As much as I wanted to love Wolverine, I couldn’t get past the horrible dialog, plot, and misuse of iconic Marvel characters. They couldn’t even get Wolverine’s claws right—and it’s not like they haven’t had several other films to perfect such a simple effect. Needless to say, my enthusiasm for the upcoming Deadpool film has been fairly tepid thus far. Now Chud is running an interesting rumor that, if true, could actually make me hopeful for a Deadpool film. Apparently, Fox may be looking to hire the writers of this summer’s Zombieland, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, for the film.

The writing duo, who have worked together on television projects like The Joe Schmo Show and Invasion Iowa, are pretty much a perfect fit for the wise-cracking character. They’re certainly a better pair than Wolverine’s David Benioff (a legitimately good writer, having written both the novel and screenplay 25th Hour) and Skip Woods (Swordfish, Hitman). Woods was brought on to “touch up” Benioff’s original script after being impressed by his Hitman work (seriously?)—which was probably the first of many bad decisions by Fox when it came to Wolverine.

Zombieland was definitely one of the most fun experiences I’ve had at theaters this year, and I think Deadpool film with a similarly light tone could work very well.

Although Hugh Jackman’s enthusiasm for Logan didn’t help Wolverine much, we can still take some solace in knowing that Ryan Reynolds seems to have a real love for the character. He’s mentioned in the past that Deadpool will break the fourth wall in the film,  a trend lifted from the comics. While it could just end up being distracting and gimicky, it could also be a fun way to help differentiate the film and its title character from the onslaught of other comic characters hitting movie screens.

Reynolds also recently talked about his dream director for the film, a little known director named Quentin Tarantino. Speaking to MTV, Reynolds mentioned the following:

You think directors for a movie like this and you immediately picture [Quentin] Tarantino or somebody like that.”Obviously Tarantino is a guy that likes to direct his own material, so there’s a good chance he wouldn’t be the guy. We all have our lists of dream directors.

While I’m sure most people would love to have Tarantino on board for their starring projects, Deadpool isn’t something he’d likely do anytime soon. Like Reynolds mentioned, Tarantino has expressed reservations in the past about adapting other people’s material (in reference to Jackie Brown).

Discuss: Do you think the Zombieland writers are a good fit for Deadpool? Are you excited for Deadpool at all?

You know who needs to direct this?
The guys that did Crank and Crank 2. The directing and work on it is SO Deadpool....

i do love Reynolds as Deadpool.... I love the idea of the writers from Zombieland writing it... the only way anyone is going to get over Fox's decisions for this movie is to just assume its going to be terrible and theres a good chance it could be. soo... this movie will suck (i hope not).

If they DO get to write it, then I'll be ecstatic for this movie (which I'll ultimately end up seeing regardless- I love the character). Zombieland was frickin' awesome, and this sort of thing seems like a great follow-up project. As long as they keep the core elements of the character's comic roots, then I'll be satisfied.

Zombieland writers are hot right now, they have as much a shot of writing the script for Deadpool as QT has for directing it.

Zombieland wasn't well-written, so no. No, now I am not excited for this. Of course, the fact that it stemmed from Wolverine (possibly one of the worst movies I've ever seen) didn't make me think it could ever be good. Also, Reynold's ending up as a mouthless, mindless dumbass with sword-arms and no head really didn't help the case that the character could ever go anywhere and it would make any sense.

zombieland was a waste of my time, beats me why people like it

Because your tastes ≠ everyone's tastes. And vice versa. :)

I think the QT comment was supposed to be funny - a joke from Mr Reynolds. I mean why would you want QT to do an action comic book movie? It would be the first 3 hour comic book movie and the most boring. QT is great but he couldnt pull it off, which I know will break a lot of geek hearts.

Does Kevin Smith like Deadpool? His films have very witty banter and I'd love to see what he could do with Deadpool. In other news, is Ryan Reynolds ready to film an entire movie without people seeing his face??? Because, I WILL NOT see a Deadpool movie where he goes around maskless for the entire film.

if that happen i would love that tarantino & deadpool = amazing stuff. i know it won't but a geek can always dream.

This guy should just focus on not screwing up Green Lantern.
  • Ash
I'd rather he didn't screw up deadpool, and then not screw up green lantern, considering he was signed to deadpool first.
  • how about not acting the same in both movies. for some reason, that will be the big challenge. if i watch one movie, i want to not think about deadpool, or GL, or Hannibal King as the same guy....
  • DBanks
Hell yeah they should write it. They know how to keep you interested and make good action scenes, so that could get me to watch it

Deadpool still regularly breaks the 4th wall. In the last month or so i can think of several times (asking spiderman if he had been reading his (deadpool's) inner monolog and the fact that DP had his toe nails painted as the different lanterns in honor of Blackest Night to point out 2.
I have hope that it will be a good flick, but fear it will not be handled correctly............Especially by fox. But i think they have the right actor, just need the writer and director to fall into place (zombieland writers are a step in the write direction)

Everybody wishes Tarantino would direct anything.

If Fox manages NOT to micro-manage their movies and let the directors do their friggin' job, then yeah, I would be all for it.

But I remain skeptical of Fox's practices. I'm sure that's why Ryan Reynolds said yes to Green Lantern: He knew that was a project that was ready for production while Deadpool would be in Development Hell for a while.

See the Deapool comic cover? Blue and Orange alert!
  • I know, I know already! We get it!
  • If you knew anything about comics, you would realize that the blue is a shading technique for black. But you wouldn't because you are already color blind since you think his RED and BLACK outfit is orange and blue. Good job in doing research! Thank you true believers, and maybe just one day we can all just get along!

I laughed so hard when i read this... You really are an imbecile. You got so arrogant and cocky.. Look where it landed you. For someone who goes out of his way to prove his "knowledge", one would think he'd be smarter...

What is the big deal with blue and orange?

God, I love Deadpool from what I read as a kid. I don't have much hope for the movie, tho. :(

Man that actually sounds like it could be really good but I doubt we will get anything close to that
  • Slatters
Haha ugh, all these comic book movies. Can't wait for the gritty and "dark" adaptation of Archie.
  • actually....haha.
