Another Amityville Horror Remake?

The Amityville Horror

BloodyDisgusting is reporting that the Weinstein Co and Dimension Films are planning to remake The Amityville Horror… yes… again. The Platinum Dunes’ remake of the 1979 cult favorite grossed over $108 million worldwide in 2005, and is still somewhat fresh in audiences minds. Why launch into another remake, so soon?

It seems to me that the Weinstein’s are desperate to push some franchise sequels/remakes back to the big screen.   I never really liked the Amityville series, or the 2005 remake for that matter. But I’m not usually into supernatural/paranormal haunted house films. Having heard many stories about the Weinstein’s, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the idea to remake Amityville was spurred by the success of Paranormal Activity. I’ve always found the story behind Amityville to be more interesting than any of the films that were released.

The book in which the 1979 film was adapted from was said to be based on the real life paranormal experiences of the Lutz family. The cover of the novel featured the tagline, “More hideously frightening than The Exorcist because it actually happened!” and the film was also marketed as being based on a true story. Of cource, over the past 30 years, there has been a lot of controversy and even lawsuits questioning the truthfulness of the account.

In June 1979, George and Kathy Lutz supposedly passed a lie detector test concerning their experiences at the house. The various owners of the house have reported no problems while living there since the Lutz family left in 1976, and the local residents in Amityville, New York are unhappy with the attention that The Amityville Horror continues to bring to the town. I would almost want to see a movie where some of that is incorporated in some way.

  • "I would almost want to see a movie where some of that is incorporated in some way."

Hm. That'd be interesting. Hell, I'd be for an actual documentary on the subject of the near exploitative nature of the film and unwanted publicity on the town. That would be a lot better than yet another damn actual Amityville movie. It's bad enough 9 of these films exist. And I don't think any of them are any good.
  • totally agree with you, the 2005 remake was very enjoyable and this movie does not need to be remade, again. But I like your documentary idea, but would like it more if it focused on not just amityville but other towns that have received publicity from movies.
  • If I were Mayor of Amityville, I'd be pretty damn happy to have the tourism dollars the film surely rakes in. I mean, I'm sure they were doing really well before the film, what being the home of salt hay and that guy from Taking Back Sunday and all, but still.

No but really, I hope this movie doesn't ever get made ever.
  • The House in Amityville was the best thing ever to happen to that town... especially now that its favorite past-time seems to be finding straggling illegal immigrants and beating the piss out of them. There are few reasons to go to Long Island these days, and that house is one of them.

I have a feeling this is going to play out more like "found footage" style film ala 'paranormal activity". considering the finacial issues Weinstein is dealing with, I can see them doing it on the "no-budget" side of things. Maybe somebody moves into the "legendary" house to shoot a documentary and real shit starts happening. or was that like the last one?

Didn't Halloween: Resurrection also try to renew a tired horror franchise by trying some found footage crap?

This sounds like a horrible idea to me. WTF is wrong with the Weinstein company these days? They shovel out these crap horror films and then remake/reboot them a few years later because their crap hasn't turned into a moneymaking franchise. The sooner they go bankrupt the better.
  • If it so pleases the court, I'd like to re-submit the "No Movie Shall Be Remade More Than Once Every 10 Years" Bill, which I first introduced not too long ago...
  • haha, excellent, I would love to see that bill go thru...
  • Hi,

For ages that I've seen this film for rent and I know that it's a classic, but I'll have to say that never saw it.
It the remake is as the one from Chainsaw, then will be a loser.
    But time will tell.
Nowadays people relly too much on FX, forgeting to tell a good story.

Great news! The 2005 remake was awful. I'm a fan of the original book and, regardless of whether its true or not, its a great read. Hopefully the new remake is closer to the actual book this time (that rooftop end chase in the film was stupid) and they get a director on board that can create a genuinely frightening ghost story without relying on CGI to do so.
  • It's a shame how the name 'Amityville' became franchised because the original myth, book and even the original film were pretty decent. I wasn't surprised by the 2005 remake (amongst the remake trend) but it predictably fell flat. I think you're right, Peter, the success of Paranormal Activity might have definitely spurred talk of remaking Amityville already.

Isn't it just awful how films that are less than 5 years old are getting remade? Next year I think we can expect remakes of District 9 and Transformers 2. Just proves that horror movies are the bitch of the film industry and no matter how much they suck, we still go to them. (I actually enjoyed the remake - except for the boo scares with the little girl..they were handled poorly.)

This must be a new Record. Fastest succession of remakes in Motion Picture History.
  • I think The Incredbile Hulk holds that record.
  • filmkid
but The Incredbile Hulk was not a remake it was a reboot
  • The original film is my all-time favorite horror movie, and I was somewhat excited about the remake because it allowed for a chance to see some of the stuff from the book make it onto the screen. But instead, they completely missed the mark and made up a bunch of stuff and it ended up being insulting to the original movie.

If they remake it a third time and leave out the best elements of the book yet again, I'll... well, I don't know what I'll do. I'll be pretty upset.
  • I thought the ending of the 2005 film was great. There is more talent out there but Hollywood seems bent on dismissing people like us and just relaunch everything in sight.
One would think a sequel would do better, if a mighty if a director got attached he/she shouldn't listen to the big bosses and just make it into a sequel.

I was not overwelmbed by the Amitivill Horror, because it spawnd crapy sequels, so dead lose to me. :(

I liked the Margot Kidder version, the Ryan Reynolds one wasn't bad either, but a reboot is just stupid. Just do a sequel to the 2005 movie where a new family moves in and the same horrible shit happens.
