Avatar

20th Century Fox is really trying to sell James Cameron’s Avatar as a technological leap in the filmmaking process, by releasing marketing materials which test the boundaries of what have been done before.ou may have seen video footage of the action figure line, which offers an augmented reality component. The latest release is an Interactive trailer for the film, which you can access on the official Avatar website. The trailer is less of a trailer, and more of a program. You actually have to download and install it using Adobe Air. So what is it? Basically it allows you to watch featurettes which let you learn more about the characters and creatures. The featurettes are accessed by clicking hotspots during the trailer.

I recommend you check it out for yourself. While I think that it is a cool step forward, I found the experience rather annoying. There doesn’t really seem to be anything really interactive about it. There is no room to explore, or discover anything beyond the few featurettes that pop up while watching the trailer. In fact, I think I would have had a better user experience if they had given me a website which allowed me to access any of the featurettes on demand, without having to download a program, or sit through a trailer waiting for the hotspots to arrive, in order to watch them.

Trailer Addict has the featurettes online. So those of you who are unable to download the interactive trailer program will be able to watch the new featurettes embedded them after the jump.

I have to say, I was a doubter at first. But I'm now getting very excited for this movie.
  • asdf
damn, some incredible footage in some of these
  • kingback
wow, these movie seems to have some incredible action in it,but also a lot of heart...i'm lookin foward to this!
  • kfizz
I think its funny some things have a halo name to them. But halo did rip off Alines so alls fair.
  • That's it then, I'm finally convinced.
  • Rockie
my feelings are the same on this one.........weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
  • I tried to just watch the design clips. I stayed away from the history of the characters besides Jake. I don't want to know too much. But yeah, i'm freaking excited.
  • because everyone seems to be 'a believer' now,, here are some problems i still have with the movie. first, a lot of it is visually and technically amazing. but whenever i see the 'navi' , i just hate it. i cannot take it as seriously as it presents itself. i understand the movie will make you empathize with them, because it will be an overdramatic and stupid plot, but i will refuse to side the navi, as they look SO godamn stupid.
the big alien creatures are too shiny and colorful. the cgi becomes especially obvious and it's distracting. the shots of characters that are clearly more live action than cgi are refreshing, so ultimatly it makes me dislike most of the time spent in the alien world. that 3 minute alien jungle chase scene we saw a few days ago just fell so flat, in my opinion. watching it feels like a cutscene in a crappy videogame. i dont care about seeing blue cat men chased in a jungle to kill time, or flying on alienbirds. its just really really lame, unless you are a child. seriously. sick of hearing justifications 'just enjoy it, its a fun action movie waaa waa'. no. some of this shit is pretty stupid.
ill reserve judgment, obviously. but these are my thoughts so far on what i've seen.

Ok, condense your comment to: "I think those aliens look lame." That is why you don't like the film. Completely subjective, you're totally free to have that opinion, and no one has a problem with that. The fact that you don't like them really has nothing to do with the worth of the movie though. It's like saying "I don't really like Heath Ledger, so I don't like the Dark Knight." Opinions are opinions.

I kind of sympathize. Something about their eyes bothers me and makes me take them less seriously, so perhaps there is something to be said there. I can't put into words what it is though. I would guess perhaps it's that they look so much like humans that the minor differences just frustrate the facial-recognition centers of my brain into thinking they're people and then realizing that they're not. I don't know, though, I'm making that up based off a whim. Something about the faces bothers me, as well as how shiny the skin is.

But that won't get in the way of me enjoying the film.
  • Thank you for condensing my comment, though i have a problem with your response. You say, "The fact that you don't like them really has nothing to do with the worth of the movie". I disagree. I doubt I am alone with the opinion that these alien characters are laughable, especially given how seriously the movie presents itself. The narrative and storyline only works if you accept and believe and embrace the characters - which I am finding it hard to do. If the design of major characters in the film is actively distracting to the point where you are constantly thinking about it, it is directly related to the worth of the movie.

    You are not alone.

I really want those blue things to get annihilated by the humans. Like, completely obliterated.

But we know that won't happen.

Agreed. The Na'vi look silly as hell and to a lesser extent so does the overall design of the world. I was expecting something a little darker in design, heavier and grittier. Really disappointing.

Having said that, the redeeming quality is the in theater 3D viewing experience. Watching the clips online they may not look that impressive. But if you were to physically able to visit that world in real life it would be incredibly amazing. That's the concept with Avatar, from what I saw on Avatar Day. The visual presentation is incredibly immersive and realistic that it negates some of the silliness of the design and adds a unique element of intensity.

It doesn't completely fix the issue but it minimalizes it quite a bit.

If they looked how you would like them to look, there would still be people out there who thought your design sucked. It's just the way it is. It's a shame you can't ever get into the movie because of the character design. To each their own ya know?

I don't think you need to reserve your judgement september11th: this movie is not for you, obviously.

The more I watch, the less I want to see, so I'm not going to bother with the featurettes. In fact, with this amount of overexposure, I'm probably not going to bother with the movie at all.

Cameron can be the king of his own world, but not mine. At least not since T2.
  • waqman
You didn't like Terminator 2? What recent action movies did you enjoy?

I'll take a Cameron film over JJ Abrams any day. Talk about bland, that's all his films have been so far.
  • dogless
Not SINCE T2. T2 was the last thing he did that I liked.

oh my god, that screenshot at the top at hi-res is amazing. whatever folks said the CGI in this is no good...well...psh, yeah. whatever.

Robert Zemeckis just lost everything ever.
  • Nel
The Trudy Chacon one is a replica of the Jake Sully featurette. Hmm...

  • Nel
    Thanks @mbellerbrock! Appreciate the response.

I had no idea there were so many psychics in the world. None of us can comment on how this film is going to turn out. It could be negative or positive. All I know is that James cameron and sci-fi go together like peaches and cream ladies and gents and I'm excited about what he 'might' provide us with!

I, personally, am no longer checking out all these new featurettes as I feel it can ruin the initial viewing but still can't help Reading about them! I am sooo weak!

May I also say that from what I have seen, trailer wise, it looks great. This however does not mean it will be great. I mean, I thought the trailer for the hitman looked good!!

Also, can we please stop ripping into JC. The man is a god.
