The Wolfman Gets Bloody R-Rating

wolfman_trailer_2

After numerous delays, reshoots, editing changes after multiple test screenings, and of course - Danny Elfman’s infamous departure, I wasn’t sure The Wolfman would actually be completed for the planned February 12th 2010 release. Well, it appears that a final cut is in hand.

Universal just informed me that The Wolfman has finally received a rating from the MPAA, and has been rated ‘R’ for “bloody horror, violence and gore.” I’ve never recieved an e-mail from a studio publicist bragging about a film’s MPAA rating before, nevermind a bloody R-rating. I would assume that Universal wants everyone to know that they have decided to go with the longer, bloodier, more violent (and from what I’ve heard, better) cut of the film.

If Universal is happy with the film, I would expect them to start screening it to the public pretty soon, possibly even this week, to spark word of mouth interest.

  • I loved this movie, and Benicio did a great job. Its awesome when an actor is actually a fan of the work he is in. Hopefully universal will take this classic monsters remake thing to the fullest and maybe even make a few modern monster mash movies. And keep Benicio as Larry Talbot.
  • I'm all over this one. Has abot of that old school vibe to it. Plus the R rating couldn't hurt either.

I'm kind of surprised in this day and age that the studio would embrace the R like this. Still, I was going to see this just out of the curiosity (and the second trailer was really good), and the R further bolsters my hope for it.

Those editors brought in some weeks back must have done a heck of a job with this film!

I'm still excited/hopeful for this flick as well. The world needs a darn good werewolf movie now more than ever.
  • I've been looking forward to this film since hearing about it in 2007. I only hope all these adjustments have been worthwhile and actually pay off.
  • can't spell werewolf without the 'r'

seriously though, with the type of gothic feel they went for, effective use of gore and blood can only benefit this film.

Is it weird that I'm still really excited for this film? I've always loved The Wolfman. Even though it isn't as good as Frankenstein or The Bride of Frankenstein, or even Dracula, The Wolfman has always been my favorite of the universal films.

surprised this is even up for discussion

    lycanthropy need the R

Hopefully they're not going to cut it to get a PG-13, even if it might mean more cash for them.

Maybe When Universal Test Screening The PG-13 Cut Came Out Terribly Bad. So The R-Rated Cut Came Out Better And The Studio Is Happy With The R RATING And I Am Too! Take That Kiddies

  • Oh sure, it's rated R. But does he have great abs? That's the important question.
  • Al Jarreau
This is the first good thing I've heard about this movie. It reminds me of how the marketers of The Happening tried to build a campaign around its R-rating (even making the R red in the poster http://www.impawards.com/2008/happening.html ).

It comes off kind of desperate.
