hathaway_malkovich

This is where those Black Cat stories from a few weeks back get really interesting. It’s also where some purists start throwing little fits.

New reports have John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway in the frame for roles in the new Spider-Man picture as father and daughter villains. Malkovich would be playing The Vulture, and Hathaway would be playing The Vulturess.

The who…? You might be surprised, if not outright appalled, when you read just who she is…

According to Movieline, Hathaway would indeed be playing Felicia Hardy, the comics character also known as Black Cat. In this version of events, however, she won’t be going feline but will instead “become a brand-new superpowered figure called the Vulturess”.

The first report on there being a father-daughter villain team up actually would have pointed straight at the Vulture if somebody had a better memory. A source at the time kept referring to the character as “Viper”, not Vulture. So close.

Now, there’s no reason this rejig won’t work brilliantly but I still bet Raimi and Co. get it in the neck. Frankly, fidelity towards the source material is ludicrously over-protected by comics fanpeeps who seem to be missing the bigger picture. Who cares if we get Black Cat or Vulturess? Shouldn’t we simply care that the end result is smart, purposeful, well made and engaging? With Raimi, David Lindsay-Abaire and Gary Ross pulling the strings I think I’d be happy to bet the shirt off of my back on this one.

Hathaway has already been linked to the role, back when we assumed Felicia would be wearing a slinky cat suit and not some sort of birdy get-up. Malkovich is a new name to the Spider-game, to the best of my knowledge. I like both of them a great deal and think they can hit the required tone perfectly.

I wonder if this new Felicia will also have the white hair? Not terribly Vulture-y, is it? But then, it wasn’t too Cat-y either. I dare say the cleavage costume will go relatively unchanged, perhaps just recoloured into green. It might be like the Norman and Harry hand-me-down all over again.

Movieline’s piece also discusses the exclusion of The Lizard, a villain that the entire series seems to be building towards. According to them, “the suits simply can’t bring themselves to sign off on such an odd-looking enemy”. Is there no concept artist out there who could make this thing work for the witless executives?

Note that all information is pointing to Malkovich’s character taking over The Daily Bugle. That’s another continuity change from the comics, I believe. Again, I could care less as long as it works in the context of the movie.

ok I dont mind malkovich/hathaway. but as those characters it will come off sillier than the larry david or carrot top as electro rumors.

for malkovich to be onboard now after famously snubbing such roles in the past scars the production's integrity.

    this move if true reeks of 'post-twilight' when it should be post-dark knight;
Raimi made the films art-house, which quietly irked most of us, but delighted snobsites whose editors still mock fanboy readers under "tweety fanhole" pseudonyms..

Raimi must get on Nolans level and match or exceed The Dark Knight, or it will be a waste. he will have to go full serious arthouse in tone towards that goal without upsetting the fanboy meatball crowd, which is unlikely.

For the love of god - Felicia, Feline don't you see the connection, Sony/Raimi...Oh I get it now, this must be one of those "What if" stories.
  • RJBlakeAAU
Okay, before we start spouting all of this hatred what if some of this is misinformation. Not from Raimi, but from the source. I mean, I don't have a problem with Felicia Hardy being the Vulture's daughter (keeps the black cat being a second generation villain) but what if the "Vultress" info is wrong and she does simply become the black cat. Or what if she is the vultress at first and then becomes the anti-hero we like to take her father down, what takes down birds? Cats. I dunno. Just thinking. Not the best stuff in the world, but I could see it working.
  • Federico
    That's it.
    The franchise is doomed.
  • moviefan
as i said we dont know if this is sony's ideal, marvel's idea, raimi idea, or just some BS stuff. nothing is confirmed 100% from all the parties of importance. We have gone through many rumors last few months. So probably in next few days/weeks we will have some more rumors to talk about. I do hope we dont end up with this idea. But who knows how things are really going to end up.

malkovich as the vulture is pretty good. but the vulturess? really? ok, whatever, but why have felicia hardy be the vulturess? couldn't some other character fill the role of the vulture's daughter? that's like having johnny storm be spider-man(which, i admit, could actually be cool but is still fucking weird). and goddammit, the lizard needs to be in this movie. even if it's just a minor part. ok, rant over.
  • Felicia Hardy is the Black Cat. Period. What they're suggesting is like turning Edward Nygma into The Penguin, or Scott Summers into Beast. If true, this is garbage.
  • Guest
There's not much point speculating on the quality of the film until a trailer's released. The Spider-man franchise has been good so far.
  • But I love JK Simmons. Hopefully Malkovich is a competitor instead.
  • Wafflepwn
completely lost faith in this movie...sucks...The Vulturess is the most idiotic thing ive ever heard of...id rather see Venom get blown up by a grenade that only burned Harry's face...jeez why didnt they reboot? WHY DIDNT THEY REBOOT?!...if these are the only two villains in the film (if u can even call this piece of crap a film anymore)...expect the box office to be LOW LOW LOW...probably worst Spidey movie yet...Ill take #3 anyday over The Vulturess movie...what the hell Raimi...were all going to lynch u if that character name is even mentioned in a movie...

    LAME!!!!!! Worse Idea Ever.

