This is almost refreshing. Just a few days ago we told you that Summit was working on an “action-heavy Dracula remake, entitled Vlad, with a script by actor Charlie Hunnam” and direction by music video director Anthony Mandler. Turns out that the project isn’t quite what anyone expected. Yes, it’s based on the life of Vlad the Impaler, and yes, it’s intended to be a big, sweeping film with a lot of action. (’In the style of 300‘ keeps being used as a reference.)

But the film is about Vlad the man, rather than an adaptation of Dracula, and won’t touch on vampirism at all.

So says writer, Undeclared and Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam, to EW, as he describes his take.

As the script stands now, we don’t touch on vampirism. That was my one non-negotiable area when we were developing it, and thankfully, nobody suggested that we should delve into it at the end. But you can clearly see the things that Bram Stoker took…. Vlad was such a brutal man, and the trick is to make him sympathetic.

He says he envisions the film as “more Braveheart than 300,” and getting into the real history of Vlad’s family before showing the guy as a champion of Romania and opposer of the incursion of the Ottoman Empire. There’s a war between Vlad and the Empire that is a brother against brother scenario, and a Christian vs Muslim thing. At least for now. “That’s how it is now. This isn’t the shooting draft we have. Who knows, a lot of this might end up getting trimmed down.” Reading the full interview, Hunnam certainly sounds like a guy who not only did his research, but poured most of it into the script. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that much of the history is cut, but hopefully Summit won’t totally eviscerate it.

Will Hunnam play Vlad?

Listen, it would be a dream come true for me to play this role. But I’ve had my heart-broken so many times that I’m not kidding myself that there’s any real potential. There’s a reality to making this type of film and how much it costs, and I’m just not a big enough name to justify that type of budget right now.

No beautiful people partying to the wee hours or angst ridden teenage vampires? Count me out (this is sarcasm, to the slow ones out there)
It is refreshing to hear it will be a movie about a bloodthirsty ruler who is not literally thirsty for blood...
Going for a '300' lock is confusing.. I did not that Vlad slowed himself down during battles....
Sorry, but lets do it in a better way than in the vein of '300' More in the way of 'Gladiator' would be better IMO
  • What a humble quote at the end. He just went up in my book.

Lost interest when I heard "In the style of 300". God I bloody hate that film. Prepare for the abundant amounts of slo-mo and industrial music. Clash of the Titans had so much promise until I saw the trailer as well.

But then, I suddenly regain interest when I hear "more Gladiator than 300". Not a fan of Hunnam though, dude can't act. And yes I've seen Sons of Anarchy as well.

Is Clash of the Titans going to have an industrial score? I thought Craig Armstrong was reuniting with Leterrier.

Can't wait. This should be really good.

Charlie's been developing and writing this script since his time in Romania when he was filming Cold Mountain and has mentioned it several times in his interviews. I'm quite interested in it :)

And also, thank you for emphasizing that the film will be about Vlad the Impaler and not Bram Stoker's Dracula. A lot of articles and post are misleading and people mistaken it to be a vampire film because Summit made Twilight.

I love the idea of a flick about Vlad that leaves the Dracula stuff to the side. Even with Summit being involved I'm still looking forward to this.

This will be so freaking cool if they do it right. Going for Braveheart over 300 is a good move.
  • More Braveheart than 300 would be nice ... something with substance

Vlad has a pretty interesting story. When I heard that they were going supernatural with it I was pretty disappointed. Now I read this and was all for it until they mentioned the 300 influence.
  • If they go more Braveheart than 300, that would be awesome. I'd love to see a realistic and gritty take on this interesting historical figure. I've always been fascinated by Vlad The Impaler and this this would make for a GREAT film.
  • Making this would leave room for a pretty juicy sequel, too.
  • One would hope so, especially if they are giving it more of a historical feel. Fuck, action packed warfare is always up for sequels.

Saw a reading at Huddersfield Literature Festival earlier this year by C C Humphreys from his book "Vlad: The Last Confession". Could this have anything to do with it? It was the first thing I thought of when I read this /film headline.
  • Hopefully it's better than the TV movie.

This has already been done, as a TV movie a few years ago:

Sounds good to me. I always wanted to see a real gritty and bloody bio-pic on the Impaler ever since I first saw the first few minutes of Coppola's Dracula, reading about him, and even when purchasing McFarlane's Vlad figure. Why not Charlie playing Vlad, it would make perfect sense having the writer play the character since Charlie will know what to do and how to portray it properly.
