Because you demanded it! Or because one movie isn’t enough for all of Breaking Dawn’s rib-breaking, belly-chewing, vampire-baby lovin’ goodness. Or because The Twilight Saga: New Moon made a metric fuckton of money. Whatever the reason, Summit Entertainment isn’t just promising to make a film based on the final book in Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series. They’re talking about making two.

New Moon has earned almost $500m in two weeks, far surpassing the performance of the first Twilight, and Variety reports that Summit is consequently trying to figure out how to make the most of a phenomenon that isn’t close to being as burnt out as some speculated it might be. Now the company is looking at taking the Harry Potter route and drawing out the series as long as possible. And, to be fair (more fair than many will be to Twilight) one of the criticisms levied at the novel was that it might have been better served as two books. So: two movies?

(The main criticism levied at the book, however, is that it is bugfuck crazy, and having scanned it I have to agree. I can totally see why Devin at CHUD wants to see this one made faithfully. It is NUTS.)

While a second Breaking Dawn film will probably make a lot of money, it will definitely cost a lot of money. What’s a little big studio like Summit to do? Quick, someone call Ryan Kavanaugh! We need his magical Blockbuster Predict-O Algorithm in here, like, yesterday! Splitting the final film into two means renegotiating with both author Stephanie Meyer and the cast, who’ve signed for only four films. It also changes the deal for screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, and for whoever Summit taps as director for the adaptation.

Right now the company is looking again at Chris Weitz to direct, according to Variety. Summit was talking about backing The Gardener, the smaller film Weitz wanted to do next, but the trade says the company is now putting off committing to that movie in hopes it can get Weitz to come back to Twilight. You’ve also got to wonder: is Summit now thinking that hiring David Slade for Eclipse, in a fairly transparent attempt to make the series more appealing to boys, was a bad move?

Milk that cash cow for everything its worth! Rob Pattinson is only signed on for the first 3 movies though, so his agent right now is telling him that he can ask for the moon if he wants. But then again, how funny would it be if he told them no he didn't want to do a 4th film.
  • greggorybasore
Dude that would be so awesome I'd spend a year laughing about it.
  • Slatters
They would recast him? There's plenty of pale, mediocre actors out there.

Gives the studio a chance to groom a new shitty superstar who can go on to star in the next retarded franchise.
  • shadow
Robert Pattinson's has always said he despised the fangirls. I think if he opted out of the film that would be awesome!
  • fjrjg
I think each of the three parts of the book can be about 45mins so the film would be just over 2 hours long. I want one film it will be hard to wait for the second part.

I have conflicted feelings of joy and terror. Either way I'm going to laugh my ass off.
  • Adrian
No, just no. Harry Potter deserves the 2 movie treatment. For starters, you just can't cram that seventh book into 1 movie. It also appeals to families all over the world, not just teenage girls. This... just no.
  • RussFischer
Nearly $500m worldwide says that New Moon appealed to more than just teenage girls.
  • horny soccer moms, closeted gays, and bored office workers (*cough me cough*) have seen New Moon!
  • greggorybasore
Wait families you say?... you mean like women in 30's and 40's taking their daughters to the midnight screenings and maybe dragging their husbands and sons along?
  • Doc
If it included all of the spine-snapping, vampire-fang-c-section, werewolf-falling-in-love-with-a-baby stuff, I would actually watch a Twilight film. But more than likely, it'll all be rewritten, and I won't watch it, like I haven't the others.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm freaking excited!
  • "But Bella wears him down and Edward throws it in her - and knocks her the fuck out, leaving her badly bruised.

Let's go over that again: Edward fucks Bella into unconsciousness. This alone should have you running to Fandango to pre-order your tickets, but it only gets better.

Despite being knocked out cold by his sexual style (and having the headboard destroyed), Bella goes back to Edward for seconds. This time he knocks her up. Yes, an undead vampire apparently has enough viable sperm to impregnate a human woman while fucking her off the coast of Rio de Janero."
  • that's from the CHUD article that Russ Fischer posted. Boyyy, reading that alone got me hot and excited.
  • deea
wondering why were you alone :-"
  • lol, no I mean "the article alone" makes me hot and excited... but I digress !!
  • I greatly appreciate any news outlet that uses the term "bugfuck".
  • greggorybasore
OH boy, this is gonna piss off so many people it'll be great!
  • Slatters
The book isn't as "bugfucking hilariously zany" as everyone seems to be trying to make it out to be. Its just as stupid and terrible as the other books, it just has a few moments that will obviously be "retooled" for the movie.

Stephanie Meyer was the one who suggested in an interview splitting the movie into 2 parts because she felt the book was so long (when apparently its plot can easily be shortened into one movie). On the other hand DH's split into 2 movies was the decision of studio heads with JK Rowling keeping out of the picture. See one of the many other reasons Rowling is classes apart from Meyer.
  • deea
o, ye, sure, classes apart, she wrote 7 books, or what the shit are they, because most surelly she was so hungry for the money, and she really didn't care in how many parts her book will be split. for me, is as simple as that
  • Adrian
Rowling cares greatly about her work. She has put unbelievable time into her books. Meyer wrote her four books from 2005-2008, 1 book a year. Rowling's books came out from 1997-2007, 11 years total for 7 books, which were greatly expanded, more so than Twilight. Rowling's universe is without a question more innovative and more detailed than that of Twilight.

Anyways, you want to know why JK cared more for her books than she did for the money? Its because she stopped writing them. She could of continued on writing Harry Potter stories because people would buy them, but she didn't. She stopped when the story was over. Many other writers would not do that. Hell, Meyers wanted to start her series over, but from Edwards point of view! That is basically retelling the same story! That is taking advantage of a cash cow in a bad way.
  • damn. Meyers brings a bad name to hard working writers who create lucrative book franchises.
  • deea
sorry, she won't publish midnight sun. i would want to, because the draft was better than any other book i've ever read (and i read some). anyway, harry potter is for children, let's be onest, twilight is a young adult "saga", well, books.
  • Zapadeedoodahh
Also do you know how many organizations and charities her money goes to? All of the proceeds from the extra HP books go to charity and Stephenie Meyer hasn't done anything like that. Rowling does it all for the children. And if you don't think adults read HP go to any fan website and the majority of them are adults
  • Debbie
i hope that rob will do the 4 movie he hot
  • deea
    he is hot, maybe
  • elizabeth
you should probably do your research and try reading some articles once in a while. its not just fan girls who like the twilight series. everyone loves it. and not just the parents of children. people of allll ages have read the book. and harry potter is just as creative as twilight. stephenie meyer may not have taken as long to write the books and may not of written as many books but that doesnt change anything. they are both very good writers.
  • SoccerGirl
omg they should make it into 2 movies the book is way 2 long and if they take out scenes it wont make as much sense and robert better not quit