Ive commented already but i havent really said what i wanted to..

I just see where this is going already. So fucking predictable. Again, this father and daughter evil team isnt going to bad... at all. Just like the past movies. Theyre going to be in the need of money, her dads paper is going under, they get a hold of some interesting tech in some way ((probably from oscorp still trying to make military suits)) and bam. Interesting new love interest occurs while peters relationship with MJ is on ice and then cut to parker fucking sobbing like a turd when he realizes his new love interest is really the Vulturess!!! GOD DAMMIT! If this is where its going then count me out.

If theyre doing a whole other trilogy I wanted something different, something exploring Peters more mature life as a man, not a dumbass college boy. I really want to see something more thought provoking, creative, and intriguing as far as villains go.. Im so tired of this not-so-bad-guy becoming a not-so-good-guy and gets redemption at the end. Oh, and just throw MJ getting kidnapped by them at the end for good measure.

Seriously? I duno guys, i hope this is misdirection because if it isnt its just going to be the same crap as the last 3.. I loved 1 and 2 also, but 3 really made me negative to all this. Give us different, NEW! Not just another movie but something to compete with the likes of Iron Man for example

Am i outta line here? i duno, but i feel like i already know this damn plot =\

I've been finger-crossing for the Vulture for a while now, actually. I think he's a fairly dynamic character, and certainly out of the ordinary (in terms of big budget pictures) enough to make the movie fresh.

To be honest, I've always just assumed Ben Kingsley would be the Vulture. It seemed so very perfect to me. He looks very Vulture-like as it is.

The Malkovich idea definitely pleases me, just the same. I love me some Malkovich.
  • Razor
Um i have no words to express how disappointed i am seriously the man is taking way too many liberties from the comics, sure its an adaptation but when you star creating your own world its not spider man anymore just a empty shell i do not care for originality when it comes to making spidey movies but i do care for continuity and a sense of purpose which this series had lost when the second movie ended.

So basically i'll be downloading this one to make sure i get my money's worth out of it.
  • moviefan
well nothing is 100% confirmed or denied yet from the studio. So we should wait and see what the studio/marvel have to say. Hopefully if its felica and vulture they will be two different characters and not assoicated as father/daughter and the whole vulturess wont happen.
  • Phil
Run, Sam! Surely, you must have a pay-or-play deal, nobody will blame you for leaving the project if the studio's f@cking it up all over again.
  • Christopher Ware
Making Felicia Hardy into Adrian Toomes daughter? Not so bad. Making her Vulturess? Monumentally stupid.
  • Tweety Fanhole
After Spiderman 3, I cwyed my widdle eyes out! How could Waimi be so cwuel as to have another idea when I only want to see live people playing out my favowite comic books?

I'm cwying again! Won't someone think of my wights???
  • Debunker
Another reason why kids should wear bike helmets, or they turn out like this person.
  • It was probably those damn putty cats.
  • It seems they are focusing too much on trying to make these characters related and fully explained. I say, leave a little mystery! The Vulture shows up, and while swinging away to find him, Spidey runs into a certain cat burglar running from the cops. They can interact from then on doing whatever, and it creates a more organic universe when not everything has to be tied together. You can hint at the Black Cat's origin through exposition, it doesn't need to be spoon fed to the audience. Not everything can be tied up in their own little universes.
  • Garber
Ugh, this reeks of Sony's meddling yet again!
  • Debunker
QUOTED: "Frankly, fidelity towards the source material is ludicrously over-protected by comics fanpeeps who seem to be missing the bigger picture. Who cares if we get Black Cat or Vulturess? Shouldn’t we simply care that the end result is smart, purposeful, well made and engaging?"

You're right, while we are at it lets not stop at comics, lets rewrite Hermione Granger's part in the next Harry Potter movie , she is now Voldemort's assistant.
Now I KNOW that was ridiculously over the top, but I'm trying to make a point. JUST because you presume that only a handful of the people watching are loyal to the brand doesn't give you reason to butcher the character history.I mean isn't that really who most if not all of the superhero movies are for, the FANS of the comic? I mean the at LEAST the sequels should be. If Raimi wanted to be grabbing new people in he would not have made Spiderman 1 so god awful boring.

Im commenting way to much here but i like spiderman and im tired of getting angry at all the news relating to part 4.

Your right, who do you think goes to see these movies? I assure you that there is no General Audience for Twilight, but that banked huge this year and its solely for the fans. If it wasnt for the fans these movies would have never taken off or even green lit.

I dont really understand why its always the people with no prior knowledge of these things that say "Get over it, fanboys!" Seriously? Just becuase its a comic doesnt mean it should be abused. its a different medium of storytelling, and if you dont like it, then screw off. Why should comics be bent to the will of movie studios while everything else CANT BE CHANGED CAUSE ITS A BOOK! I respect it because the writing has to be at least decent and its accompanied by acclaimed artists, so you get 2 art forms in one..

    ANYWAY

    why?
srsly if you have to rework the characters like this to give your movie interesting character dynamics you need to move on to a different movie.
    lol.

