I'm glad that you guys gave an update on MYSTERY TEAM. If I wasn't studying in Tokyo right now I would've demanded that film WITHOUT HESITATION. Ever since I saw the redband trailer, I've been pretty excited about it and I hope the guys at DERRICK COMEDY can gain some recognition somewhat similar to the DRUNKEN LIZARD guys or something (speaking of which; I can't wait for the SLAMMIN`SALMON and SUPER TROOPERS 2). I could really use a good comedy right now. I mean I know humor gets lost in translation but have you seen the variety shows from Japan? Normally, I don't watch them at all but ocassionally I find myself sitting through them at parties and I literally feel like Alex DeLarge during the deprogramming scenes. I think if I watched these shows for a long period of time, I would go insane. I think that's the reason why I admire Richard Kelly's Southland Tales so much. When I take one step back and look at urban life in Tokyo objectively, it's pretty much like Southland Tales.

Anyhoo, enough with my rambling. Adding to what you guys said about MYSTERY TEAM having a heart, I guess the good chemistry between the actors comes from the fact that these guys have been through it all together since their first webisode and it's great that it adds to the realism of the film. I hope the film becomes available in some form of wide-release when I get back to the US.

    As always, great show guys.

    good ep again guys
  • For the record: it's stop-motion NOT claymation. Just saying because stop-motion enthusiasts and animators HATE IT when you make this mistake (See Henry Selick interviews and Arthur Rankin interviews).

Also, the look of the puppets is on purpose and in the style of the Rankin/Bass stop-motion films like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Year Without a Santa Claus. Anderson has even said this in press interviews for Fantastic Mr. Fox. I think he is aiming to shoot for the nostalgic charm of those special, which I think succeeds for those familiar with those programs.

Keep up the good work guys!
  • I realize it was intentional, but like I said when originally discussing the trailer, that stylistic choice feels awkward because it's an active regression of animation capabilities, and draws attention to the fact that these are models being moved frame-by-frame by animators. Initially, it really detracted from my ability to perceive the characters as real, which was the main fear I had after watching the trailer. It's a good thing the voice acting was so good, because otherwise, I don't know how I would've been able to get into the characters enough to enjoy the film.
  • I mean, there's no arguing opinion obviously. If something didn't work for you, it didn't work. However, I am curious to see if you feel the same way about attempts by filmmakers to mimic and recall other forms of, for lack of a better word, "vintage" techniques.

Like, did Scorsese's decision to have the first half of "The Aviator" be in only hues of green and brown like the early films of the 1920s detract from your ability to see the characters as real?

Just curious and thanks for the response!
