • MC Peepants
Son, if that wasn't a masterpiece I don't know what is
  • ThreeDee Specs
Then you clearly don't know what is. Fun film to be sure, but I prefer my masterpieces to make some sense. As a sci-fi "masterpiece" Star Trek has more holes in it than it ever did. It also features some of the worst examples of cinematography seen in a big budget picture. Obviously too busy wobbling the camera and shooting light into the lenses for more flare than worrying about little things like "focus"!

BOOOOO. I dont know the details... but Singer kinda already left X-men in a preverbial lurch by stepping down (a la) putting Last Stand into the mitts of a dumbass director. All so he could go off and ruin the Superman francise with Returns...blahhhh. And, now he wants to come back... no thanks.

    'preverbial'?
  • Typo in post title. It's Bryan, not Byran =)

I think everyone Is gonna be lovin BS after this one. Well lookin forward to this!!

I am very excited to see what he can do with Battlestar Galactica because Ron Moore's version, except for the tv miniseries faltered in my eyes very badly. I believe that Singers version would wipe the floor of Ron Moore's version.
