Watch 2.5 Minutes of Avatar: The Thanador Chase

Avatar

20th Century Fox has released a new video clip from James Cameron’s Avatar on the Fox-owned site IGN. The clip features Sam Worthington’s character Jake Sully in Avatar form, trying to escape from a Thanador, one of the violent creatures of Pandora. You might remember that a 30 second segment of this clip was released through LG, and previously ran on the site. The new clip is two and a half minutes long, and goes beyond the end point showed at Comic-Con and Avatar Day. Watch it now embedded after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

epic (ya, im that kid who says epic)
  • Im loving the "Avatar" Flickr profile. Those hi-res images or breathtaking. Showed the close up one of jakes avatar "growling" to one of my friends and he had no idea it WASNT a guy in makeup!! getting more excited as time goes on
  • mbellerbrock
What's the Flickr profile? I'd be interested in checking that out.

So this is the first footage I've seen of this film, and i'm still completely uninterested. It looks like something off the cover of those generic sci-fi fantasy books that pack barnes and noble shelves.
  • cinefan
Don't judge a book by its cover.
  • waqman
Those sci-fi/fantasy book covers may be generic on books. But we've barely ever seen those worlds brought to film. Instead we've been stuck with generic District 9 dullness. Cameron already perfected that with Aliens. I'm glad he's trying something more...colorful and out of his comfort level. The man loves taking risks. I'm sure he's used to all you naysayers by now. Titanic almost gave him a heart attack.

I love covers of generic sci-fi fantasy books that pack barnes and noble shelves, so i´m happy. Sorry for being happy. It´s better than be sarcastic and negative.

    thanks for telling us
    we think you are special

This was most of the footage that was unveiled at Comic Con and Avatar Day. This is going to be an absolutely breath taking experience. i was on the fence with the movie until i saw the footage in 3D. I couldn't be more excited for a movie. James Cameron hasn't made a bad film yet.
  • skywarp
Nice. Getting really excited about this film. I don't think it'll be as bad as some people think.
  • Ashitaka
    That was great.
  • The Guest
Boring, predictable chase scene. Only confirms my impression that this is going to be a very conventional movie dressed up in expensive special effects.
  • starscream9289
Please tell me they aren't gonna keep the T-Rex roar.
  • The T-Rex roar is only in a few versions. I saw a trailer for it last night and the roar was completely different. Which is good.
  • Brenn41
Seriously? This clip was amazing. And it's amazing because of the ferocity of that creature. It doesn't let up. Jake is never safe. You think he finds refuge in a tree, and the Thanador starts ripping it to shreds. You think his gun will kill it, and it rips it away. Even when he leaps off the waterfall, Cameron gives us a look back at the creature, still pissed that it wasn't victorious, making you think that the creature just might jump in the water after him. Damn. You feel Jake's exhaustion at the end of that one.

Yes it is a chase scene where our protagonist gets away, and yes, we have seen a lot of those over the years. But this scene is gripping, even at low-resolution (3D will be mind-blowing). And that's what Cameron brings to the table.
  • The Guest
Oh yeah, we've never seen any of THAT before.

And no, I didn't think his gun would kill it. :-)
  • AfroVince
Well there's a reason why they'd release a two and a half minute clip now. No spoilers, show the effects, the details. I'm pretty sure that was the point.

I was thinking when the clip started - "yeah, we know he's not going to die, so that's why fox showed us this clip".

Like they're going to show anything that hasn't been given away yet. Especially after all the secrecy.
  • clarencesomerset
Well-executed, if cliched. But I still find it hard to empathize with the character and think that he is real when he is a blue giant with a tail. I can understand the scope of what Cameron's doing: making audiences connect with entirely CG-ed characters. But it still seems something is missing ... gotta wait for the movie to come out to decide!
  • mchops
I just came back from seeing a screening with my brother who auditioned for a small part in the movie and I must say it was pretty fricking awesome! I'll be going back to see it in Imax 3D once it gets released. Fans of Cameron will not be disappointed.
  • Shletten
I don't see how anyone could dislike this scene. I agree on all points with Brenn41.

