Early Buzz: Avatar: The Video Game

Avatar video game

The first press screenings of James Cameron’s Avatar take place on Thursday, December 10th, so we won’t hear any reactions until then. But reviews for the Avatar Video Game have begun to be published, and it’s not good. The game currently has a 64% positive rating on metacritic, which equates to “mixed or average reviews”. It should be noted that while the video game takes place in the world of Pandora, and features creatures and technology seen in the movie, the storyline is different — something created just for the game. Below you can find a few review excerpts:

1UP: “Avatar’s not a bad-looking or playing game — it’s just very average. You may have the whole planet to explore, but your primary objectives boil down to “go to a point, push a button and or kill some guys, then go back to the start.” The framework’s in place — a wide array of weapons, big enemies to take down — but Avatar just doesn’t put them in an interesting setting.”

Official Xbox Magazine: “Nitpicks are plenty, but so are the surprisingly fun aspects — whichever side of planetary strip-mining you fall on.”

More after the jump.

GameSpy: “The basic gameplay of Avatar is so fundamentally flawed that even those few bright spots would only set you up for disappointment. Because, despite the guiding hand of Cameron, Avatar is ultimately just another big-name movie game that doesn’t fulfill its early promise.”

Game Informer: “In the end however, these extra layers can’t fix the subpar combat and disappointing storyline at the game’s core, leaving Avatar a lackluster, though not entirely unpleasant, experience. While forgiving sci-fi fans might still appreciate this intergalactic romp, the average gamer is left with an easy choice: this game is a rental at best.”

IGN: “The gameplay feels like it needs more work. Loose controls, bad melee combat, weak mission design, and a wonky camera dull the experience.”

TeamXbox: “Ubisoft Montreal has crafted one of the better licensed efforts we’ve seen in a while, but a weak story, poor pacing and a few minor gameplay flaws keep Avatar from competing with the likes of far superior, recent third-person efforts such as Assassin’s Creed II and Batman: Arkham Asylum.”

GameSpot: “It’s not a bad game, and portions of it are competent, if not quite remarkable. But Avatar wears thin quickly, and the story is too fragile to compensate for the deficiencies.”

LOL if anyone wants to try something shitty (actually a lot shitty) there's that Rogue Warrior game with Mickey Rourke voice (with some of the most horrible voice over ever... every 2 words, one includes an f-bomb)

Oh.. and you can finish the whole game in less than 90 minutes!!!!

Working on a movie video game must be soul crushing. You know right from the get go that it's going to be shit, yet you have to but your ass for the next few years and will inevitably be embarassed to say you ever worked on it. You can tell from the developer diaries that they went in with the best possible intentions, but 99.999% of the time, it goes wrong. Regardless of how good the developer is, movie games are like friggin' Kryptonite.
  • I am shocked, shocked, at the idea that a movie to video game adaptation isn't very good.

It's almost as if they're just trying to cash in or something...
  • thanks men show the contents brother enjoyed very good

No one has said it on this thread, so I'll be the first. While I'm super-excited to see Avatar, I wish Cameron would have helmed a Halo film. He just seems so perfect of a choice for an adaption. You know Halo will eventually get made, and my fear is that it will end up being directed by a hack. OK, just my $0.02.
  • James Cameron directing a Halo film would be a ridiculous notion, considering Halo ripped off Aliens in a huge way.

You internet geeks and your conclusions...

Payed HOMAGE to. HOMAGE. The creators said it was as much a homage to it as Indiana Jones was to TV Adventure Serials from mid last century.

The game looks on par with the movie, i.e. utter shite.

    You've played the game?

    Seen the movie?
  • the game looks kinda pretty, but gameplay wise pretty dull. i was watching the quick look on giantbomb. who knows though, i'm sure it'll appeal more to people who go to see avatar and become die hard fans.

The only other movie based game I can think of that worked slightly better than everything else in the genre was King Kong. It was fun and had a different approach to the typical linear build of most movie based video games. I generally don't find anything to look forward to in this genre.

there's actually quite a few games that gamers and reviewers regard as actual great (and not just "good" or "ok" movie games). chronicles of riddick, spider-man 2, and ghostbusters all come to mind.

For a movie-to-game adaptation, it's better than expected. It's an okay game.
But nothing on the level of GTA.

    The 3d looks amazing, though.

As a rule, movie related games suck. As do game related movies.

Two entertainment industries that just can't seem to work together. Game Informer actually had a really interesting story on it in their November issue.

Something I never considered is how differently the way the mediums are produced. A game is made by a team that work together on all their projects; a movie (at least in Hollywood) is almost universally done with a set of people who only get together for one project. It's tough for each industry to figure out the other's methods.

I was pretty down on Prince of Persia after the early release of those J.G. topless photos. Seriously, I though, "OMG, this looks so gay!". But after watching some of the featurettes, I'm getting a more positive feeling about it. We'll see. If Prince of Persia rakes it in at the box office then perhaps we're one step closer to a Halo movie *fingers crossed*

I will calmly await that day if it takes me my whole life. So sad...

You're right tho, PoP is giving me some hope, it looks more polished and serious than anything before it, but I just really don't want to get too excited and be disappointed. I've got Avatar filling up that space right now, which I know from your comments you're also massively hyped about like I am.

At least on the Hollywood-side of game adaptations, I don't see it being an issue of strangers working together. The failure always comes down to the same exact thing: screenwriting. The scripts are always so God-damned awful. Second to that is the casting. When you're making what will likely be a shit film you'll never attract decent talent. My thoughts anyway.
  • mbellerbrock
Yeah, I don't disagree. We really need a Spiderman like breakthrough to prove to actors, screenwriters, and directors that a videogame adaptation can be successful. It'd be awesome if Prince of Persia was that breakthrough but I'm not investing too much in that one.

Not terribly surprising, movie-to-game adaptations usually fail pretty miserably. This doesn't effect how retarded excited I still am for the movie.

but there are the few bright spots in movie games: chronicles of riddick, spider-man 2, and ghostbusters. to me, the ghostbusters game was THE example of how to do a movie game.

I wonder if there's an Xbox Achievement for "Photo Realism" to unlock cause the trailers and TV spots ain't doin' it.

Yeah, the game looks pretty lame.

Hopefully they release a demo and it changes my mind.
  • Brian
The demo was released almost 2 weeks ago. I've played it, and picking up the game in a week or so.
  • starscream9289
    Really?

Well I guess it's time to put MW2 down and see if I download it.
  • Federico
It's a rental. Not really anything more.
  • freemachine
Wow, the demo is 1.6GB! I'm downloading it as I type. I foresee a video game binge in the near future.
  • DJJoeJoe
While the story is claiming to be different, it really feels like it's the same as the story gleened from all the trailers/media currently available for the film itself. You are a soldier and are forced to choose between the 2 sides in a similar way that the trailers seem to vomit out at you.
