Quentin Tarantino’s Top 8 Movies of 2009

tarantino_camera_1

The Hollywood Reporter had a chance to ask Quentin Tarantino about his favorite films of 2009, and the filmmaker responded with the following eight movies…

1. JJ Abrams’ Star Trek
2. Sam Raimi’s Drag Me To Hell
3. Judd Apatow’s Funny People
4. Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air
5. Prachya Pinkaew’s Chocolate
6. Jody Hill’s Observe and Report
7. Lee Daniels’ Precious
8. Lone Scherfig’s An Education

Tarantino admitted that he has yet to see James Cameron’s Avatar, Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones or Clint Eastwood’s Invictus, and that he needs to revisit films like Bright Star and District 9, as they might have the power to rise into his top 8. He also agreed that his film could not qualify for his list. Watch the video embedded below:

I’m surprised at some of the movies that Tarantino left off of his list, including Pixar’s Up, 500 Days of Summer, and the previously mentioned District 9.

I would probably have to pick The Hurt Locker as my top movie of '09.

I loved observe and report. Really great flick. Funny and dark, serious side people don't give enough credit to because of the comedy veneer.

Sure his list is going to be completely different within the actual end of the year. Complete fail on THR's part for not waiting two god damn weeks.
  • Joe Mama
You would think that he would have loved the gore and Asian-ness of Ninja Assassin, Asiaphile that Tarantino is.

Does nobody get it? QT is fucking nuts! we all know this. Why isn't his top movie of 09 a top 10? He has weird taste and good taste and this is not even his final favorite 8 movies for 2009 so why is everyone saying he should've included this and that. Also did anybody notice that these are his favorite movies of 09 not the best of 09? As in he likes those movies no matter how bad or good or weird they are.

Ps: Observe and Report- I can't even take it serious its way too over the top all the jokes/gags are typical.
District 9- The first original alien movie in a long time. Excellent acting, descent story, better than average directing. It deserves to be in anyone's top 8 list except for the haters..
300 Days of Summer-Is also a great movie from 09 but im not sure if its in my top 8.
Away We Go- Takes the spot in my top 8 that 300 Days of Summer could've had. It may not be an ideal choice for many but its one of MY favorites.
Star Trek-Is an awesome movie. You think its easy to reinvent something thats classic and boring (no offense to trekkies) and make it into something new like JJ did?
Avatar- Will most likely be my #1 even tho i havent seen it yet. Even if the dialogue's not that good (like some reviewers have said) everything else in the movie should even it out and it will still be awesome.

I feel I need to add a non English speaking perspective (I'm from Belgium). Broaden your minds, people!

    My top 10 for 2009

    1. Let the Right One In
    2. Das weisse Band / The White Ribbon
    3. In the Electric Mist
    4. Still Walking
    5. The Chaser
    6. Un prophète / A Prophet
    7. Moon
    8. Antichrist
    9. De helaasheid der dingen / The Alasness of Things (that's a Belgian film actually)
    10. Coraline

That list SUCKS. Chocolate was the worst movie ever. I would have fit "Wild Things" and Herzog's "Bad Lieutenant" somewhere on that list and "Ashes of Time Redux" would top it. I haven't even seen half of the movies I want to, but his list only skims the surface.
  • evilninjax
No INGLORIOUS BASTERDS on the list?
  • Annoyance
why the hell doesn't anyone read the articles?
"He also agreed that his film could not qualify for his list."
so seeing as how his film COULDN'T go on the list, it didn't. (i'm not just singling you out here, this goes to everyone who has asked that question, or any question that simply could have been answered by reading the article.)
  • Alex
Observe & Report is the new Taxi Driver.
  • Aaron
"District 9" Should really be on there. I haven't seen "Moon" with Sam Rockwell, yet, but I hear that its a really good sci fi movie. "Trick r' Treat" came out this year on DVD so i guess it could qualify. If so it would definitely be on my list of the top films this year.
  • I bet if we let him, QT would put Inglorious Basterds at the top of his 2009 list. I know it's at the top of mine.
  • Rainman
    Top 8? Jesus.
  • gigaherc
Haha nice to see he didn't mention D9, as it's pure chaotic garbage in a manner ROTF was. I'm glad he put Funny People and Education on the list.

I must admit Tarantino seems to change his taste a little bit though.
  • LarryFine
Drag Me To Hell Was Brilliant. "QT" should be ashamed for not including District 9 on his list. Some of those other films he mentioned were turds.

    In response to John Heuer
I respectfully disagree with you. I agree with you on the fact that films don't need to have endearing/likeable characters that being said, if we are supposed to be rooting for him at the start of the film, than there needed to be some sort of endearing qualities about him. Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver is a perfect example, yes he's a deranged human being, but you get inside his deluded head and you understand him. I never got that from Seth Rogen's character, so I wasn't rooting for him at all.

If the film is a subtle commentary about people who abuse what little power they have, there are better and funnier ways to show it.

