Columbia Pictures has given the film a rumored $47 million budget. Based on Ben Mezrich’s book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal, The Social Network tells the story of Eduardo Saverin and Mark Zuckerberg, the founders of Facebook. The screenplay was written by Aaron Sorkin, and the 162-page first draft has been described as “Unpredictable, Funny, Touching and Sad.”

The Accidental Billionaires
Here is the official description from the 272 page book :

Eduardo Saverin and Mark Zuckerberg were Harvard undergraduates and best friends–outsiders at a school filled with polished prep-school grads and long-time legacies. They shared both academic brilliance in math and a geeky awkwardness with women. Eduardo figured their ticket to social acceptance–and sexual success–was getting invited to join one of the university’s Final Clubs, a constellation of elite societies that had groomed generations of the most powerful men in the world and ranked on top of the inflexible hierarchy at Harvard. Mark, with less of an interest in what the campus alpha males thought of him, happened to be a computer genius of the first order. Which he used to find a more direct route to social stardom: one lonely night, Mark hacked into the university’s computer system, creating a ratable database of all the female students on campus–and subsequently crashing the university’s servers and nearly getting himself kicked out of school. In that moment, in his Harvard dorm room, the framework for Facebook was born.

What followed–a real-life adventure filled with slick venture capitalists, stunning women, and six-foot-five-inch identical-twin Olympic rowers–makes for one of the most entertaining and compelling books of the year. Before long, Eduardo’s and Mark’s different ideas about Facebook created in their relationship faint cracks, which soon spiraled into out-and-out warfare. The collegiate exuberance that marked their collaboration fell prey to the adult world of lawyers and money. The great irony is that while Facebook succeeded by bringing people together, its very success tore two best friends apart. The Accidental Billionaires is a compulsively readable story of innocence lost–and of the unusual creation of a company that has revolutionized the way hundreds of millions of people relate to one another.

The book is available on Amazon for $16.50 ($25 cover price).

Timberlake sure has come far since his N Sync days. Could we be looking at a Wahlberg-like career?
  • The Autobot logo shirt steals the pic. Timberlake just *happens* to be in it.
  • David Fincher Directs the facebook movie. Jesus can officially come back now

I think it's going to be a massive box office success.
  • well, he just kind of looks like Justin Timberlake.....haha

I like him as an actor, mostly his SNL bits. those are really funny. but I wouldn't mind seeing him do more things in the movie field

He was pretty good in alpha dog, give 'em a chance

Having read the script review, I think Timberlake's casting could actually be pretty brilliant. He's already proven he has the chops to handle the comedic stuff (of which there is apparently a lot) on SNL, and I think he could actually pull off the more personal, tragic aspects of his character's situation. To be honest, I'm more worried about Fincher than anything else; he has a tendency to draw a lot of attention to his direction (as was the case in Fight club and Benjamin Button), which I think would be the wrong approach for this type of film. Still, I'm definitely willing to give him a chance.

A lot of people seem to be fearing this film, but I have to say it's piqued my interest.

I'm guessing Timberlake's acting fee is still below Cera or Shia's, but he still does have some marketing cachet to make it work given the budget Fincher has. It will be interesting to see how it works out, but Fincher is notoriously NOT an actor's director and I think it's safe to say that throwing Timberlake out there without a safety net is a risk.

my god this is one of the best castings of the year. i've read the book, and JT will be great as sean parker. that outfit is perfect! directly from the book!

I'm personally not a big Timberlake fan, but the kid is mega talented! I remember seeing an interview with one of the executives of the old mickey mouse club who said Timberlake was the only kid who had ever received perfect scores in all 3 catergories...in which acting was one of them. When Disney and David Fincher both give you the nod, your doing something right.
  • You know, it's obviously unoriginal, but it looks watch-able with a few laughs. Not seek-out watch-able, but if it's on tv or family want to watch it, it's not something I'd avoid.
  • Tuco
Ryan Phillipe could had been a good choice too.
  • tim
    oh yeah, good catch...i agree.
  • Wickedrebel
A BETTER choice probably. I've been very underwhelmed with all of Timberlakes performances in the past. Truly, a terrible actor.