What's sexier...Anne wearing black latex..or a green suit with feathers? ..hmmm.
  • MarkoP
She still might in black latex. After all, other than the original character design of The Vulture, have you seen a real green vulture?
  • Guest
Green suit with feathers does it for me.
  • mobbdeep
Honestly, if they are going to go with Black Cat & rework the character, why not just make Gwen Stacy the Black Cat?

She has already been introduced in #3, she's got the white-blonde hair, she spent #3 trying to get Spidey's attention & her father is a cop.

Rebellious young woman turns to thrill crimes to get the attention of her super hero crush & piss off dear ol' dad.

They have already substituted Mary Jane in #1 & 2 for the Gwen scenes from the comics (falling from the bridge due to the Green Goblin).

Why not use the existing character & actress and go from there?
  • Slatters
I felt sort of the same way, she's a female character that they established in the third who served no real purpose, they might as well do something with her now. She certainly looks the part.
  • Jax
I'm done even caring about Spider-Man 4 at this point.
Looks like it's going to pulll a spider-man 3 again and cram to much stuff in it again.
  • jarkosevich
fidelity towards the source material is ludicrously over-protected by comics fanpeeps who seem to be missing the bigger picture

um, who do you think goes out and sees these movies multiple times and makes them sucessful or can trash them on sites and through word of mouth no one goes to see them? yes, ignore the base that made the character worth turning into a movie. brilliant.
  • sauce_1
    John Malkovich, Yes.

Everything else is a great big pile of disappointment.
This franchise has turned into a joke.
  • grok
    no anne hathaway please.
  • Octoberist
why? I don't like how many people always pick on the actresses in comic book movies and when they still pick a decent actress, the attitudes don't change. Is it because she has coodies?
  • Octoberist
I'm trying not to be negative here, but the Vultress thing is forcing my hand to become very skeptical here.

In The Dark Knight, Montoya was suppose to be in the movie. Because of her 'betrayal', Nolan decided it was against her character and just changed her name to 'Ramirez'.

With that in mind, I'm always open to changes when it comes to adaptation but this..I don't know. To make changes like this, it was probably better to just change her name to something else...
  • Phillip
Once upon a time, John Malkovich was offered the role of Norman Osborne/the Green Goblin for the first "Spider Man"; he declined, siting how terrible the script was, especially the dialogue that his character was given.
I wonder how much money they threw at him for this one?
  • Joe
Exactly. I find that interesting. I thought his comment back then was more in the line of "I don't find comic book films all that interesting."
  • the whole Felicia Hardy as The Vulturess just seems kind of hinky to me. As a few people have mentioned if you are going to have a character called The Vulturess then why not make a new secret identity character to go with it instead of wasting a great character from the spideyverse.

I do think this is still early days for the film and characters in it so can well imagine this getting changed. Plus all the rumours flying around that Catwoman may be in the next Batman film may account for Black Cat being pulled from the fourth Spider-Man film.

I'm just going to wait and see. Whatever happens I'll still end up going to see the film.

Malkovich as the Vulture (hope it is Adrian Toomes) is great casting.
  • Octoberist
    I like that word..hinky.
  • charlie
i could care less about what happens in the actual comic books, but the fact of the matter is that after the absurdity that was spiderman 3, these movies should not even be made. that movie absolutely buried my desire to see anymore of the spiderman series, and i've heard the same from many other people.
  • Slatters
Then don't go and see it? Frankly I haven't let my dislike of the third film taint my enjoyment of the first two (and I'm not quite sure why people are so melodramatic enough to do so).

Sam Raimi has shown he's a competent enough director, why not let him learn from the mistakes of the third movie? Hopefully he'll make some awesome movies where we get to see more of the Spider-Man universe in live action.
  • moviefan
ok anne and john are great actors but man oh man i hope this doesnt happen like this. john is fine to be just the vulture. Anne could make a great black cat, but dont have her assoicated with the vulture. Maybe have her be her own villain after the same thing vulture is after. Then spidey has to stop both characters from doing it. Hopefully things pan out right. No need to change around a character for stupid reasons.
  • Slatters
I would actually enjoy seeing a father/daughter team up. They've done the whole two villains who join together motivated by their hatred of Spider-Man blah blah blah, it could be a more interesting dynamic.
  • Wait... wasn't there a Vultress in the MC2 universe, one of Spider-Girl's villains? Just want to make sure.
  • Slatters
Yeah, except she was called "Raptor". I don't see the big deal if that is the role Anne Hathaway is playing, though I don't really understand why they would make her Black Cat's alter ego.

I really don't see it happening anyways, until photo's and trailers for this movie start coming out, its just going to be rumours and speculation.
  • mchops
Raimi obviously hasn't learned a thing. He's becoming the new McG.
  • Octoberist
Straight up, Spider-man 3 was run by a committee that was Sony and Marvel. Marvel wanted Venom and Sony wanted..whatever. Raimi was then micro-managed to the point where he had to let go of his original story (Vulture and Sandman) and had to settle with Venom and the sexy Gwen Stacy (who was the best thing about part 3)

SO my point being is I understand the skepticism towards part 4, and with this recent rumor. I can see some of the anger. But don't call Raimi the new McG please.
