a couple of dicks set phtoo

The other day, Kevin Smith revealed that after a very lengthy decision process beginning with Warner Brothers deciding to drop the title of his new film A Couple of Dicks, then deciding to keep it, in the end the film would lose its original, double-entendre-worthy title. But what would the new title be?

Now, evidence has surfaced that the title of Smith’s new film may, in fact, be Cop Out. Hit the jump for what we know.

According to The Film Stage, the Warner Brothers Exhibitor’s Website has a listing of the trailers for several upcoming films:

Trailer Placements: 12/25/09

* Sherlock Holmes: (ATT) Clash Of The Titans (TR1) / Inception (TR2) – COMBO RT 2:30 – New Trailers
* Sherlock Holmes: (ACC) Cop Out (TR1) New Trailer
* It’s Complicated: Valentine’s Day (TR3)
* Nine (Expansion): Valentine’s Day (TR3)
* Up In The Air (Expansion): Edge Of Darkness (TR1)
* The Road (Expansion): Edge of Darkness (TR1)

So a trailer for a film entitled Cop Out might be attached to Sherlock Holmes? There’s a few pieces of evidence indicating that Cop Out is the new title of Smith’s film. Recall that Smith’s original statement at News Askew read as follows:

The Movie Formerly Known as A COUPLE OF DICKS has finally settled on a (network-policy-dictated) replacement title! While we’ll always have DICKS in our hearts, the title we just now locked makes me smile on a bunch of different levels – including this 1: we can now advertise our movie properly (& ironically). And said marketing begins… on every print of SHERLOCK HOLMES, Christmas Day!

So, Smith’s film has a mainstream-friendly title that is ironic and will be on every print of Sherlock Holmes. Combine this with the fact that there is currently no upcoming film listed in IMDB named Cop Out and it seems like this might fit the bill, especially as the title could be referencing Warner Brothers’ lack of resolve in sticking with the original title. I don’t have access to Warner Brothers’ exhibitors website, but if you do, feel free to shoot me an e-mail at slashfilmcast(AT)gmail(DOT)com to confirm or deny this report. If Warner Brothers issues a statement on the matter, as they were supposed to days ago, then we’ll update this post.

Also, according to this listing, it looks like there will be a new Inception trailer for Christmas Day as well, so Sherlock Holmes viewers will have an abundance of visual treats under the tree awaiting them. Note that while it was originally thought that the first Iron Man 2 trailer might be in front of Holmes, there are now reports that it might play in front of Avatar instead.

Discuss: If Cop Out is in fact the new title, what do you think of it, especially compared to A Couple of Dicks?

Well if it's a choice between Cop Out and A Couple of Cops, I'll go with the lesser suckage.
  • JMoney
check out kevin smith's twitter, he pretty much says Cop Out is the title

geez man you could have just updated your last post about this which btw was a waste of bandwidth since you could have summed it all up in the main page.

Ha! Like it, hope it is the new title instead of something like "A Couple of Cops".

And to all the people saying that the joke will be lost on people who haven't followed the movie's title history: who cares? Someone already made the point that none of the masses will care about the title, only that it's an action comedy with Bruce Willis And Tracy Morgan. Besides, wouldn't it be cooler that you get the inside joke than it just being a lame title? Come on!
  • Jake
Who cares about "Cop Out"? It's all about "Inception"! Christopher Nolan, people!
  • Guest
  • ...nah, Cop Out is more important.
  • Erick
Well, when the DVD comes out, Warner Bros can do an easter egg where you can hit the angle button on the remote and see the "A Couple of Dicks" title card... and it won't be any different from the Movie Formerly Known As "Cop Out." But I wonder if one of the cops will turn out to be gay.

Once I started thinking about it, I got a few laughs. Besides, anything's better than A Couple of Cops.

Plus: Iron Man Cop Out, Inception, oh my!
  • rockinrors
    Dicks ftw!
Cop Out is alright though. :)
  • MonsterKilledThePilot
    An Inception trailer? Cowabunga!!
  • krackajap
The problem is, while this is a really clever title and I really like it, it's lost on anyone who doesn't know the story much like how the brilliance of the Zack and Miri Make a Porno stick figure marketing was lost on those that didn't know the story behind it.

I'm a casual Kevin Smith fan, but this movie sounds dumb.
  • Tercotta is right, totally called in a comment on a post a day before this one.
  • Cop Out as titel - BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
    Inception trailer - YEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAH!!!
  • I'd be very happy to see the Iron Man 2 trailer in front of Avatar, I've already got my midnight tickets and I'm not so sure I'm going to see Sherlock Holmes in theaters.
  • Lol that linked article from March says "Warner Bros Doesn't COP Out." Did they come up with the name after reading Peter's title?!
  • It's too bad the MPAA is so politically correct it's afraid of the word "dicks"- slang for detectives used for over 60 years. Come on! At least "Cop Out" is still clever. The previous suggestion of "A Couple of Cops" made me want to hurl.
  • MPAA had nothing to do with this. Warner decided to change the title when none of the big tv-networks wanted to show ads for the flick before 9.