And this clip gave me a CGI orgasm, I'll quote myself: "Oh my god! I thought I had seen everything! I suggest you all watch the shot where Grace says "Run! Definitely run!" again. You can see tiny wrinkles creating on her cheeks and you have to stare at her neck! You can her throat muscles, nerves, jugular vein and her trachea move! It even collides with her polo. O_O"
  • mchops
Yeah that scene is pretty awesome! There are many awesome scenes in it lol!
  • JPX
"I just came back from seeing a screening" Bullshit.
  • mchops
    JPX

I saw a screening of it with 4 of my buddies and we all thought it was awesome. We will be going to Imax 3D once it is released to see it properly. Call bullshit all you want while I enjoy this incredible movie. And no, I don't work for Fox or James Cameron.
  • shemyrushmoremax
I'm sorry but how could you have seen this when theres still thirty minutes of it left unfinished?
  • mchops
It's an unfinished copy when it comes to the effects but the full
    length movie is finished.
  • DwayneWayne
That was so cool when the creature was trying to get to him when he was hiding in the tree!...wait, wasn't that in King Kong?

Well, it was really cool when the creature got a hold of him but it was really his backpack!...wait, wasn't that in The Lost World?

Ah, who cares about originality anyhow?
  • DraganM
And than you started complaining that Avatar is not original. Well .. that is really original. Well done! :)

Anyway .. really enjoyably chase sequence!
  • JPX
Wow, this does absolutely nothing for me. I haven't wanted to admit it, but this movie just seems like a huge misfire. Not for one second did I believe that I'm watching anything more than an expensive cartoon. I have no intention of seeing this in the theater. I'm so disappointed that this is the vehicle that Cameron is using for his big comeback.
  • AfroVince
didn't you just post 2 minutes before THIS post that you saw it at a screening?
  • presto117
no, he quoted from someone else's post.
  • Justin
    Un-der-whel-ming! [clap, clap, clapclapclap]
  • mchops
It doesn't bother me that you don't believe me. I'm the one that got to see
the movie so call bullshit all you want. I'll watch it again tomorrow and
the rest of the week as well. I'll think about you while watching it. Does
it make me special or something that I have seen it? No. I just thought I
would let you guys know that it's awesome.
  • Justin
I didn't say anything about your "early screening" claim, goofball.
  • mchops
Yeah I know. I wasn't talking to you either. That response was for someone
    else GOOFBALL.
  • mchops
The reply was meant for someone else. Didn't mean to send it to you goofball.
  • DraganM
Are you familiar with situation where you are with friends and some really awesome looking chick is passing by and everyone is drooling but one of guys is above situation and says something on the lines:"She doesn't look anything special to me.I am unimpressed." Like someone cares? :)
  • xorith
hmm, now it is definitely interesting but some of the CG actually looked kind of rough. like when his hand gets caught on the backpack and he's flung to the ground.

I also agree with everyone saying they are finding it hard to get interested in seeing this film, the premise seems generic and enigmatic.
  • CRASHkennedy
oooohh im so going to watch this movie alone
  • geighdude
    yawn.
  • Wow, I'm blown away by every clip I see. I know some people want to downgrade the movie but for me this is looking simply awesome. All I want to do is enjoy it so I won't be looking for what I don't like or what doesn't look right out of context with the whole film.
  • Totally agree. For my 2 cents, I'm going to watch this clip a couple more times because it's cool.
  • svart aske
For the amount of money and effort committed to creating this alien planet, you'd think it would have more imagination than a generic terrestrial forest environment.
  • waqman
The real imagination hits at sun-down. I hear all the plants are fluorescent (More inspired by...the deep sea which is apparently Cameron's passion clearly) and glowing. Also the floating mountains look really cool. He's throwing a lot of epic set-pieces here.
  • That thing is worse at biting than Germans are at shooting
  • Barricade84
this is sick...i'm so fuckin pumped for this movie..it looks so epic and perfect in every way.
  • there's a longer version of this clip in hd on xbox-live
  • Wow...it really wanted to eat him. The thing looked really frustrated at the end.
  • I would say that it semi makes me interested in seeing this but at the same time I figured that it would have a lot of action sequences already. But the animation does look very crisp which is a good thing.
  • KW
Really enjoyed this scene. Don't care what the naysayers think. Thought that I was completely immersed in what was going on moreso then the fact that it was completely CGed. When I did watch it all over again, I must say that it is extremely impressive how seamless the animation is. The lighting, texture and even the artificial camerawork is just incredible. Cameron is definitely a director who knows his stuff and you can't deny that. I think people are looking too much into the CG and it just ruins it for them. I think people need to just go in and watch it as it is and enjoy it for what it is.
  • Kyle C.
As someone who hasn't seen the Comic-Con footage or the Avatat Day stuff, I must say, that was pretty cool. Sure we've seen stuff just like it before but it felt like a living breathing action scene filmed for real. That's pretty incredible for a CG scene. I'm beginning to think that we should all stop doubting Cameron. If it weren't for Titanic, which I hate, I wouldn't, it's just so corny and pretentious. I hope that doesn't happen with Avatar.