"also at no point does it show jody hill is sexist. I'm sure your referring to the date rape scene. Which it clearly is defined as date rape. the reason it is funny is because hes so warped they he doesnt understand what he is doing is wrong."

We're just going to have to split hairs here, I'm not saying sick and twisted humor can't be funny but this instance I found vile, unfunny, and misogynistic.

"your not supposed to root for the character... which you know that when he stars saying the racist shit in the beginning."

So in which case I'm watching a movie about a character I don't like, get everything he wants because...it's a subtle commentary on the use and abuse of power. Which means, the movie is supposed to put a bad taste in my mouth, and make me hate everyone.

Again we're just gonna have to disagree I didn't find Observe and Report's humor funny, I just found it mean spirited.

No love for The Hurt Locker, D-9 and his own movie? Tarantino your list is a bit generic, boring and lame. Out of all those the only movie that I really need to see is Chocolate.
  • dogless
So you didn't read the article, you read the list and just had to comment, right?
  • Yes, Star Trek deserves some love.

Disagree with Funny People, but at least QT's not following the herd on A Single Man or A Serious Man.
  • It's like he does this thing every year. Or maybe he does and we just didn't care.
  • DanDollar
inglourious basterds is better than everything he put on that list. but it would have been a terrible list either way.
  • Antihero
According to recent news articles: He's wearing a "BLACK" shirt. Tarantino is directing "Black" movie. Confirmed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_(video_game)
  • This is his list, not ours. Some of you are acting like you know what movies he personally enjoys.
  • Deeds
    ZOMBIELAND!
  • Ray
Wow ... this list sucks. STAR TREK number ONE?!? I mean, it was enjoyable, but also a mess structurally. Where's HURT LOCKER??

Unbelievable. Can we now please revoke Tarantino's "God of Cinema" moniker??
  • Tarantino gets "god of cinema" status because he is what every wanna be filmmaker cruising the net thinks of himself. The dude worked in a cinema store, watched a lot of movies and then turn out to become a powerhouse auteur. It's is by some crazy grace of god that he is any good.
  • Yes I hated Observe and report. He goes down on my list now because of that. and 500 Days of Summer should have been on there or at least Up!
  • Stefan
Why should they have been there? It's his list, not yours.
  • haku
More reason not to talk about film should I ever meet Quentin. Observe & Report? Paul Blart R Rated... is still a turd. Funny People? Those actors stopped being funny a long time ago. Extract was better than both by far, but even it wasn't worth of a best of list. Precious great. Chocolate sure, great special fx, and you know Quentin has to 'advertise' his Asian clique for cred but it was o.k. Star Trek would have been better w/o that horrid lighting effect they used. I agree about Antichrist... would think he'd like it but you never know with a list like this.
  • haku
lens flares! lens flares = yuck
  • zebrat
yummy yummy rainbow flavored lens flares.
  • Looks like Quentin Tarantino has yet to see Moon. Oh well, he was probably too busy looking for a way to sneak Inglorious Basterds onto that top 8 list.
  • Yoi
    Exactly
  • Rob_Grizzly
Cool. I mean, how many other directors would flat out tell you what their favorite movies of the year were? QT rox. Star Trek ftw!
  • Borat
inglourious basterds deserved to be in that list!
  • Auster24
I really like Tarantino's film selections, even though I don't agree with most of this list.

A director of his caliber will usually rattle off a "Best Of" list filled with obscure art films that few people have seen, tacitly implying that the common moviegoer hasn't actually watched anything good at the theater, just the mindless drivel of Hollywood.

That being said, if any other person issued this list, no one would give it a second thought. Bet you won't find any other critic that puts Star Trek and Funny People as the two best movies of 2009.
  • Reese
Agreed. It's a refreshing list, free of pretension.
  • And full of unnecessary lens flare...

Sorry, I mean, call Tarantino what you want. But I've never heard anyone say that the man is "free of pretension." Usually it's the opposite.
  • MasterEvilAce
Funny people was neither a good comedy, nor a good serious movie. It really doesn't deserve to be on the list.
  • I say the same thing for District 9 but with halves of attempted commentary and action. The halves undermine each other.
  • Gomer
I'm surprised he didn't like Black Dynamite. That movie was amazing, and would fit in better in Grindhouse than Planet Terror did.
  • Anon
I would probably have to put Away We Go on my list.
  • nickypoo
Wonder what he thought of Antichrist...
  • MonsterKilledThePilot
Top 8 movies? Why not top 10? I dont get it...
  • comradeparker
    FACE!
  • Probably because stopping at 8 is just as arbitrary as stopping at 10.
  • MonsterKilledThePilot
    Touche.

    OMG! And wheres 2012 ?!
    ;)
  • peter, may i suggest a large-scale /film top ten list at the end of the year? perhaps top ten by all the /film writers, and then some way for users to submit their top ten, and someone (i will do this if nobody else will), compile everything into charts?
this time of the year is very exciting to me. i love making top ten lists and reading others.
