Predators Director Defends Adrien Brody Casting

brody_predator

There was a lot of speculation about who would be cast as the lead in Predators, the Robert Rodriguez-produced, Nimród Antal-directed follow up to the classic John McTiernan / Arnold Schwarzenegger action flick Predator. (Do I really have to spell all that out? Probably not.) When Adrien Brody was announced, more than a few people (including me) went, ‘huh?’ Now, for the first time since the project began, Antal is talking about the film and his casting choices.

Speaking to ComingSoon, Antal says of Brody:

“I think when we cast Adrien, there were a lot of people going; ‘What?’ But at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that…He plays a mercenary in the film and if you look at the guys in Iraq and Afghanistan today, they’re not ‘yolked-out’ Schwarzenegger-looking guys. They’re all very wiry and thin guys, and I think it’s going to play well.”

There’s definitely something to be said for that. While the movie version of the action hero is more or less defined by the Schwarzenegger / Stallone physique of the ’80s, actual special forces guys are often lean and wiry, as Antal says. It should really come down to intensity; if Brody can push that aspect of his character, the performance should work just fine.

Antal also hedges around the question of an Arnie cameo in the new film, saying “time will tell,” when asked about it. It’s gotta be better than the crappy one in Terminator: Salvation if it happens.

Meanwhile, io9 has a photo of one of the Texas locations that will be part of the Predator planet in the new film, augmenting footage the crew shot earlier this year in Hawaii. It’s a great vista; wonder if it’ll be CGI-enhanced or blended into a jungle ’scape, or stand as is. Read a description of the setup at KGNB.

Hasn't the corpse of the Predator horse been beaten enough?

Blasphemer! I can never get enough of the Predator series!

    whats with the queer picture??
  • I know right, fag predator in his fishnet top.

Speaking of predators, Loretta had her daughters' boyfriends family over her house for Thanksgivings.

They ate me out of house and home!

    Umm... ok?

Am I missing something here? Or is this just a completely random and unnecessary comment?
  • Adrian Brody for Predator? No. "But at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that" - I don't agree with this statement.

Im actually okay with the casting. It's something different.
  • What is wrong with Adrien Brody? He's an awesome actor. I'm pumped.

If I was hiring a mercenary, I certainly wouldn't be hiring a weed. I would expect someone who could actually survive hand-to-hand combat. Vale Tudo / cagefighters are not toothpicks so the decision to cats Brody, no matter how good an actor he is, lacks credibility.
  • dr_hamburger
Brodys physique in that picture (however gay it is)is about what an average ufc/cagefighters physique looks like. most of those guys are nowhere near the arnold/sly look. brody is not a toothpick. would you rather have a musclebound bafoon who cant act or a guy who isnt as big but can sure as hell act? Brody came off as pretty tough in Hollywoodland i thought too. and anyone who is being mentored in the ways of the wu by the rza has gotta be pretty frickin b.a.

I know three black belts, one of whom was in the Russian Special Forces. None of them are beefcakes, all of them are wiry and lean. All of them could kick my ass. Look at Bruce Lee or Tony Jaa. Not huge guys, but that doesn't make them any less deadly. Maybe more so...

I can tell you guys, as far as Brody is concerned, you have nothing to worry about, I happened to walk past someone watching the dailies for this a few weeks back, and he actually shocked me with the way he looked. He was pretty buffed up and actually looked believable to me, I almost didn't recognize him. I can not vouch for how good the movie will be, but the stock went up for me with what I saw.
  • indyb
Adrien is one of my favourite actors. I think he will be great in this role.
  • SwedishLore15
As someone else said, many skilled fighters aren't muscleheads. Honestly, would you rather have some beefed-up actor who can't capture the intensity of the character beyond his physique? Adrien is extraordinarily talented, and I'm sure that he's doing some training for this role. He's certainly no toothpick, and he has that "tough guy" look with the face/accent.
  • Martin
Adrien Brody rocks socks! He's awesome! A great actor and obviously he knwos how to train.
  • I have only seen him in King Kong, and someday will see him in Brothers Bloom, but still like him as their choice
  • freemachine
The director's last name is Nimrod. Need we say more?
  • damndirtyape
The original spirit of the film was all about over the top action and testosterone whereas Brody is a joke - the ultimate emo beta-male. He sucked in Kong and you'd think agents would have realized he's wrong for leading action roles.

They obviously fucked up casting him and now they are trying to rationalize the decision. This movie is off to a shitty start.
  • SockLogic
I thought he was good in The Pianist... Unless that was an "emo beta-male" roll aswell, I duno
  • SockLogic
Why must everyone conjure this image of Brody somehow imitating Schwarzenegger or Stallone? So what if hea skinny? Maybe they don't want to make the character a testosterone fueled kill machine, because we have seen that a thousand times.

This news makes me think that they are taking a more serious direction with the film. With a more believable leading man, an actor that can show vulnerability. Someone who is genuinely terrified of the crazy beast that is devouring his comrades.

Or... maybe they will try to make him a ripped, sexy bad ass kill machine, fail horribly and make a shit film. I hope that's not the case.

This is probably the first bit of information that has gotten me interested in this film.

Remember the marines in Aliens? A few were pretty muscly, but none of them were walking tanks. Michael Biehn had that military intensity without being a beefcake.

Plus, y'know, Brody can actually act.
  • jjjones
this should bethe casting of the monster http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CWzlnwEjuc&feat...
  • Sorry, I'm not buying it.
  • deuce
Remember when they cast Heath Ledger as the Joker and it confused the hell out of everyone?

    Ya...
  • Adrian Predator
people were not sure about heath ledger as the joker, so who knows what mr. brody can do
  • greggorybasore
I loves me some Adrien Brody, that dude is the hotness.
  • blarg86
sorry Brody is not the right fit for this role, hes an incredible actor but cmon Billy(from Predator) could take on this entire cast of "killers" by himself and yet these guys r sposed to take on 3 super predators when a bunch of commandos couldnt kill one? I woulda been happy if they chose someone like Matt Damon or Mark Wahlberg, at least those guys can bring some action guy intensity and can also act. But anyway this whole cast(the characters and actors alike) is just horrible, im deeply worried about this movie, and im sure all the cgi they plan to use wont save it either.
