Avatar Outselling Star Trek in Advance Ticket Sales

Avatar

As you might have noticed — I’ve been a big supporter of Avatar, and loved the movie, which I have now seen one and a half times in 3D (don’t ask…). But I’ve been very skeptical about the box office prospects of the film, especially judging by the word of mouth. Well, I just received word from Fandango that Avatar is currently outselling Star Trek in advance ticket sales at the same point in that film’s sales cycle. Trek grossed $79.2 million in the first three days of release, including midnight screenings.

The online ticket website also claims that Avatar currently represents 87% of weekly ticket sales, and the the film, which opens tonight at midnight, has already sold out “hundreds of showtimes” across the country, “from Buford, Georgia to Roseville, California.”

According to a survey of Avatar ticket-buyers on Fandango (as of 8:00 a.m. PT this morning):

  • 72% indicate that the film’s positive reviews have increased their interest in seeing the movie.
  • 70% claim they do not care about the film’s budget.
  • 37% of men (surveyed by Fandango) plan to bring a date with them to see Avatar.

Saw Avatar 3D IMAX on the night of release.... I must say that this was one of the most amazing theater experiences of my life. Any of you who say this movie absolutely sucks are either trolls wanting to get a response and haven't even seen it, or just dont have the use of any of your senses...

Saw AVATAR aka "Dances with Smurfs" and it was great.
Its quite a ride. Worth seeing again. Saw it in 2D( 3D theater was sold out)
    will see it in 3D.
  • Danny
So, 37% of men are not planning on getting laid after their date.

This is not a new story, nor should anyone expect it to be, Cameron took a love story and made it epic! What's not to like?
  • bcreek
I purchased my IMAX tickets on Tuesday for the 7pm Friday showing, and the girl informed me of how lucky I was to get them considering she only had about ten left for that time. I figured this movie was going to be big, but I didn't realize that it would do this well. I personally can't wait to see it!
  • frelling_cute
It might not be the best movie ever but I am sure it has more of a brain than Transformers 2 or 2012.
  • Guest
    That's not saying much though.
  • frelling_cute
But Avatar has been nominated for awards. I am sure it is in a whole other league.
  • Guest
I saw the movie last night. It's absolute balls.

Sorry to disappoint Peter, but it was expected from Avatar to have a big opening weekend. The question is how much is he going to do second weekend, when it will face against movies such as Sherlock Holmes, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and Nine's wide release.

I think the movie will tank.
  • frelling_cute
Aee young kids really going to want to see Sherlock Holmes???
  • Guest
Just saw the film. It's fucking shit.
  • got my ticket, imax 3d in sacramento

I live in Australia and have seen it twice and am seeing at in IMAX today and its funking epic! Ignore the haters, this is awesome. All the so called story or dialogue problems evaporate after the clunky setup, so about 15 mins in. Yesterday at 2pm in the cinema it was about 3 quarters full, which bodes well for an excellent weekend here.

    Alvin Purple? ;P

I really wish I enjoyed it as much as you. I'd avoided all the pre-release press and was absolutely ready to be blown away. Went along to the morning Imax session which was sold out, ready for the thrill ride I'd been promised. What I got instead was a kid's film that I felt like I'd already seen twice, and not an especially well acted one either.

Checking the internet now I can't believe the rave reviews it's getting. Bah, I dunno... maybe the child in me is dead. Glad you enjoyed it, though.

Outselling Star Trek, not outselling Transformers 2 or New Moon.

    http://www.thewrap.com/article/avatar-pre-sales...

    Sorry.

Plus, business will probably fall dramatically once word of mouth spreads that the whole movie is a nearly-3-hour leftist circle jerk that climaxes in the symbolic murder of American soldiers.

Remember, this is a worldwide release, not just here in the States. Last time I checked, our war policies wern't winning the hearts and souls of other nations over........................
  • starscream9289
It will flop at the box office, they said.

It will be the end of Cameron's career, they said.
  • Guest
If people are sane and word of mouth spreads, it should flop.
  • Amish Patel
Yeah, it flopped.........FLOPPED THE NUTS PRE FLOP. Its been out a week and has made 100 million more worldwide than its $350+ million production costs...It will gross more than 2 billion by the time its said and done, and the haters are the ones on the sidelines watching reality pass them by.
    TA TA...
  • going to the midnight with two friends.

Where's the "What did you think?" post for Avatar Peter? I saw it 2 days ago, it's been out that long in the U.K and other countries - I don't think I need to remind you your readers aren't just North American.

Box office Mojo's derby is saying that the film could do $93 million for opening weekend.
  • Philippe
I agree. It was epic and beautiful. But after the movie I realised none of the characters were really that memorable. And the score wasn't that good.
I saw it in RealD 3D. Is Imax 3D a lot better ? Next time I go see it I want to really get the best out of it.
  • Guest
    3D doesn't mean shit. It's a gimmick.
  • Amish Patel
You fool...I know 100% you did not see Avatar before writing this rift-raft. It is, to date, and will be, for at least the next 10 years (only trump card would be an Avatar 2 DIRECTED BY CAMERON), the greatest movie made...
  • bcreek
Where did you go see it? Last time I checked it doesn't come out until December 18 at midnight.
  • Philippe
I'm french. Movies come out Wednesday here. For once we get something first. i have to wait until January for Up in the air and Febraury for Mr Fox.
  • V_Fish
It's been out in other parts of the world for 48 hours already.
  • Saw it yesterday as well. Midnight Showing. Sold Out.
This is definately a ride. Like... wow.
DAMN wow. damn WOW. DAMN WOW.

Like... epic... big... damn... and... epic... and wow big and... woo... and ...eff... and wow.
  • Charles
Eh the midnight showing isn't sold out here in Aventura, FL. I don't know man AMC Aventura is like the movie premiere station in north Miami Dade. If it isn't sold out, it might not be a good weekend for AVATAR. Oh well still gonna see it though.
  • concretelogic
Not really a surprise. It will end up making money.
  • Saw it yesterday. Was pretty okay. Not as good as i expected it to be, but still worth the money.

It's definitely not a gamechanger when it comes to the visuals.
  • han
You're probably the only one that I've read/heard say that.
  • What exactly do you mean?
  • Rev Rick White
Overhyped and the animation doesn't look any better than a video game. Sorry, I will let the Titanic-like sheeple go pay for it.
  • bcreek
What game have you been playing that looks as good as Avatar? I will leave my house and drive all the way to the store in the freezing cold to buy it this very night!
  • iec
    cough cough...

    you're an idiot.

    cough.

    The film was crap.
  • Scruffmcgruff
    lol ridiculous
  • riggs
i never once felt like this movie was going to tank, because of cameron.
  • Ryan
Good news! I'll be seeing it in IMAX 3D tomorrow at 7. I've been a little worried at the lack of stories regarding ticket sales.

I'm all for big budget sequels, but I'm excited to see a unique world (not really unique story, though) unfold on the big screen.
  • DorienG
I'll be seeing it at 7 also! Yay for us! Seriously I can't fuckin wait...
  • Guest
    You're worried? For James Cameron?
  • Ryan
Absolutely. I'm pretty young, so besides Titanic a good chunk of my friends aren't familiar with James Cameron. The trailers have been underwhelming, and with only Titanic recognized by them, the hype just isn't there.
  • Guest
    Did the film underwhelm you?
  • iec
    good news indeed!
  • Sorry Peter gotta ask, you saw half of an Avatar screening?
  • I saw Avatar for a second time at the very end (last film) of a 27 hour film marathon called But-num-a-thon. At the time I was wayyy tired and had been up for 31 hours in a row. I only half count this viewing.
