macgruber1

Amir Bednarsh was given the opportunity to see an early screening of MacGruber, and posted an early test screening review on The Vertex. It should be noted that this is not a review of the final film, but thoughts on an early cut of the movie (sans final effects, edits, music…etc). Basically, everything could change.

I have included a few excerpts from the review below, minus spoilers:

I was wary that it would follow in the path of prior Saturday Night Live films. Most sketch concepts generally flourish when they’re just that - sketches. A full-length comedy falls into the trap of relying on the same old recycled jokes to the point where you not only loathe the film, but you retroactively dislike the sketches they were based on. You might not believe me when I tell you this, but there’s no doubt: MacGruber was amazing. … Unlike other comedies, MacGruber isn’t completely tongue-in-cheek. The characters surrounding MacGruber play their roles more seriously, resulting in outstanding rapport between the hero and his cohorts. …. The second star of the film is the hilarious and talented Kristen Wiig, who, as usual, delivers the performance expected of a comedian on top of her game. … MacGruber is the best SNL film since Wayne’s World back in 1992. It manages to take the concept of the original sketch and infuse it with new life. It generally works at all times, and manages to combine physical comedy, witty banter, and awkward sex. If you enjoy a good comedy, go see this movie when it comes out next year. Trust me, this movie is…

  • This is going to up there with the rest of s hitty S.N.L. movies. Roxbury was the only one funny and how many lame ones? (Superstar, It's Pat, Ladies Man, Staurt saves his Family and the Waynes World movies were good back in day but know they are so done) Blues Brothers was good but I'm talking about the ones the last couple of decade's.

Wow The Best SNL Film Since Wayne's World!!!!

    (that's not saying much)

This review is not a plant. I saw a test screening last week (might have been the same one) and I went in thinking it would be mediocre at best. I ended up laughing my ass off. It is way funnier than one would think and Val Kilmer fits his role perfectly. I actually enjoyed Ryan Phillipe, too.
  • Dillon
Same, Val Kilmer was great. ps. I just did an upper decker
  • RosanatorDA
this just made my list of "im looking forward to this" status.

I saw it as well. My friends and I all expected nothing less than shit. It was pretty fantastic. I'm gunna go out on a limb and say it's the funniest comedy i've seen this year. I haven't laughed that hard in a theatre in a long time.
  • Octoberist
that should be the movie poster right there.

"Who is that mysterious man wearing Fruit of the Looms?

wah wah wah. anonymous complaining on the internet is original. if SNL is crap, don't watch it. i've been a devoted watcher for years, sure it's not always perfect, but recently it's been great. i'm sure there's plenty of stuff for you to do instead!

personally, i can't wait for macgruber.
  • ILOVE_SNL
THANK YOU!!! god im sick of all thse people complaining about it. Ur saying that SNL was only great when it had Chris Farley and those people but whatever. its all super funny. I personally love everyone apart of the cast now. they are amazing and the rest of you can suck it.

It's that kind of fan mentality that keeps sinking ships like "The Simpsons" afloat.

Is this a plant? Seems like a plant...

    It's a trap!

I put some trust in it based on Jorma Taccone's involvement, the Lonely Island bits have been the best thing on SNL in years.
  • Nick1
Whether or not this review is a plant, it doesn't really matter, because as you've said Jormas Taccone is directing and he's a very funny guy. Akiva is usually the director of the trio, but I can't imagine Taccone's comic sensibility not coming off in the film, especially with Forte and Wiig leading it. The sketch has pretty much worn thin, but I'm sure they've come up with something fresh to make the movie interesting.

It's completely over the top ridiculous and funny. Completely 80's like Hot Rod but obviously much better. Let me just tell you this, just about every time you see/hear an explosion you hear a jaguar go "rawwwr"
  • Is there an SNL film besides Wayne's World and Blue Brothers that is any good?
  • muffin7
The Ladies Man was a guilty pleasure.
  • Marxipan
    Coneheads.
  • Skiswgard
What about Night at the Roxbury?

  • The picture is funny, but I am still a little weary cause SNL has the habit of overacting
  • Why don't I trust this?
  • muffin7
I read the script about a month ago and remember being VERY surprised with how good it is. I actually read the whole thing in one sitting even though I hadn't planned on it. It just read very fast and fun.
It's also surprisingly vulgar, for sure gonna get an R rating. There's a full frontal picture of Mcgruber with a tiny baby dick, among many other references to his genitals.
The opening sequence is also fantastic, where he gathers up his "Dream Team" for about ten pages only to have them all get blown up in a van completely randomly.

As hard as it may be to believe, it really might be a great movie. All I can tell you is that I laughed a LOT while reading the script, and I never really thought the sketch was all that funny... Except for the one where Shia Lebouf comes out of the closet to Macgruber. That was gold.
  • I trust it… as one opinion. I like giving everything the benefit of the doubt, but *individuals* have also loved 'Meet the Spartans'
  • getawaysticks
Same here. I don't believe it. Sorry.

SNL Movies since Wayne's World: Wayne's World 2, Coneheads, It's Pat, Stuart Saves His Family, A Night at the Roxbury, Blues Brothers 2000, Superstar, The Ladies Man. Yep, that's some rarefied air.
  • yeppp
coneheads is absolutely histerical, easily second best to waynes world. and all of you know this is true.
  • eldudarino
you forgot tommy boy and tommy boy was hilarious
  • Bill-C
  • sideshowRaheem
You can't count Tommy Boy it wasn't based on a sketch and it wasn't even a SNL Studios production. But you could maybe count the movie Mean Girls, even though it wasn't from a sketch it was released by SNL Studios and produced by Lorne Michaels.
  • sideshowRaheem
Yes, Baby Mama like Tommy Boy stars two SNL cast members but was not released under the "SNL Studios" umbrella.
  • and it was written by Tina Fey!
  • Wasn't it the same case with Baby Mama. They don't count in the official list of SNL movies I think.
  • dagreenman18
Superstar wasn't that bad. Everything else, especially It's Pat, was horrid.
  • Especially It's Pat? Obviously you have not seen Blues Brothers 2000.
  • shoothamaguchi
Got to agree with Cookie. I love The Ladies Man.
  • cookie
watch ladies man again and tell me that shite isn't pure fuckng gold
  • JD
I wasn't aware SNL was still a comedy show.
  • JD's Boyfriend
Hahaha. You're so aloof. I wonder if your wit will be as shining when you're withering away in the AIDS ward.

snl bashing is as old and cliche as the show itself. from chevy chase to will ferrell, you cant keep good performers forever, they inevitably use the show as a platform to jump ship and the show suffers for it. that said, i really like watching bill hader and kristen wiig so i still tune in from time to time.

Yeah, I thought they moved on to Drama too...