I'm just happy that Kevin Smith is directing something he DIDN'T write. He might actually make a decent flick now.

If only Tarantino would follow suit.
  • Frederik
That makes no sense. The whole idea of a Tarantino movie is his awesome dialogue and characters. His camerawork isn't anything special, without a script written by him it could be whoever directing.
  • Justin Jump
Alright. I definitely don't think that's accurate, but it does seem to be what everyone else thinks. I think Tarantino's writing is annoying as shit. Ditto for Kevin Smith.

The difference is that Tarantino CAN direct (even though he borrows/pays homage to/rips off a lot of his raddest stuff). He knows his way around a camera. He's very PRECISE, let me put it that way. Confident.

I liked Clerks and Mallrats back when I was in middle school/high school, but I've seen them since, and they definitely do not stand up anymore. And his recent stuff..gah. Awful.

    For me, at least.
  • Yeah, probably some trouncing ahead. I'll disagree with your opinion on Smith, he makes some amazing stuff, but yeah, I don't like Tarantino either. I'll join half your trounce taking.
  • Nokoo
    Prepare to be trounced.
  • Justin Jump
    Oh no!
  • It's lame but I think just having the word Porno in the title hurt Zack & Miri's box office so I get why the studio wants it changed
  • Mr Smith has mentioned at interviews that the title was changed due to complaints issued to the studio. NOT having "Porno" in the marketing is what hurt Zach and Miri's BO. Without the porno, the title didn't sell to young men, Smiths base demo.
  • ApexOversteer
I disagree. I think Kevin Smith is a $20,000,000 earner. His movies earn between $20,000,000 and $30,000,000 at the box office. Zack And Miri is his biggest earner to-date. His audience is his audience. Those of us that go see Kevin Smith movies in the theater today, are the same ones that went and saw Dogma after Rolling Stone told us how funny Clerks, Chasing Amy and Mallrats were. The word "porno" had zero effect on the box office for that film.

Disclaimer: I like Kevin Smith's movies, and have enjoyed them all several times each. Ok, maybe not Jersey Girl.
  • greggorybasore
C'mon, Jersey Girl was a great flick!
  • bender
The title definitely hurt Zack & Miri, which is a little ridiculous. It's a lame world we live in.

Anyway, I love this title. It's childish, yeah, but it's also fitting. Excellent.
  • The title is whatever. I'm impressed with the investigative journalism. we need Dave Chen covering Israel, not movie titles.
  • eddymovies
    I LOL'd.
  • The Duke
Kinda lame honestly... I don't see the people who are unaware of the story of the title getting the joke, or finding it clever...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6os-2KfbcI

these guys had much better ideas haha... Jay and Silent Bob Become Black and Bruce Willis, and then become cops, and then fight crime
  • Agreed, hinging the title of something in wide release on an internet in-joke, while admirable, seems foolish. Emphasis on 'seems' because there still might be a relation to the actual film; I haven't read the script.
  • ApexOversteer
The unwashed masses don't give a shit what the title is. Hell, they don't even know who Kevin Smith is. If the trailer is funny, and the tv ads are funny, and the one name they do know, Bruce Willis, sells it on the junket, the title won't matter at all. They could call it "Deadpan And Goofball On Patrol" and and it wouldn't make a difference.
  • ApexOversteer
Well, I'm not sure Cop Out is a shit title, to be honest. Yeah, its not the title Kevin wanted, and it isn't the one we (the fanaticals) were given and used to form our earliest opinions of the film, but that is not to say that A Couple Of Dicks would be the only appropriate title for the film.

Cop Out may in fact work on all the levels it is designed to, serving as the first piece of exposition the audience gets, and as the sideways middle finger Kevin intends.

My point is that our community of film fans is tiny, and we are the only ones who will ever know that Cop Out was once A Couple Of Dicks, and ultimately the title change will have little effect on the normals, once the marketing kicks in.
  • Of course, rose by any other name would smell as sweet. I'll see it with that title or Cop Out or Couple of Dicks if the trailer is good. Having a shitty title wouldn't necessarily hurt a good film, but a good one would definitely help draw people in.

Put bluntly, if you could make everything about something awesome, why would you make part of it shit?
  • vladd88
That's a pretty sweet title, made me laugh.
  • It's quite the cop out.
  • harhar
Sounds like a cheesy 90's buddy comedy...
  • Probably cos that's what it'll amount to. Definitely looking forward to it though!
  • Scott
    Clever.

LOVE Kevin Smith. Bring the movie!
